Slinky Waves Lab 2

1) The document describes a lab experiment using a slinky to investigate transverse and longitudinal waves. 2) For transverse waves, pulses are produced by shaking the slinky sideways, and the masking tape moves perpendicular to the direction of the pulse. 3) For longitudinal waves, pulses are produced by compressing and releasing sections of the slinky, and both the masking tape and pulse travel in the same direction along the slinky.

Slinky Waves Lab Name __________________________________

**YOU tangle it, YOU buy it!**

Purpose: Observe and investigate waves and their properties.

Transverse Waves

1. You and your partner stretch a slinky about 10 meters. Place a piece of masking tape at about the middle of the slinky.

2. Practice producing pulses along the spring by shaking it sideways on the floor. Each person should send single pulses along the
spring. Describe the wave motion. ___________________________________________________________________________

Draw a diagram of what the pulse looks like.

3. What direction does the piece of masking tape move as the pulse travels down the spring? ______________________________

4. What is the direction of the pulse as the pulse travels down the spring? ________________________________________________

5. Describe what happens to the amplitude as the wave travels along the spring. ___________________________________________

6. Produce transverse pulses and record the time it takes from when they are produced to when they return to you. Time for small
pulse: trial 1_______________, trial 2 ____________. Time for large pulse: trial 1 ______________, trial 2 ________________

7. What conclusion can you make about the speed of any size pulse that moves through the same medium?
___________________________________________________________________________________

8. What do you have to do to the slinky to increase the frequency? ____________________________________________________.

9. How does this affect the wavelength? ___________________________________________________________________________

10 How does this affect the wave’s speed? _________________________________________________________________________

Longitudinal (Compressional) Waves

1. Grasp one end of the spring while a partner grasps the other end. Produce a longitudinal wave by grabbing several coils down the
slinky, pulling and releasing the coils. Describe the wave motion. _____________________________________________________

Draw a diagram of what the pulse looks like.

2. What direction does the masking tape move as the pulse travels down the spring? _______________________________________

3. What is the direction of the pulse as the pulse travels down the spring? ________________________________________________

4. Calculate the speed of this wave. ____________________________________

4. Produce a chain of waves by repeatedly moving the end rhythmically forward and backward. The waves should travel along the
spring in a series of compressions and rarefactions. Does the size of the wave change as it travels along the spring? _______________
