Self Test

1. Solve the self-test questions in a two-column table with answers in one line and reasons where specified. There are 15 multiple-choice or short-answer questions testing calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations concepts. 2. The test is designed to be completed within one hour to allow for self-training and evaluation. Questions cover solving differential equations, finding Laplace transforms, determining if sets are vector spaces, finding bases, and properties of matrices. 3. Topics on the test include first-order differential equations, Laplace transforms, vector spaces, linear algebra concepts such as basis and subspaces, and properties of matrices like the trace of a skew-symmetric matrix.

Self test

Answer the questions within two pages by preparing a two-column table on each page. Thus
each page will have ten boxes. In each box you have to write the answer. Write a one line
reason only if it asked, otherwise do not write anything other than the answer. You have
one hour in hand. The time has been set short deliberately so that you can train and test
yourself.
4y
1. Solve y 0 + = 6x − 5, x > 0, y(1) = 1. Express the solution in the form of y = f (x).
x
2. Consider sin xy 0 = sin x sin 2x + y cos x, y(π/6) = 3/2. Find y(π/4).

3. Consider (2x − y 2 ) + y = 0. By reversing the role of x and y (or) otherwise, find the
general solution.

4. Is the function ( 2

5. Use suitable manipulations to solve the following.

4xy 0 + sin 2y = 4 cos2 y, y(0.25) = 0.

6. Find the Lapalce transform of the following

0, otherwise.

7. Find the Laplace inverse of 3s .

8. Solve y 0 + 4y = g(t) where

0,
 if 0 ≤ t < 1
g(t) = 12, if 1 ≤ t < 3

0, if t ≥ 3.

9. Solve y 0 + y = δ(t − 1) + 2, y(0) = 0, 0 ≤ t ≤ 6.

12. Is the set of polynomial satisfying p(3) = 0 as vector space?.

13. Find a basis of R3 with two of its vectors from the basis being {(1, 2, 5), (0, 1, 2)}.

14. Find the solution space of 3x + 2y + 6z = 0, −x − y + 2z = 0, 2x + y + 2z = 0.
