Master Programme in Economics 120 credits

The Master Programme in Economics provides you with a solid basis in economic theory, statistics and econometrics and gives you very good skills in analyzing empirical data and evaluating public policy. The Department of Economics at Uppsala University is, by international standards, very strong in the areas of public economics, labor economics and applied microeconometrics.
The department is closely connected scientifically and geographically to the Institute for Labor Market Policy Evaluation (IFAU) and cooperates with IFAU in certain courses within the program. Content First semester The first semester consists of compulsory courses in micro- and macro theory and analytical methods. Each course consists of 7.5 credits and is a part-time course. During the first part of the semester, the courses to be taken in parallel are Microeconomic Theory and Analytical Methods. Microeconomic Theory is an advanced micro course which gives you a more profound knowledge of consumption and production theory and general equilibrium analysis, among other things. Analytical Methods consists of two parts, mathematical analysis and game theory. The mathematical analysis aims at providing you with the necessary mathematical background for more advanced studies in microeconomics and econometrics. Second semester The second semester is devoted to courses in statistics, econometric theory and applied econometrics. Each course amounts to 7.5 credits and is a full-time course. The first two courses of this semester, Probability Theory and Inference and Econometrics, are provided by the The second part will introduce you to the basic game theoretical concepts. The courses taken in parallel in the second part of the semester are Topics in Microeconomics and Macroeconomic Theory. Topics in Microeconomics is an applied course where microeconomic theory is applied to different kinds of economic issues. The course Macroeconomic Theory gives an introduction to modern advanced macroeconomics and deals with subjects like economic growth, business cycles, consumption, investment, unemployment and macroeconomic policy.

Department of Statistics. Probability Theory and Inference is a basic course in probability calculus and theory of inference. Econometrics is a basic course in econometrics with an emphasis on crosssectional and panel data analysis. The third course of this semester is Time Series Analysis, which is given by the Department of Statistics. Time Series Analysis is a basic course in econometrics with an emphasis on time-series analysis. The last course in the second semester is Applied Econometrics which is given by the Department of Economics. The course includes a great deal of hands-on exercises in applied econometrics. Third semester The aim of the courses of the third semester is to broaden the knowledge attained during the first two semesters. You can choose from a number of more applied courses at the department. The department offers the following elective courses: Financial Theory, Applied Macroeconomics, Policy Evaluation, Political Economics and Labor Economics. You are encouraged to also take courses in other subjects, such as political science and mathematics, during this semester. Fourth semester The fourth semester is devoted to writing a thesis worth 30 credits.

Instruction The education is given on a scientific basis and is anchored in research. You will gradually acquire professionally relevant and research-based knowledge and skills. The progression in the programme is to lead on to a higher degree of intellectual maturity and greater insights into the more complex issues within the subject. This, together with the ability to independently formulate and solve problems will prepare you for the final degree project (thesis). The programme presupposes that you have taken methodology courses previ-

ously, covering basic quantitative methods. The master thesis course presupposes knowledge of quantitative skills at the advanced level. The instruction is given in English. Degree The programme leads to a Master of Social Science (120 credits), with Economics as the main field of study. The formal requirements for a degree are: 30 credits in economics on advanced level; 30 credits on advanced level in any subject; 30 credits on any level in any subject and 30 credits thesis.

Career Prospects The Master Programme in Economics is good preparation for skilled analytical and investigational work in economics at:

public authorities and in public


administration,

at research institutes, banks and other financial firms, Swedish and international
organizations,

large firms etc. It also provides the prerequisites for


applying to the graduate program in economics.

Application The programme starts only once a year, in the Autumn. The application deadline is January 15, 2011. Application will be online through the national website www.studera.nu. Fees and Scholarships There is a tuition fee and application fee for students who are not citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland. For these students the tuition fee for this programme is SEK 90 000 per academic year. The fee for application to Swedish universities is SEK 900. Uppsala University offers a few scholarships to cover the tuition fee, see www.uu.se/education. The Swedish

Institute also administers scholarships, www.studyinsweden.se/scholarships. Eligibility Bachelor degree equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (3 years full time studies), of which at least 90 credits should be in economics and 15 credits should be in statistics. All applicants need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS. Selection Selection is based on the degree of success in previous studies, particularly in Economics and Statistics.

Credit System The academic year in Sweden is divided into two semsters. 30 credits represent one semester of full-time studies, covering 20 weeks.
