Batangas. Talisay is 3rd class municipality in the province of Batangas, Philippines. This
town is located in the north-central area of Batangas. While about the climate, Talisay
experience wet or rainy season that usually occurs during the month of May until
November. Hot or dry season for the rest of the year.
Now we are here in our first destination. Welcome to the world famous Taal Volcano. A
strato-volcano complex that sits at the center of Taal Lake. Taal Volcano is the smallest
active volcano in theworld. A unique volcano which has a lake of its own inside its crater
called the Crater Lake. In fact, Taal Lake is one of the biggest lakes in in the Philippines
and there are many endemic fishes living here such as the tawilis and maliputo which
are delicacies. They said there were sharks living in the lake but said to be extinct now.
Our second destination is Taal Basilica. Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of
St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is
huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest
Catholic Church in Asia.
Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque
appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in
1856. The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is
comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical
columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight! Taal Basilica is a popular
wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.
When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10
meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at
the center. Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable
landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.
The province of Batangas provides a wide range of food delights. Since it is near bodies
of water like the sea, it has a variety of seafood. Their lakes and rivers also produce
freshwater fishes. The farms and lands surrounding Batangas produce the top quality
meat in the Philippines. In fact, a lot of stores found on the roads sell buffalo, cow, and
even goat meat. here are the local delicacies that you should not miss!
1. Bulalo (Balagtas, Batangas)
Bulalo is the signature food of Batangas. It is a simple dish when you check its
ingredients. It’s beef shank boiled in water filled with black pepper, garlic, onion, and
salt. Different vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, potatoes, cabbage, and corn are
also added.
2. KALAMAY KALAPIT Filipinos also love their sticky rice cake or kakanin, such as
suman. It differs from province to province, depending on where it is produced. The
Suman in Batangas is a chewy, nutty dish that may be served either hot or chilled.
There are several varieties of Sumang Batangas, but one of the tourists' favorites is the
Kalamay-Kapit. Cooked rice flour mixed with coconut milk and sugar is what you'll find
in this dish. If you like coconut, you'll enjoy this kakanin.
And lastly, Seedling Bowl of the Nation Talisay is accountable for the largest
growth production of seedlings/ saplings than in any other town in the country. It is said
that almost 80% to 85% of seedlings/saplings that reach other provinces in the
Philippines came from Talisay, thus acquiring the tagline ‘SEEDLING BOWL OF THE
NATION’. With a huge production of punla, the local government thought of another
festival to celebrate — the PUNLAD Festival.
PUNLAD is derived from the phrase “punla sa pag-unlad”. Indeed, the seedlings which
the locals are continuously growing contribute to the town’s development and
prosperity.
