MENTAL HEALTH
Definition
Mental health is a condition of mental wellness that enables people to manage life's stressors,
develop their potential, study and work effectively, and give back to their communities. It is a
crucial element of health and well-being that supports both our individual and group capacity to
decide, form connections, and influence the world we live in. A core human right is access to
mental health. Additionally, it is essential for socioeconomic, communal, and personal
development. The absence of mental diseases is only one aspect of mental wellness. It has varying
degrees of difficulty and distress, is experienced differently by each individual, and may have very
different social and clinical outcomes. It exists on a complex continuum.
Mental health is a condition of mental wellness that enables people to manage life’s stressors,
develop their potential, study and work effectively, and give back to their communities.
Being knowledgeable about mental health is important because it helps individuals better
understand and care for their own and others' mental well-being. It can also contribute to early
recognition and intervention of mental health issues, reducing the stigma associated with seeking
help, and promoting a more empathetic and supportive society. On the other hand, poor mental
health can lead to a range of problems, including decreased productivity, relationship difficulties,
and increased risk for physical health problems. Investing in mental health is important for
individuals, families, and society as a whole.
In summary, promoting mental health awareness is critical for reducing stigma, improving access
to care, and promoting overall mental health and well-being.
STEPS
Mental health has been a controversial case during the first 2 years after the pandemic
struck, many individuals suffered from imbalance of mental health that escalated to a much worse
case of it, depression and anxiety. According to the National Library of Medicine (nd), mental
health refers to our emotional state, psychological, and social well-being. It helps one to determine
how to be able handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
According to the World Health Organization (2021), it was noted that people from all
walks of life have experienced stress throughout the pandemic, not only from frontline workers
who are overwhelmed with work, children who cannot attend school to reduce transmission, family
members who are separated from each other, but also by those who are impacted by loss of loved
ones. The Mental Health Foundation of the United Kingdom gave emphasis to the context of
mental health that protecting it is easier than everybody thinks. Every individual can do it
everyday, and with simple activities that one can feel relief, the more chances will be able to cope
with life.
Here are the 5 things you can do to help you cope in any event that may cause stress and
proffer unsettling sentiment to your mental health:
1. Talk to Someone You Can Trust and Get Help When You Need It
Seeking help is a sign of strength, it is never a weakness.Talking to someone you
can trust whether it is a friend, a family member, or a colleague can help. You may
feel better if you are able to openly share what you are going through with someone
who cares about you.
2. Value Yourself
Treat yourself with kindness and respect similar to how you treat other people and
avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects, or broaden
your horizons by exploring new things.
3. Exercise
Being physically active improves brain health. Physical activity is especially
important for people with mental health problems, as they are more likely to have
a poor diet, smoke or drink alcohol to excess.
EXAMPLES
1. Eating Disorders
- An eating disorder is a problem with eating. People who have this problem tend to become
very focused on their food and their weight, which can result in serious problems, such as
anxiety or depression. There are three main types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa (a
fear of gaining weight), bulimia nervosa (where a person eats a lot of food in a short period
of time), and binge eating disorder (where a person eats more food than they usually do).
3. Paranoia
- Paranoia is a mental illness in which a person's thoughts become focused on people or
things they believe are harmful or threatening. This can make it difficult for that person to
socialize and connect with others.
5. Psychosis
- A psychosis causes a person to think erratically. They might not be able to recall or
comprehend what they did or said, and they might have unreasonable thoughts. Focusing
and making clear judgments may be challenging as a result. There might be some
misunderstanding left over even after the episode is over.
6. Anxiety Disorders
- Anxiety disorders fall within the category of mental health issues. It's challenging to get
through the day when you're anxious. Sweating and a fast heartbeat are symptoms, along
with feelings of nervousness, panic, and fear. Untreated, anxiety disorders can lead to
significant impairment in people's daily lives. Medication and cognitive behavioral therapy
are forms of treatment.
9. Depression
- Major depressive disorder or clinical depression are two diagnoses for depression, a
pervasive mood disease. It may appear as a depressed mood, despair, guilt, irritability, or
restlessness. Depression may make it harder for you to make decisions, sleep, or be as
productive as you normally are. You might have trouble eating, and you might have
suicidal or self-destructive ideas. Aches, pains, headaches, and stomach issues could also
be present. While some people with depression may experience it in distinct episodes,
others may find that it affects them in a more ambient yet low-level way.
Nursing tips
2. Take a rest
- Lack of sleep can have serious consequences for your mental health. Therefore,
getting enough sleep helps you maintain optimal health and well-being. The
quality of your sleep is just as important as the quantity.
