using tape measure, but it is the fastest way since the advantage of pacing for measurement is that it
does not require advanced instruments. However, it is not useful in measuring distance in rough
surfaces, uneven ground and other area where a person could not walk in straight line. It can be
affected since there is a slope, hump, or something that can interrupt the pace, causing errors, and get
incorrect measurements. Pacing needs to be performed with more than one trial. The more trial a
person does, the higher the precision he will get, and the smaller his mistakes will be. By doing this
fieldwork I concluded that there are a lot of errors in measuring distance by pacing because of the
length of each pace are differing through times. There were also situations in which I missed certain
people along my path, and there were cases when an object or hump was in front of me causing my
walk to be interrupted or not be as long as my natural steps. These mistakes I made were the cause of
my higher percent error in getting the distance of the unknown area. Pacing may be the easiest way to
measure a distance, but it is the least accurate method because it is only used to approximate a certain
distance. It can be used if an individual wants to know the assumed distance in a short period of time
but it is not recommended to use this method to obtain an accurate distance.
Doing a pacing and having different measurement of a pace cannot get us an accurate measurement of
distance by pacing. We concluded that it doesn’t matter if we have wide steps or not, we have our own
pace factor which can be used to determine a measured distance. It’s just a matter of having an accurate
procedure in obtaining our own pace factor, in this way we can assure that the estimation or
measurement that we can get is also accurate.
Breaking tape is more time consuming but more accurate than using the whole tape. Errors can be made
when using this method improperly. For long measurements in uneven grounds, the tape can commit
sagging if the tape was not pulled in order to make it straight. There will be also correction when it is
pulled off because the force applied on the tape will only make the tape stretch. Then, the errors cannot
be avoided when using the tape on uneven grounds.
There are possible sources error that can be made when the tape method in getting the measurement
of a distance. On even ground, an error can be made when the tape man was not measuring the course
on a straight path. This was cause by pole man if they are not checking the tape if it was going on a
straight path.
On uneven ground, errors can be made when the tape was not in horizontal position and if the plumb
bob was not aligned, other sources of errors can be made on the properties of the tape. Since we are
using steel tape, it depends on the weather, surroundings, force applied on the tape and others the
correction of the tape. It can expand and also compress.
Make sure that the range poles are vertically straight and that the plumbbob is perpendicular to the
tape to accurately measure the horizontal distance.

Breaking tape is more accurate than using the whole tape, but it requires more time. Inappropriate
application of this method can lead to mistakes. If the tape was not pulled to make it straight before
taking a long measurement over uneven ground, it may sag. There will be also correction when it is
pulled off because the force applied on the tape will only make the tape stretch. When utilizing the tape
on uneven grounds, inaccuracies cannot be prevented. When the tape is not horizontal when standing
on uneven ground, mistakes can occur, in addition to errors arising from the tape's inherent
characteristics. Also, the range poles' vertical straightness is also crucial so that we can accurately
estimate the horizontal distance.
