about the favorite television programs of Americans teenagers. I will start by asking you 
what your favorite program is. Then we will talk about it.

and I will start the conversation by suggesting a particular gift. Then we will talk about that 
suggestion. 
 
11. [Teacher initiates] I am your friend and we are planning a party for Friday night. I would 
like to invite another friend of mine. We will talk about how you feel about having him/her at 
the party. I will start the conversation.

conversation by asking you what is going on at school. You let me know what is happening. 
 
5. [Teacher Initiates] I am your friend. Your cousin from out of town is going out with us. I 
want to find out more about your cousin. I will start the conversation. 
 
6. [Student Initiates] I am an exchange student who has just arrived in your community. Tell 
me about your community. You start the conversation. 
 
7. [Student Initiates] I am your [language] teacher. You and your family are moving away.

to study. I will start the conversation by telling you that I still intend to go to the basketball 
game.You try to talk me out of it. 
 
3. [Student initiates] I am your friend. We made plans to eat at a local restaurant tomorrow 
afternoon. You prefer a different restaurant. Try to convince me to go to the other restaurant.

4. [Teacher initiates] I am the president of the [language] club. I want the club to take a field
