 For Accurate True Headings


This device displays and outputs the true heading as long as the variation is accurate and the de-
viation is correct. If there is any factor that causes the variation or deviation to change, this device
may not display or output the accurate true heading.
Factors that may cause the variation to change include:
• Lightning
• Magnetic storm
• Voyages in particular sea areas under the influence of magnetic fields (e.g., Elba Island, St.
Helena Island, etc.)
• Vessel movement (manual variation correction)
Factors that may cause the deviation to change include:
• Vessel movement
• Vessel listing
• Change of cargo
• Shock
• Influence of other vessels or nearby constructions
• Voyages in particular sea areas under the influence of magnetic fields (e.g., Elba Island, St.
Helena Island, etc.)

1. OUTLINE

1.1 Outline
This device display and output true heading, magnetic heading, variation and deviation. True
heading is calculated with magnetic heading, variation and deviation.
For correction of variation, two functions are provided. One function is for automatically correcting
variation based upon position information and UTC information from the GPS Receiver (OP-
TION). The other function is for allowing the operator to manually enter and set correction data.
For correction of deviation, a function is provided for allowing the operator to manually enter and
set correction data.

2.1 Index to Parts and Controls

This key applies setting values, move between screens,
check occurrence of failures, and stop the buzzer.
DOWN, UP keys
These keys select displays

This key moves to the display
setup menu from the Normal
mode, and back to the Normal
mode from the any screens.

Name Function and Operation Method


LCD display Displays various data and system information.
This key is used for moving to other screens from the Normal mode.
MODE key When the MODE key is pressed in the Normal mode, the display switches to the display
setup menu.
MODE
Also, when the MODE key is pressed after setting or verifying data in various screens, the
Normal mode is switched to.
DOWN key
The functions of these keys differ depending on the operation screen.
▼ These keys are used for moving between screens in modes other than the Normal
mode.
They are also used for switching display information in any screen and for setting data.
UP key
In the dimmer setup, contrast setup, deviation correction, variation correction, and
▼ alignment correction screens, they are used for selecting setting values.

SET/Bz STOP key


This key is used for applying setting values or stop the buffer (for checking failure).

Also, used for applying settings made in the Setup mode.

FAIL LED This LED blinks or lights when an error has occurred.
When the key is pressed with an error occurring, blinking of the LED stops and the

Note

FAIL LED is not operation key. If you push strong, it maybe cause malfunction.

2.2 Inverting the Display Color


The text and background of the LCD display can be inverted. [Normal mode]

At starting black text on a white background is selected.


The text and background can be inverted by pressing the MODE key with the SET
BZ STOP

key held down in the Normal mode. This feature is provided in the Normal
mode and is not available in other screens.
(Black text on a white background is used for body text descriptions.)

2.3.2 Back to the Normal Mode


You can move to the Normal mode by pressing the MODE key in any screen.
If you return to the Normal mode while you are setting or correcting setting values in the Setup
mode, details you have set so far will be cancelled.

2.4 How to View Screens


This section describes how to view screens.

2.4.1 How to View the Normal Mode

The current heading is displayed as the true heading.
When the magnetic heading is in error, the true heading is displayed as “---.-”.
(2) Magnetic heading
The current prow heading is displayed as the magnetic heading.
When the magnetic heading is in error, “---.-” is displayed.
(3) Variation
The variation is displayed. If you select automatic collection, this value shows variation of
present position. If you select manual correction, this value shows you set.
E’ly indicates that the corrected value (unit: °) is Easterly, and W’ly indicates that it is
Westerly. If any error related with GPS receiver signal will be occurred, the text “VAR.” is
displayed inversely.
(4) Deviation
The deviation is displayed.
E’ly indicates that the corrected value (unit: °) is Easterly, and W’ly indicates that it is
Westerly.

2.4.2 How to View the Main Menu Mode


This item describes the display setup menu using the Main Menu mode as an example.

2.5 Changing Screen Brightness

To change the screen brightness, change the setting value at
“DIMMER SET” or press / ▼ key at Normal mode. In this

screen, you can set the brightness of the LCD display and the

2.6 Changing Display LCD Contrast

To change the screen contrast, change the setting value at “CONTRAST SET”.

