---_. - FOR Gas Turbine .-__-_., .----~~ _.~. ~_~
B. Eith<:r the load equipment or the turbine and base assembly may
be irstalled f.irst at the descretion of the installation siper-
visor. With the load equipment and turbine setting on initial
shim packs (held in a level pl.ane within .003" per foot) ~'2nter
all i:quipment, and set initial flange to flange coupling dinen-
SlOTI!, . If the load equipment is a base mounted gear and
genel, ator combination, it is suggested that the gear and
generator be installed first; as a generator and gear internal
aligrment can be drastically affected by base shimming where
tile 83s turbine internal alignment is less sensitive to base
to foundation shim changes.

C. When skidding turbine or load equipment base tranversely to

refine external horizontal alignment it will be necessary Cc,
position dial indicators along base I-beam to insure that base !
is moled as rigid bod,q to prevent longitudinal bowing due to
*~-+
base Ilexi:lility.

D. Base acking bolts should be used for refining aligr.me:,-; o,c,l-,

wi .t.h 030" max'lmum vertical lift deemed the acceptable maximurr:
at an' one lif~t point.

E. Installation of ~the load equipment should be governed by any

specific instructions issued by the manufacturer of the equip-
ment involved.
I
~ F. When the load equipment is a base mounted package similar to
the gas turbine the support contact should be firm at all sole
plates under both packages, except the turlbine support pad
located uncer the lube oil cocler. (Continued on following

F. (Continued) During the manufacture of the turbine base, it is
the practice to weld in the lube oil cooler after the base has
been finished machined. The result of this is an ,upward dis-
tortion of the base support pad under the cooler area. This
movement varies with the cooler arrangement; dual coolers
causing as much as .130 upward motion.
In view of this, during assembly of the turbine and base to its
foundatibn, this pad should be ignored and alignment made using
the other nine pads. When near alignment is reached, this pad
should be shim packed to firm contact.
Under no circumstances is the base to be pulled down to meet
the shimming under this pad as this will distort th: accesso~~~
gear mounting and cause misalignment of the gear to turbine,
I
which if corrected, will result in excessive turbine moves.

G. When the load equipment is a gear and generator combination,

check and adjust the alignment of these parts per the appro-
priate generator-to-gear alignment procedure as called f,r on
--
the model list and construction print list.

Ii . If the load equipment is a comprtssor or a similar presswized

appar, atus, the cold alignment positioning detailed in th:s in-
struction may n,zt take into account the affect of the pr<?ssuri-
zation of such equipment. Due to this, the installation super-
visor should' request the equipment manufacturer's represc?ntativt
;: I to conduct an on-the-site test to determine movements due? to
pressurizatidn. The cold positioning called for on this
instruction should then be adjust.ed as required to compensate
for any pressurization movement determined.

J. With base setting on foundation and after initial on-base and
turbine to load alignment checks have been made, the installa-
tion, supervisor should at this time be sure that the final
alignment can be accomplished and still maintain clearance
between foundation hold-down bolts and the base pad bolt holes.
The base hold downs should then be slugged down tight and then
backed off to agree x&tb,foundation bolting arrangement.

K. After final alignment has been accomplished the base to

foundation gib should be set. The two halves of spherical
washers should be tacked together to prevent any el,:vation
change due to a rolling motion between shim halves ind the
anchor nut tz shim clearance be set pe,r the foundation bolting
arrangement.

NOTE : CAUTION
In checking and trimming alignment, no piping is to be
disconnected unless MGTD Engineering approves it prior
to disassembly.
INSTRUCTIONS & DATA, ALIGN - FIELD
?~~~?~~FfRS~ IdAnE
FORGasTurbine’ -,
El ISION
GENERAL - COMPONENTS TO BASE
A. Initial positioning If base-mounted equipment may I>e made by
aligning the centerlines, as scribed on the ends of the base,
to a line as struck from the centerlines of the foundation
hold down bolting.

B. Place a jack under the bottom vertical centerline of the tur-

bine at the turbine shell to exhaust hood vertical flange and
raise turbine to allow removal of gib support pin installed -
for shipping.

C. With the unit on three-point support, as above, check the

variation in gap between the bottom of the turbine support
legs and the top of the base. Using the shims that are pro-
vided at these points, distribute them so that, when installed,
the gap variation from leg to leg does not exceed .0015".
Do not add or remove shims at this time.
(2.1 Set the unit on its own supports and bolt down.

D. After initial rim and face readings have been taken at the
accessory and output end of the gas turbine it may be necessary
to refine the shims at the compressor support plate and the
turbine support legs. It may also be necessary to redowel the
compressor support plate to the gas turbine and if so a loca-
tion will have been provided.

