GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia.
Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands with a total land area of 300,000
square kilometers (115,831 sq mi). It is the world's 5th largest island country (archipelago). The eleven
largest islands contain 95% of the total land area. The largest of these islands is Luzon at about 105,000
square kilometers (40,541 sq mi). The next largest island is Mindanao at about 95,000 square kilometers
(36,680 sq mi). The archipelago is around 800 kilometers (500 mi) from the Asian mainland and is located
between Taiwan and Borneo.

The islands are volcanic in origin, being part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and are mostly mountainous. The
highest point in the country is the peak of Mount Apo in Mindanao, which is 2,954 meters (9,692 ft) above
sea level. The second highest point can be found on Luzon at Mount Pulag, a peak 2,842 meters (9,324 ft)
above sea level.

It has seven mountain ranges, the greatest of which is the Sierra Madre in north-central Luzon.. The country
has more than 50 volcanoes, some of which are active. The greatest is Mount Mayon known for its perfect
cone. Another famous volcano in the country is the Taal Volcano, considered to be the smallest volcano in
the islands but very active.

Nearly all islands in the country are crisscrossed by rivers, some of which are navigable. The largest river
system is the Rio Grande de Mindanao (Agoncillo,1990). Other rivers are the Jalaur and Panay rivers in
Panay; Rio Grande de Pampanga, the Agno and the Pasig Rivers in Luzon, the Agusan and Agus rivers in
northern Mindanao; and the famous underground rivers in Palawan. Through time, rivers have served
multiple functions for Filipinos. They have been used as highways of transportation and communication,
especially for trade and commerce. They provide food for the people.

They also provide opportunities for people in the rural areas to socialize with the each other as when they
wash together on the riverbanks. Also significant is the fact that Filipinos established their settlements along
the banks of the rivers. Today, many towns and cities in the Philippines are situated along the mouths of
rivers flowing into the sea. The Philippines has a tropical climate

The Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos,
during his expedition in 1542, named the islands of Leyte and Samar Felipinas after the then-Prince of
Asturias. Eventually the name Las Islas Filipinas would be used to cover all the islands of the archipelago

FAQs (Frequently Asked questions)

Since we know you have questions about this lesson, we write 2 items and answer it on your behalf so
it will be clear to you. Please read the following questions and the corresponding answers to it.

Question 1. Where did the Philippines originate from?

Answer: The Philippines were claimed in the name of Spain in 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese
explorer sailing for Spain, who named the islands after King Philip II of Spain. They were then called Las
Felipinas.

Question 2. What is the Filipino race considered?

Answer: Officially, of course, Filipinos are categorized as Asians and the Philippines as part of Southeast Asia.
But describing Filipinos as Pacific Islanders isn't necessarily wrong either. In fact, for a long
time, Filipinos were known as Pacific Islanders
