Module 1 - Foundations of Biochemistry

The document is a message from Mrs. Beverly B. Santos to nursing students about an upcoming biochemistry lecture. It provides an introduction to biochemistry, explaining that it is the study of molecules that make up living organisms and overlaps with organic and inorganic chemistry. It notes that the human body is composed of important biological macromolecules like proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. The lecture topics will include an introduction to biochemistry, the historical milestones in biochemistry, and the major biomolecules in the human body.

MC1: BIOCHEMISTRY (LECTURE)

UNIVERSITY OF THE CORDILLERAS

COLLEGE OF NURSING
INSTRUCTOR: MRS. BEVERLY B. SANTOS - BENTRES

MESSAGE TO LEARNERS

Welcome to Biochemistry – one of your favourite subjects! The Chemistry of life.

Biochemistry is a branch of biology, which deals with the molecules that make
up living organisms. Somewhat, it overlaps with organic chemistry that deals with
carbon – containing and inorganic chemistry.

Our body is composed of biological macromolecules such as proteins,

carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids that are necessary for life. However,
some of us might have unclear knowledge and understanding on how these
biological macromolecules function in the body. Still, such awareness will help us
in our own personal health and education, as well as its application in the health
care setting.

Let us then explore the foundation of Biochemistry.

This Module then contains the following topics.

1. Introduction to Biochemistry

2. The Historical Milestones in Biochemistry

3. Major Biomolecules in the Human Body
