Social Media Lesson Plan

This lesson plan aims to teach students how to critically evaluate information found on social media. Students will first brainstorm information they have learned from social media platforms. They will then analyze the trustworthiness of these claims by researching online. As an activity, students will search for true and false facts to share with peers, who must determine the validity of each claim. The goal is for students to learn how to properly vet information from social media and identify misleading posts.

Social Media Lesson Plan – Social Media And the Influence on Children

Nathan Schroeder
Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba
EDUB 4100: Teacher and Technology
Dr. Reynold Redekopp
Theme: Information & Social Media

Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand the importance of critical
research skills. This lesson will challenge students to explore social media for examples of
misleading and truthful information, learn how to validate the claims made on social media and
create their own examples of informative social media posts.

Materials & Equipment:

 Handout 1.0
 Image 1.0
 Devices for Research

Four A Framework

Activating Prior Knowledge:

To activate students will be given a reflective brainstorming activity. Students will be
tasked with completing handout 1.0 where they will write down information which they have
learnt from any social media platform. (Instagram, Snap Chat, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Etc.
Once students have written down four examples of information acquired for social media, they
will compare their answers with their peers. Students should consider what types of answers their
peers gave. Did anyone have the same or similar information?

Acquiring New Knowledge:

Not all information you find online is trustworthy. Look at the following Advertisement.
(Image 1.0). This was a fake ad which was shared around social media in 2012. This ad resulted
in hundreds of people attempting to charge their phones inside a microwave. Research the
information you wrote down. Determine its truth value.

Applying New Knowledge
Your task is to search the web for four new pieces of information. Three of the facts
should be valid and true, teaching real pieces of information. One of the pieces of information
must be false. Try to find a Hoax which is convincing.
Once students have found their four pieces of information they will be broken into groups
of four and participate in a game. The game will task students with searching through another
team’s information to determine its truth value. They will receive 1 point for every correct
answer. The winner gets 1000 bonus marks.

Assessing the Knowledge

The assessment for this lesson with be determined by students’ ability to discover the
truth or falseness of facts found on social media. Students will demonstrate their understanding
by accessing online resources to research their chosen facts and sift through information.
Social Media Information – Handout 1.0

Task: Have you ever been scrolling through social media and came upon someone teaching you
new information? Maybe it was about a new product, teaching about a historical event,
advertising a ground breaking fitness routine, or giving a review of a new video game. In the
space below, provide four examples of pieces of information which you have learnt from social
media and indicate which platform you heard it on and if you believed them or not.
Ex. Water is wet, Tick Tock house hacks, Infographic Shorts.
