APPRENTICESHIP PERIOD IN NURSING

Narrator:
In the 11th century. A minister named Theodor Fliedner and his wife, create a movement of building
an institution for the sick and poor from the experiences of their career thinking that hospitals
might be best served by a specially trained woman.
(Entrance of the couple)
Because of that, the couple established the Kaiserwerth institute, a training school for nurses in
Germany.

Husband:
My darling…. in my success and opportunities as an apostle, and observing the life of prisoners.
My interest in the poor and sick has driven me to pursue the significance of the life of people.

Wife:
“Sigh” It is indeed a great opportunity for people to have a better service in health to our
fellowmen. Rich or poor……sinful or innocent people…..everybody is deserved to be treated
equally.

Husband:
I agree….for the past experiences as observant of the prisoners, I saw suffering where people are
huddled together in dirty rooms, badly fed, and left in complete idleness. And it is a good thing that
this institution is a good start for the development of giving health care services to people.
(eye contact, then smile and walk to exit after)

Narrator:
Because of that, this was called the period of on-the-job training. Nursing care was performed
without any formal education, and by people who were directed by more experienced nurse.
religious orders of the church were responsible for the development of this kind of nursing….In this
period, a three woman became an important part of the nursing patronage.

(Entrance of St. Claire)

A woman named Claire of Assisi was born into a wealthy Italian family but soon shun her look
serious upbringing to embrace the life of fighting in poverty.
(Entrance of St. Elizabeth)
Elizabeth of Hungary, known as the patroness of nurses. She was the daughter of the Hungarian
King. She lived her life frigid despite her wealth. She used all her wealth to make the life of the
poor happy and peaceful. She built hospitals for the sick and the needy.
(Entrance of St. Catherine)
Catherine of Siena, also known as the first lady with the lamp. She was a hospital nurse,
prophetess, researcher, and a former society in the church.

Narrator:
(Smile, and taking and do greetings to each other)
In year 1611, the three ladies interned in institution, an institution that teaches and mold them into
their chosen profession. An institution that developed their love in serving other people, especially
those in needs and suffers from various illnesses. …(read slow) An institution that completes their
entire lives.

St. Claire:
Hello, nice to meet you both, I am Claire…

St. Elizabeth:
Nice to meet you Claire, My name is Elizabeth

St Catherine:
And I am Catherine, nice to meet you both!

(madre entrance)
Nun:
Good morning, ladies, take a seat…..(extra movements na kabog)
To be a nurse include a strong sense of responsibility and the highest standards of integrity.
Remember that you ladies…must have a better understanding and experience in care
management, quality improvement methods, systems-level change management, and the
reconceptualized roles of nurses in a reformed healthcare system.

Narrator:
Because of that, they were trained in health promotion, disease prevention, risk reduction, and
health restoration. Later on, the ladies build a health system that builds communities of healing
and hope by compassionate responding to human needs in the spirit of God.

(saints should act here like you do a speech or ted talk)

(look at the audience)
St. Claire:
To my countrymen!

St. Elizabeth:
To our beautiful young children!

St Catherine:
And to all people in this world!

St. Claire:

Some of us are born to privilege. Some are born to deprivation. Some of us have big ambitions,
big dreams. Some just dream of making it through the day, a matter of survival!

St. Elizabeth:

But the one hope we all share is to live a healthy life.

Health should not be the prize you win for climbing to the top of the pile.
It should be the gift we’re all given; the gift that enables us to realize our dreams and fulfill our
potential!

St Catherine:

And primary health care is the foundation of better health.

We must focus on promoting health and preventing disease, as well as treating it. Remember that,
we must empower ourselves to become active participants in our own health!

(exit)
Later on, as they died, they were canonized and considered saints because of their sacrifices that
show their genuine love for the nursing profession, and also their love and faithfulness to serving
the poor.
(Entrance of the poor patient giving flowers to the saints’ tombs and agparintumeng after…)
Their contribution to the nursing profession and charitable, compassionate, and altruistic
character. Helped many people, especially the poor changed their lives.

This is where the story ends of the period of on-the-job training……of nurses….
