Geometric

 Mean

1.   Draw  the  three  similar  triangles.

2.   Write  a  proportion  to  find  t.    Write  a  proportion  to  find  u.    Solve  each  proportion  for  t  and  u.

Corollary  1:    When  an  altitude  is  drawn  to  the  hypotenuse  of  a  right  triangle,  the  length  of  the  altitude
is  the  geometric  mean  between  the  segments  of  the  hypotenuse.

𝑎𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒 =   ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒  𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 ∗ ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒  𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡

Corollary  2:    When  an  altitude  is  drawn  to  the  hypotenuse  of  a  right  triangle,  each  leg  is  the  geometric
mean  between  the  hypotenuse  and  the  part  of  the  hypotenuse  that  is  adjacent  to  the  leg.

𝑙𝑒𝑔 = ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒  𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 ∗ 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒  ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒

Example:

3.   Given  DDEF  with  altitude  𝐹𝐺.    Determine  x,  if  y  =  9  and  z  =  36.

Practice:

4.   If  y  =  2  and  x  =  16,  determine  z.

5.   If  x  =  18  and  z  =  45,  determine  y.

6.   Find  JM  and  KM.

7.   Given  DAYE  with  altitude  𝐴𝑆  as  shown,  solve  the  following:

  a.   x  =  4  cm,  z  =  9  cm,  determine  t,  u  and  w.

  b.   x  =  6  cm,  t  =  12  cm,  determine  z,  u  and  w.

  c.   z  =  18  cm,  t  =  32  cm,  determine  x.

8.   Find  PJ.

9.   Given  right  triangle  XYZ,  with  altitude  𝑊𝑍,  find  each  length.

  a.   If  XW  =  3  and  WY  =  12,         b.   If  WZ  =  4  and  XW  =  2,
determine  ZY.             determine  WY.

c.   If  XY  =  22  and  XW  =  9,         d.   If  XZ  =  10  and  XW  =  4,
determine  WZ  and  ZY.         determine  XY.

  e.   If  WZ  =  18  and  XW  =  9,       f.   If  WZ  =  4,  XW  =  x  and  XY  =  10,
determine  XZ.             determine  ZY.
