Thoracic: Inlet

The thoracic inlet is the opening at the base of the neck that leads into the thorax. It has anterior, posterior, and side boundaries and a reniform shape. Structures passing through it include muscles, viscera like the trachea and esophagus, nerves, and vessels. The suprapleural membrane is a reflection of parietal pleura that covers structures at the thoracic inlet. Conditions like cervical rib syndrome can compress the subclavian artery and cause hand wasting if not addressed.
