AL Chapter 2

This document discusses an assessment given as part of a teacher education program. It provides examples of different types of assessment scenarios and has students identify the purpose of each assessment. The types of assessments discussed include placement, formative, diagnostic, and summative assessments. Students are asked to analyze scenarios and determine which type of assessment is being used based on how the assessment information and results are applied. They are also asked to provide explanations for their answers. Sample assessment scenarios focus on topics like standardized testing, teacher feedback on student work, unit tests, and regular progress monitoring.

Select from the options below. Write a short explanation why it is so.

a) Assessment as selection or placement (Placement assessment)

b) Assessment as instruction and providing feedback (Formative)
c) Assessment as determining what learners need to learn next
d) Assessment as diagnosing learners difficulties and misconceptions ( Diagnostic)
e) Assessment as determining progress along a developmental continuum (Interim)
f) Assessment as evaluation or accountability (Summative)

1. A twelve year old out of school youth who stop during the fourth grade took a test given by the
department of Education to go back to formal schooling. The test determines the grade or year level

Concept Map shows:

The relations among the three assessments are to assess students

learning performance in form of tests. Assessment will help teacher identifying
concepts that students struggling to understand and to identify gaps in learning
process.

First, early assessment is to assess student’s readiness. Knowing of what

level of readiness are the students before entering college level or of the
kindergarten pupils readiness of enrolling in primary grade. After the early
assessment, formative instruction assessment follows to measure and monitor
students learning to provide on-going feedback during or after the lesson. Next is
the summative assessment which will be conducted in form of exam or test
quarterly to evaluate of what the students learn. All of these are types of
assessment with different time of implementation.
B. Meme

 Placement assessment
Kahit

Kahit anong

makapasok ulit

The meme shows on the placement assessment which students praying and hoping of what
grade they should be placed. It is used to determine of what performance level are they.

 Diagnostic assessment
Oh dear, in what “How does one bag
problem did you find
of nails is heavier
difficult?
than 3 bags of
cotton?”

The meme shows that the learners ha a difficulty of understanding the lesson
and that’s the way the diagnostic assessment will come in.

 Formative Assessment

It shows that during the instructions of online class, there is a difficulties expperience by
the students that will lead them to fail of passing their activities and some are dropping their classes.
The formative assessment will assess students about their situations during this new normal education.

 Summative Assessment

Pass…
My exam pass…pass

It shows here that the summative assessment result of the student is about 84%. It
means that he able to pass the exam. The learning outcome is good.

TASK 1: ASSESSMENT SCENARIOS

Determine the role of assessment in the given scenario. Was assessment used for placement,
formative, diagnostic or summative purposes? How was the information used? Explain you answer.

1. A group of Science teachers analyzed the results of the national achievement tests given to
Grade 6 pupils. Most of their students obtained low scores in science. They learned further that their
students had difficulty with items about physical and chemical changes, forms and uses of energy, and
motion. They thought of a professional development project that focuses on introducing pedagogical
innovations particularly in teaching the said topics. After two years, they saw a material improvement in
the performance of their students in the national test, particularly on Science items about forms of
matter, energy and motion.
 This scenario shows the role of assessment is summative assessment when they
conducted the achievement test for grade 6 pupils and they found out the students
have difficulties in the items of some topics and obtain a low score on it. For this
evaluation, the group of science teachers thought of a professional development project
that the teaching focus on the said topic introducing the pedagogical innovations.

2. For the entire session, a Social studies teacher emphasized the importance of human rights in
nation building. Towards the end of the period, he handed each student a piece of paper and posed a
question: “What happens if human rights violations go unchecked?” The teacher made use of the “exit
ticket” strategy to see what students have learned them to the teacher at the end of the period upon
leaving. After reading his students’ responses, he starts planning for the next session.

 It shows the formative assessment when the teacher gave a posed question after the
discussion in social studies emphasized the importance of human rights in nation
building. After reading the student’s responses the teacher knows plan for the next
session.

3. Ms. Jimenez suspected that one of her pupils has limited reading skills. To help the learner,
she needed to identify the specific areas with which the child struggles. Is the child impaired in one or
more of the following components: phonemic awareness, phonic, fluency, vocabulary and compression?
To answer her question, she gave the learner an assessment. Upon ascertaining that the child has
difficulty in phonics, the teacher thought of using an analogic approach to teach phonics.

 Diagnostic assessment is shown in this scenario, when Miss Jimenez assesses and
identifies the specific areas where one of her pupils struggles with limited reading skills.
After of her assessment, she identified child’s difficulty in phonics and she thought of
using an analogic approach to teach phonics.

4. Every month, teachers in a private high school give an interim Math test to check on student
progress. Any student who obtains a core below the cut of core 75 is invited to attend a special class for
additional instruction. However, if the student obtains a ‘fall’ score in two or more occasions, the
student is enjoined to attend the special test.

1
 Summative assessment is shown on this scenario when the private school gave an
interim test every month. Based on the results, the students who obtain 75 score below
the cut is envited to attain a special for additional intructions and for those obtain a fall
score in two or more occations, student is enjoin to attend the special test.
