Transformer Winding
Transformer Winding
08/EE/52
A transformer is a static device that
transfers electrical energy from
one circuit to another through
the transformer's winding.
Turns Ratio =
Step down transformer
Step up transformer
According to the arrangement there are 6 types of
winding-
a) Disc Winding
- used in high capacity transformer.
- conductors can be single-stripe or strands
connected in parallel.
- stranded conductors
of rectangular or circular
cross-section can be used.
- In transformer
having high current
rating, a no. of strands
of conductors may be
connected in parallel
in each turn.
c) Double Helical winding
- used in LV winding of high power rating transformer
- while the current rating and hence no. of parallel
conductors required
is high and single
helical winding with
normal height can not
feel up the window
height properly , this
type of winding is used
d) Multi-layer Helical winding
- used for HV winding of transformer
- large no. of turns are divided in a no. of radial layers
to restrict the total height of transformer.
e) Cylindrical winding
- individual cylindrical layers are placed axially one over
the other.
- used in transformer with high current and low voltage
rating.
f ) Cross-over winding
- each coil consists of a no. of layers with a
no. of turns per layer.
