Fillmore's love of lita and simple goodness is expressed in every note he put on paper. His lifelong love of his instrument, the trombone, was expressed in a collection of fifteen trombone “smears” which he composed from the rid teens through the twenties. “Lassus Trombone" was a great favorite of John Philip Sousa who mistakenly thought that Fillmore was a black man, because of its infectious jazzy ragtime rhythms! Fillmore became an overnight success due 10 the unrivaled popularity of “Lassus” (which stands for molasses). Fillmore biographer Paul Bierley reports that of the numerous: recordings produced during the composer's lifetine, Henry's favorite was the one arranged and performed by’ popular ‘comedic musician Spike Jones. Henry Fillmore continued to ‘compose happy tuneful music throughout his whole life. Music is greatly enriched...and the world a much happier place ‘because of this great man, the band world’s own Uncle Henry! THIS EDITION Care should be taken to keep the tempo at a cake-walk speed. Accents should be very exaggerated and snappy. Keep notes short and well-spaced, and, for heaven's sake, have fun! Henry would have wanted it that way! Please note the use of the “= begin featured part and the > = end featured part. This system should be used to allow inner voices and counter-themes to project out of the normal tutti fabric ofthe piece. ‘This edition of Lassus Trombone is lovingly dedicated to Paul E. Bierley, the man who made John Philip Sousa and Henry Filmore come alive for several generations of musicians. NO ‘one knows these two composers or their music better, and we hhave so much to thank Paul Bierley for. Loras J. Schissel ‘This arrangement is dedicated to Paul E.
