Combined Science Component 2-1

This document provides information about a CALA (Competency-Based Assessment and Learning Activity) for Form 3 students on the topic of the life cycle of the malaria vector. The CALA has two parts: Part A requires students to identify the malaria vector, study its life cycle stages, and identify breeding places around the school. Part B requires students to write a report on their findings and present their data to the School Health Master, making recommendations on how to handle the breeding places. Students will be assessed based on their skills in executing the activities, collecting and presenting data, and working within the time constraints. The CALA aims to help students investigate and understand the life cycle of the malaria vector while also addressing the issue of

FACILITATOR’S CALA GUIDE

CALA COMPONENT B

LEARNING AREA: Combined Science

LEVEL: Form 3

DURATION : 2 weeks

SYL TOPIC: Health and Diseases

SUB TOPIC : The life cycle of Malaria Vector

COMPETENCES/SKILLS:

Investigate, draw, collect data, present data, interpret, recommend.

BACKGROUND/CONTEXT:

It has been observed that many learners in the school's neighbourhood often absent themselves from school due to malaria related illnesses.

THE CALA :This CALA consists of two parts A and B giving total marks of 40marks. Learners are required to do both.

PART A:

1. Identify the malaria vector. Study the stages in the life cycle of the malaria vector. (5)
2. Scout and identify the existing breeding places for the malaria vector within the school and its neighbourhood. (5)

PART B:

1. Write a short report on your findings using the information you gathered in part A. In your report name the vector for the malaria
parasite.Draw and label the stages in the life cycle of the vector.(15)
2. You are also required to do presentation of your data findings to the School Health Master on the types and number of the malaria vector
breeding places you identified. Make an interpretation of the data. Conclude by making recommendations on how to handle the breeding
places. Your report will be useful to the School Health Master for him to be able to convince the Community Health Worker to act. Your
heading for the report must be: REPORT ON FINDINGS ON TOPIC (20marks)

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED:

Your facilitator will assess you through set achievement standards.

The achievement standards will be based on your skills to execute the

Guide lines as in activities in parts A and B and ability to be time conscious.

CALA TIPS:

This CALA assumes that you know what a disease vector is. The CALA also assumes you know that the malaria vector breeds in stagnant water.
It is also assumed that you have the skills for data collection and presentation and touse ICT.

CROSS CUTTING THEMES:

The CALA demonstrates the inter-connections among Science (in knowledge on spread of diseases), Mathematics (in data presentation and
interpretation), Geography (in environmental issues), English language (in report making) and ICT.