E. Check and refine the alignment of the turbine and components --

on the base, per appropriate alignment instructions (Bolting 6 _-.--
Doweling, IJnit) as called for on the construction print list.
Adjust gibs and redowel as necessary.
~__
When checking this alignment, bear in mind that the base :*?il
/!
not be supported exactly asit was when aligned in the factory.
'Therefore, minor misalignment changes amy be made by adjusting 1
the shims at the forward base pads under the accessory compart- i
ment. Any change at these points should be restricted to a
.OZO" maximum deviation, from the initial true plane of support. 1

When the gas turbine is coupled to an accessory gear, the gear /

will have been used as the fixed point in the initial set-zing ~
of equipment on the base. Therefore, :If ali~gnment rei.ine::;en.l ,-
to the accessory gear is required at any shaft, do not move !
/
the gear unless absolutely necessary. This should be acc:;~-
/
plished by moving either the gas turbine or the other attac::I
equipment as lwquired. I&SE people will still move the act, ,
gear and starting means in many instances.

+
When an ,accesso~y gear is not included in the equipment, hi-he
gas turbine will have been used as the fixed point in ini.!:ial
settings. Therefore, alignment refinement, if required, :,noi:
be made by moving the connected equipment rather than the gas
turbine.

If the starting equipment has not been used for factory ti-T;t,
it will have been aligned but not doweled before shipment.

Al~ignment positioning, as called for, is based on calculated

operational gl,owths from the top of the foundation. Abnormal
movements of 1:he foundation should be compensated for when
they are know1 to exist.

GRAPHIC SYMBOLS
FOR
FLUID POWER DIAGRAMS

1. INTRCDUCTION

Graphic symbols are used in diagrams of fluid power and

other hydraulic systems to emphasize the function and the method
of operation of the various component devices. The symbols are
simple graphic representations of the devices and, when the
reader has acquainted himself with the meaning of the basic sym-
bols, they cross language barriers and help to promote a universal
understanding of fluid power systems.
The basic symbols serve as building blocks to form a
complete graphic symbol which gives symbolic representation of a
component and all its features that 'are pertinent to a circuit
diagram.
These complete symbols may be stylized to form simplified
graphic symbols for representing commonly used components. The
complete or simplified symbols may then be organized to form
a composite graphic symbol for representing a complex component
in a fluid power system.
The graphic symbols shown in this bulletin are used in con-
junction with other symbology on fluid power and hydraulic system
diagrams of General Electric gas turbines: The symbols shown
herein have been extracted from American National Standards In-
stitute Graphic Symbols for,Fluid Power Diagrams, Y32.10-1967
with the permission of the publisher, The American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, United Engineering Center, 345 E. 47th
Street New York, N. Y. 10017.

The numbers shown in this booklet refer to the sections of ,:,

USAS Y32.10 from which the information was extracted. Only a
selected group of symbols are shown in this booklet. The reader
may find it desirable to refer to Y32.10 and to ANSI, Fluid
Power Diagrams Y14.17-1966 for additional information.

2. SYMSOL RULES
(See also Section 10.)
2.1 Line Technique
Keep line widths approximately equal. Line width does not
alter meaning of symbols.
2.1.1 Lines Crossin~g
(The intersection is not necessarily at a 90 deg angle.)

2.1.2 Lines Joining

2.2 Basic symbols may be shown any suitable size. Size may be
varied for ~emphasis or clarity. Relative sizes should be
maintained.

2
GEX-28101

2.3 Each symbol is drawn to show normal, at rest or neutral con-

dition of component unless; multiple diagrams are furnished
showing various phases of circuit operation. Show an actuator
symbol for each flow path condition possessed by the component.
2.4 An arrow through a symbol at approximately 45 degrees indicates
that the component can be ~adjuster? or varied.

2.5 An arrow parallel to the short side of a symbol, within the

svmbol, indicates that the component is pressure compensated.

2.6 Rotating shafts are symbolized by an arrow which indicates

direction of rotation (assume arrow on near side of shaft).

10. VALVES
10.1 A basic valve symbol is composed of one or more envelopes with
lines inside the envelope to represent flow paths and flow
conditions between ports. Three symbol systems are used to
represent valve types: single envelope, both finite and infinite
position; multiple envelope, finite position: and multiple
envelope, infinite'position.
10.2 In infinite position single envelope valves, the envelope IS
imagined to move to illustrate how pressure of flow conditions
are controlled as the valve is actuated.
10.3 Multiple envelopes symbolize valves providing more than one
finite flow path option for the fluid. The multiple envelope
moves to represent how flow paths change when the valving element
within the component is shifted to its finite positions.

14
GEK-28101

10.4 Multiple envelope valves capable of infinite positioning between

certain limits are symbolized as in 10.3 above with the addition
of horizontal bars which are drawn parallel to the envelope.
The horizontal bars are the clues to the infinite positioning
function, possessed by the valve, represented.
