Measurements and Conversion of Units

The document discusses measurement units and systems, focusing on the International System of Units (SI) used by scientists. It explains that the SI system, based around multiples of ten, is easier to use and understand globally compared to other systems like English units. Guidelines are provided for converting between different units like centimeters to meters, kilograms to grams, and minutes to hours using the standard prefixes and conversion factors of the SI system.

Measurements

Nature of Science

The
International
System of Units
Benchmarks:
Use tools and equipment appropriate to
scientific investigations.
Use metric measurement devices in an
investigation.
Estimation
Estimation is using your knowledge of
something similar in size or amount to
determine the size of the new object.
o Helps to make a rough
measurement of an object
o Usefully when you are in
a hurry and exact
numbers are not required
Precision and Accuracy
Precision is a
description of how
close measurements
are to each other.

Accuracy is
comparing your
measurement to the
actual or accepted
value.
Why use the SI System?
Scientists use the SI
System worldwide
because:

⚫ Measurements are easily understood by all

scientists
⚫ Measurements are easier to convert than the
English system
Why use the SI System?
In the U.S., they use the
English or Standard
System while most of the
rest of the world uses the
Metric or SI System.

The SI (International System of Units)

system is the form of measurement typically
used by scientists.
Measurement System Comparisons
MEASUREMENT ENGLISH SI SYSTEM
LENGTH Yard / Inch Meter / Centimeter
MASS Ounce / Pound Gram / Kilogram
VOLUME Quart Liter
TEMPERATURE Fahrenheit Kelvin/Celsius
TIME Second Second

All measurement systems have standards.

Standards are exact quantities that everyone
agrees to use as a basis of comparison.
In the English system, you have to
remember so many numbers . . .
⚫ 12 inches in a foot
⚫ 3 feet in a yard
⚫ 5,280 feet in a mile
⚫ 16 ounces in a pound
⚫ 4 quarts to a gallon

In the SI System, you only have to

remember one number...
The SI System is based on the number
10.
What do we measure?
● SI Unit of Measurements
■ length meter
■ mass (weight) kilogram
■ volume liter
■ density kg/m3
■ time second
■ temperature Kelvin
■ Electrical current Ampere (amp)

■ Electrical Voltage Volts

■ Derived quantities : density, velocity, force, etc...

Using the metric system
■ In the metric system, prefixes are used
to identify the multiples of ten.
103 102 101 1 10-1 10-2
10-3
Kilo Hecto Deka BASE Deci Centi Milli
Base units
● mass gram(g)
● length meter (m)
● liquid volume liter (l)
● time second (s)

Each multiple is one decimal place.

Rules when doing Problem of
Conversion
Rule 1: Write the units for the answer.
Rule 2: Determine what information to start with.
Rule 3: Arrange all other unit factors; showing
them as fractions with correct units in the
numerator and denominator so all units cancel
except for the units needed for the final
answer.
Rule 4: Check for correct units in the final answer.
Example:
1. 6,500 cm= ______m 65 m

2. 5.65 km= _______m 5650 m

3. 7,500 m= _______km 7.5 km

4. 3.45 cm= _______m 0.0345 m

5. 778 km= _______cm 77,800,000 cm

Example:
6. 2.5 kg= ______g 2,500 g

7. 50 ml= _______L 0.05 L

8. 10 L= _______ ml 10,000 ml

9. 364 mins= _______hrs 6.07 hrs

10. 9475 sec= _______hrs 2.63 hrs
