Ex.2 Calibration of Pressure and Vacuum Gauges

The document describes an experiment to calibrate pressure and vacuum gauges using U-tube and inclined tube manometers. The procedure involves filling the manometers with water and connecting them to the gauges. Pressure is varied using a syringe and the water levels and gauge readings are recorded. Observations show the maximum error for the U-tube and inclined tube manometers were 26.09% and 10.31% respectively. Calculations determine the actual pressure measured by each manometer was close to 100,000 Pa. The conclusion is that the experiment allows measuring pressure and computing it using manometers, while observing the relationship between manometer pressure and gauge readings.

Aim:

1 Page HCT
To calibrate pressure gauge and vacuum gauge with the help of U-tube
manometer and inclined tube manometer and find the absolute pressure.

Apparatus:

- Inclined tube manometer.

- Quick connecting flexible hoses.
- Plastic syringe.
- Pressure gauge.
- Vacuum gauge.
- U – Tube manometer.

Description:

The Experimental setup contains a Manometer Panel is fitted with a U tube

manometer and a slanted tube manometer. It consists of a two dial manometer
for overpressure and under pressure. The manometer tubes have isolating quick
action connections on the ends so that connecting hoses can be connected. The
test pressure is generated using the plastic syringe and a connecting hose should
also be used for the syringe. The two tube manometers can be filled with the aid
of a funnel and ink can be mixed with the water first for improved readability.

procedure:

U- tube manometer

 Remove all the quick connecting hoses from the manometers to

remove the airlock.
 Fill the manometers with a sufficient amount of pure water
 Connect one end of the U- tube manometer limb to the pressure
gauge to be calibrated.
 Using the syringe increase the pressure to any desired value by
connecting it to the other end of the manometer.
 Note down the water levels in both the columns of the U- tube and
also the pressure gauge reading.
 Repeat the experiment for different pressure using the syringe.

Average vacuum pressure using manometer = 902.32

4 Page HCT
Calculations:

U tube manometer:

Actual pressure = Atm pressure + Gauge pressure

= 1 × 105 + 737.52 = 100.73 ×103𝑝𝑎

Inclined Tube Manometer:

Actual pressure= Atm pressure - vacuum pressure
= 1 × 105 − 902.32 = 99 × 103𝑝𝑎

Error (%) = (Max value-Min value) /(Max value) X100

(1500−1108.53) /1500 × 100 = 26.09%

Result:

After calculate the requirements we found :

- Maximum error for U tube manometer is = 26.09

- Minimum error for U tube manometer is = 10.07

- Maximum error for inclined manometer is = 10.31

- Minimum error for U tube manometer is = 0.38

- Actual pressure of U tube manometer is 100.73 × 103Pa

- Actual Pressure of the Inclined tube manometer is 99 × 103 Pa

Conclusion:

We learned
- How to measure pressure and compute pressure.
- We also observed that when the pressure in the manometer increases, the
pressure in the pressure gauge increases
