WS-21-22 (Factoring Polynomials B-Q1)

This document contains a worksheet on factoring polynomials for a 10th grade Pascal student. It provides examples of factoring quadratic trinomials, the sum and difference of two cubes, and grouping. The student is asked to factor 8 polynomials completely using the different factoring methods. The worksheet is intended to help the student practice factoring polynomials and determining the appropriate method to use in different problems.

WORKSHEET 21 & 22 – FIRST QUARTER

Topic: FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

MELC: Factors polynomials using: 1.) quadratic trinomial. 2.) sum and difference of two cubes.
3.) grouping.
Quadratic Trinomial Grouping
Remember: 2 Sum & Difference of Two Cubes
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 2 + 𝑎𝑐𝑥 + 𝑏𝑐
3
x + bx + c = (x + m)(x + n) 𝑥 3 ± 𝑦 3 = (𝑥 ± 𝑦)(𝑥 2 ∓ 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 )
where: b = m + n; c = mn = [𝑥 2 (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)] + [𝑐(𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)]
= (𝑥 2 + 𝑐)(𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
- Factor each polynomial completely.

1.) x2 + 8x + 15 2.) 8x3 – 27y3 3.) 2x3 – x2 + 6x – 3

b = 8; c = 15; m = 3 & n = 5 (Why?) = (𝟐𝒙 − 𝟑𝒚)(𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝟔𝒙𝒚 + 𝟗𝒚𝟐 ) = x2(2x – 1) + 3(2x – 1)
= (x + 3)(x + 5) (How?) (How?) = (x2 + 3)(2x – 1) (How?)

*How can we determine which method are we going to use for the given polynomial?

4.) 10x3y2 – 25x2y2 – 15xy2 5.) x6 – 64y6

= 5xy2(2x2 – 5x – 3) (Why?) = (x3 + 8y3)(x3 – 8y3) (Why?)
= 5xy2(2x + 1)(x – 3) (How?) = (x+2y)(x2 – 2xy + 4y2)(x – 2y)(x2+ 2xy +4y2) (How?)

*How can we determine whether your answer is “factored completely”?

TRY IT YOURSELF!!!
*Factor each polynomial completely. Write your answers on the blank space provided. God bless! (“,)

1.) x2 + 9x + 14 5.) x3 – 5x2 + 2x – 10
