For Number 13.

Negros Occidental is the fourth largest island of the Philippines which has an agricultural-based economy. It is
also popularly known as the sugar capital of the country. More than half of its available agricultural land. In the lowlands
is devoted to sugarcane cultivation. Aside from sugarcane, the province also braces its economy on com and rice
production. However, recently the agricultural industry in the province has been greatly affected due to the infestations of
armyworms (locally known as “tagustos").
According to Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan, as mentioned by Nemes (2010) in his article, thirteen
(13) towns and cities in Negros Occidental have been infested by army worms. Tabianan reported
that as of July 29, 2010, the worms had infested 10 hectares of rice in Barangay Blumentritt and Talotog in Murcia, 2,500
square meters of rice in Candoni town, 2.3 hectares of com and sugarcane plantations in Kabankalan City, two hectares
of sugarcane and 38 hectares of corn in Hacienda Fe and Barangay Langub in Escalante City and 28 hectares of
sugarcane plantation in Silay City.
The data only show that armyworms infestations of several hectares of rice and com, including sugarcane in the
province have reached alarming proportions and this problem should be addressed as early as possible to prevent
thearmyworms from spreading to neighboring farmlands.
Since the provincial government has been putting measures in place to turn Negros into organic food island, the
local farmers are encouraged to come up with organic pest management program. This motivated the researchers to look
for a natural method of combating the armyworms. Among which is the potential use of fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae
and Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) as bio-control control agents.
Metarhizium anisopliae is a fungus that grows naturally in soils throughout the world and causes diseases in
various insects by acting as parasite; it thus belongs to the entomopathogenic fungi. It is known to infect over 200 insect
species, including termites. Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), on the other hand,
is a cluster of virus particles which are embedded within polyhedral inclusion bodies (crystals) that develop inside the
nucleus or cytoplasm of infected cells (Hoffmannand Frodsham, (1993)?
Since extensive use of chemicals can cause environmental hazards and induce resistance, biological control
agents such as M. anisopliae and NPV could be a promising alternative to eradicate armyworms.