2.7 Correcting Deviation


To correct the deviation, change the correction value at “DEVIATION”.

To apply a correction value, press the SET

To cancel a correction value, press the MODE key. The screen moves to
the Normal mode.

2.8 Correcting Variation


To correct the variation, change the correction value at “VARIATION”.

To change the correction value in the Easterly direction,
press the key. The maximum value is 180.0° E’ly.

To change the correction value in the Westerly direction,


press the ▼ key. The maximum value is 179.9° W’ly.
To apply a correction value, press the SET

To cancel a correction value, press the MODE key. The screen
moves to the Normal mode.

The true heading is calculated as follows when the magnetic direction is 218.2°, deviation is 002.6° W’ly and vari-
ation is 004.7° E’ly:
True heading = magnetic direction + deviation + variation
=218.2 + (-002.6) +(+004.7)
=220.3
Accordingly, the true heading in this case becomes 220.3°.

2.9 Correcting Alignment


To correct the alignment (installation error), change the correction value at “ALIGNMENT”. In this
screen, you can correct the sensor installation error with respect to
ALIGNMENT

When you press the key, the device judges the password.

If the password is correct, the screen moves to “ALIGN-


MENT”. If the password is incorrect, the screen moves to the
“ALIGNMENT” Selection mode.
To move to the Normal mode, press the MODE key.

Note

Pay sufficient attention when performing this correction. The pass-
word for this correction is “43”.
If the screen moves to “ALIGNMENT”, turn off the system using ALIGNMENT
switch on the INTERCONNECT UNIT. Present data are kept in the
memory.

(4) “ALIGNMENT” corrects the installation error of the sensor 12


times from 000° in 30° increments.
Pressing the key performs the correction, and the device
SET

stands by for correction at the next heading position. If there


is an error in the correction value of greater than ±10° with
respect to a predetermined value, a short buzzer sounds and
the FAIL LED lights to notify you of the error. Alignment correction is

2.10 Checking the data communication from


GPS receiver (OPTION)
To check the serial data signal from GPS receiver, verify the information at “INFORMATION”.

2.11 Checking Error Information


To check error information, verify the information at “ERROR CHECK”.

to display “ERROR CHECK”. (See section 2.3.1, “Moving be-


tween Screens”.)
The current error information is displayed in the screen.
 When there is no error
ERROR CHECK
“NO ERROR” is displayed. Press the MODE key to move to the Nor- Selection mode

 When there are any errors


“N ERRORS” is displayed. N is number of errors. Pressing SET
BZ STOP

key, “ERROR:” is displayed, and the error details are displayed.


The error status is displayed at “STATUS:”. “CANCELED” indi-
cates that the cause of the alarm has been removed, and “CON-
TINUE” indicates that the cause of the alarm is still present.
“Display No./total number of errors” is also displayed at the bot-
tom right of the screen.

The following key operations are possible in this screen.


Pressing the key when there are two or more errors displays

Pressing the ▼ key when there are two or more errors displays information in question that

2.13 Performing an LCD Display/Buzzer Test


Perform the LCD display/buzzer test in the Normal mode.

(1) Display the Normal mode. (See section 2.3.1, “Moving between DISPLAY/BUZZER TEST
Screens”.)
Hold down both the and ▼ keys continuously. While both

keys are held down, the test pattern is repeatedly displayed in


order “black”, “white”, “several types of vertical stripes” and then
back to “white” again so that you can inspect the state of the
LCD display.
During the test, the buzzer sounds, the FAIL LED lights, and
the backlight for the operation keys is displayed at maximum Figure 2.13.1

2.14 Operation at an Error


“ERROR NOTICE” is automatically displayed on the LCD display when errors occurs.
At this time, the FAIL LED blinks and the buzzer sounds.

2.14.1 System Error ERROR NOTICE


(1) Information about the error that occurred is displayed at “ERROR NO-
TICE”.

2.14.2 CPU FAIL


When CPU FAIL is occurred, the FAIL LED lights and the buzzer sounds. * Press the MODE key to return
to the Normal mode.
To stop the buzzer, press the SET
BZ STOP key.
