Strings Beginning Lesson Plan
PEDAGOGY THREADS:
Assessment Strategies:
Throughout this rehearsal I will engage in formal assessment by: having them fine tune by themselves in the
future without reminders on how to do it
Throughout this rehearsal I will engage in informal assessment by: observing how students are tuning after
listening to procedures
➔ Greet class
➔ learning about fine tuning on strings
➔ Goals for this lesson:
◆ successfully be able to fine tune instrument
◆ give ears a workout (to prep for those aural skills exams)
➔ We will need:
◆ our string instruments (NO BOWS!)
◆ our tuning forks (we use A440 as reference pitch)
◆ pitch app, if students would like
◆ our ears!
➔ Show peg box on violin
➔ students identify their peg box
➔ show pegs on violin
➔ students point to their pegs
➔ to students: pegs are for when our instruments are severely out of tune
◆ not worrying about that today
◆ if you think your instrument may need tuning with pegs, raise hand and
Hannah will come assist
➔ show tailpiece on violin
➔ students identify their tailpiece
➔ show fine tuners on violin
➔ students point to their fine tuners
➔ this is what they will be using
➔ ask class: what string should we always start with? (A) why?
◆ explain why/give questions
➔ grab tuning fork
◆ time to identify/tonicize D major
➔ identify D major with students
➔ tonicize D major with students
➔ DSRF (students echo)
➔ Ask why we sang those particular pitches
➔ Now onto fine tuning
➔ EMPHASIZE important not to go too far ABOVE PITCH-bridge and strings can snap
➔ best way to learn: experiment!
➔ Find A on tuning fork
➔ Tune A string:
◆ play or pluck with one hand
◆ move dial slowly on fine tuner with the other
➔ Take out tuning app if necessary
➔ REPEAT with other strings
➔ Compare to the A string
➔ Transfer this: fine tuning before you play!
TRANSITION WITH: Now your string instruments are tuned for the next lessons!
