Levels of Management
• The term “Levels of Management” refers to a line of demarcation between
various managerial positions in an organization.
• The hierarchy of management positions from top to bottom.
• The number of levels will depend upon the size of business, number of
workers and effective span of control.
• The level of manager determines the amount of authority and status
enjoyed by him.

Top Management/Administrative Level
• It includes-
✓ Board of Directors
✓ Chief Executives
✓ Managing Director
• Functions-
✓ Lays down objectives & policies of the organisation.
✓ Taking decisions for the accomplishment of the goals of the enterprise.
✓ It controls & coordinates the activities of all the departments.
✓ Keeping the communication between the enterprise and the outside world.
✓ Reviewing the work of executives at different levels to ensure that their
performance is in accordance with the objectives laid down.

Middle Management/ Executory
• It includes-
✓ Division Heads
✓ Branch Managers
✓ Departmental Managers
• Functions-
✓ Carry out the plans of the organization according to the policies and
directives laid down by the top-level management.
✓ Appraising the performance of subordinates.
✓ Designate certain tasks and duties to them, drive them to accomplish
aspired objectives.
✓ Achieving coordination between different sections or units.

Lower Management/ Supervisory/
Operational
• It includes-
✓ Supervisors
✓ Foreman
✓ Section Officers
✓ Superintendent etc.
• Functions-
✓ They oversee and direct the operative employees. They spend most of
their time addressing the functions of the firm, as instructed by the
managers above them.
✓ To arrange for necessary materials, machine tools etc., for workers & to
provide them the necessary working environment.
✓ Provide training to the workers.
✓ Solve the problems of the workers.
✓ To communicate worker’s problem to the higher level management.

Managerial Skills
• Managerial skills are the knowledge and ability of the individuals in a
managerial position to fulfill some specific management activities or tasks.
• When we talk about managerial skills, we talk about the skills of a manager
to maintain high efficiency in the way how his or her employees complete
their everyday working tasks. Because of that, managers will need skills that
will help them to manage people and technology to ensure an effective and
efficient realization of their working duties.
• Robert Katz identifies three types of skills that are
essential for a successful management process:
✓ Technical skills,
✓ Conceptual skills and
✓ Human or interpersonal management skills.

Technical Skills
• Implies proficiency in a specific kind of activity, particularly one involving:
- Methods
- Processes
- Procedures, or
- Techniques
• It involves specialized knowledge, analytical ability within that specialty, and
facility in the use of the tools and techniques of the specific discipline.
• Technical skills involve skills that give the managers the ability and the
knowledge to use a variety of techniques to achieve their objectives.

Human Skills
• The human or the interpersonal skills are the skills that present the
managers’ ability to interact, work or relate effectively with people.
• These skills enable the managers to make use of human potential in the
company and motivate the employees for better results.
• Interpersonal management skills are essential for all hierarchical levels
in the company.

Conceptual Skills
• These involve the skills managers present in terms of the knowledge and
ability for abstract thinking and formulating ideas.
• The manager is able to see an entire concept, analyze and diagnose a
problem, and find creative solutions.
• This helps the manager to effectively predict hurdles their department or
the business as a whole may face.
