“Hard work always pays off in the end,” a quotation that could give you a
glimpse of what the short film “Pitaka” by Chris Cahilig is about. The film depicts an
elder brother, portrayed by Karl Medina, who provides money and sustains the
education of his younger brother, performed by Art Artienda. In an earlier scene, at
the kitchen’s breakfast table in the morning, the elder brother’s wallet is shown to be
old and empty, with barely enough money to make ends meet. Despite his financial
struggles, the elder brother never wavers in his commitment to providing for his
younger brother’s education. However, the younger brother appears rather indifferent
to the hard work of his elder brother is dedicating themselves to. Despite the obvious
signs of exhaustion on his elder brother’s face, the younger brother cannot resist the
temptations of being in his youth and often spends money on drinks and other
recreational activities. In addition, the younger brother brought his girlfriend over to
their house, disregarding that his brother might not be too pleased with the idea. Also,
not only because of the potential noise they might make but also because it could be
seen as a distraction to his studies. In that scene, the younger brother is not
considering his elder brother’s feelings or the consequences of his actions.
In the later part of the film, the younger brother gives his elder brother a
present: a new wallet with money, symbolising a new chapter in his life. By gifting his
elder brother a new wallet, the younger brother conveys his deep appreciation for his
brother’s hard work and dedication, as well as his hope for a better future. The gift of
a new wallet conveys a powerful message of the importance of family and the power
of love over material wealth.
After watching “Pitaka”, I was deeply moved by the themes of family, hard
work, and love explored in the film. I was inspired by Karl Medina and Art Artienda’s
portrayal of their roles. The perseverance in facing adversity and a great example of
the strengths or the extremes of familial love were astonishing and should be
commended. This movie was a great reminder of the importance of family and the
power of love over material wealth. For example, the usage of “wallet” shows that the
most incredible gifts do not come with a price tag. It made me reflect on my parents'
sacrifices for my siblings and me. It continuously reminded me to be always grateful
and appreciative for their hard work and dedication to give us a better life.
In addition, “Hard work always pays off in the end” is a lesson that has been
proven repeatedly. This theme of the short film struck and stayed in my mind while
writing this essay. It is a great film that reflects real-life situations and dilemmas of
commoners like us, who belongs to the “laylayan ng lipunan” or the average citizens.
It made realize that no matter how difficult the task or how long it takes, those who
put in the extra effort will eventually see the benefits of their labour. People who work
hard and stay dedicated to their goals are often rewarded with success, whether in the
form of a promotion, a new job, or a better overall quality of life. Hard work is the key
to achieving your dreams and will always pay off in the end.
This has been an invaluable lesson, and I am thankful for the opportunity to
watch and learn from “Pitaka.” I will strive for success and stay focused on my goals.
I will remember the importance of hard work and perseverance and will remember to
appreciate the love and support of family and friends. Finally, as Karl Medina and Art
Artienda’s characters have shown, anything is possible with a little bit of hard work,
patience, and determination.
