Chapter 1 - Introduction Group 4

This research proposal aims to compare the effectiveness of online versus face-to-face learning settings for junior high school students at St. Alexius College from 2019-2021. The researchers seek to determine student preferences between the two learning modes and any differences in academic performance or other impacts. They hope the findings can help improve the learning curriculum and assist students, teachers, and administrators.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

2020 was a year everyone claimed to be theirs. Until it wasn’t.

People were claiming their academic excellences, their successes in life, and all

those triumphs they were going to achieve at the start of the new decade but we

all know that everything went downhill as the COVID-19 pandemic hit rock bottom

and forced everyone to stay home, adjusting to a new type of lifestyle, a kind of

living where everyone was forced to isolate, one that completely voided out the

habits, routines, and activities we all devised and got used to doing on a daily.

At the start of the lockdown, everyone was productive. Doing all

these online events that gave them entertainment in the supposed 2-week

quarantine that ended up being longer than expected. Everyone started to get

burnt out and eventually brought that burn out into the start of online work and

classes. Everyone, including students, were getting burnt out in all aspects,

affecting their social behavior, mental health, and their performance in work and

school. Suddenly transitioning into this new, unfamiliar environment and

educational approach that is divergent from the accustomed face to face classes

in a light environment with similarly hopeful people, students became stupefied

and had a hard time adjusting to the new normal setting. Students are still

experimenting with the new schedules and systems, on how to manage their time,

as these days there is only a thin, invisible line that separates their school and

personal life.

As grade-conscious as Filipinos can be (considering the importance

of education in the culture), students are still striving to maintain or gain high

grades whilst some have lost the energy and interest to enter because of various

reasons— that includes the new appointed approach to education made by the

system.

Background of the Study

The purpose of this research is to identify which is the more effective mode

of learning, be it face to face classes or online classes. Most of the research to

date has focused on courses offered entirely online. Yet, an increasing number of

face-to-face courses are beginning to incorporate some online components, in

which traditional in-class activities are supplemented, rather than replaced, with

online activities (Ituma, 2011). However, very little is known how students respond

to this kind of “blended e-learning,” especially when they have enrolled in a face-

to-face class, rather than one which they expect in advance to be completed

online. This represents a substantial gap in the educational literature, as there are

potentially important implications for student engagement, performance, and

attrition.

The main goal of the teaching-learning process is to make sure that every

learner achieves the competencies required in the curriculum. At the present time,

where students are not allowed to go out and go to school, a new challenge has

arisen. There is a great struggle in terms of maintaining the effectiveness of online

learning. Davies and Graff (2005) found that students who interacted and

participated more in online discussion did not show significantly better academic

performance than students who were less involved in that discussion. In contrast,

Evans et al. (2004) showed that students performed much better when their online

course material was accessible via an interactive, navigable format than via a

series of scrollable web-pages. Thus, there is mixed evidence about the extent to

which some online activities might help or hinder students' marks, compared to

more traditional, face-to-face classes.

Therefore, the researchers decided to conduct research to identify the

views of the students on which is more effective as a mode of learning.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to identify the impact of online classes & face to face

classes in the academic performances, healthy habits, and life skills of pupils of

St. Alexius College.

Specifically, this ought to answer the following:

1. What are the demographic differences of the students? And do

these differences affect their education?
2. How many students prefer online classes and face to face classes?
3. Why do you prefer the mode of learning you chose in the first
question?
4. Are there any significant differences in the academic performances
of students?

Significance of the Study

Jose Rizal said, “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan,” so with this study,

we are hoping to make society realize and actually listen to their own words

because how will the so-called hope of the country actually let us rise if they do

not prioritize education? Education is one of the most important factors in our

society because it is essential for success, that is why the government should pay

attention and actually conduct a more effective curriculum for the online classes

that students could easily adapt without affecting their well-being. Studying must

be prioritized by everyone because if not, that indirectly means we are not

prioritizing the growth of our country.

This research could help improve the learning curriculum by comparing the

efficiency of face-to-face classes from online learning. This study is beneficial for

the students, the teachers, the community, and the school administrators. The

study is also important for the parents and the family of the students so that they

would know that their behavior at home may also affect the academic

performance of their child. This study aims to contribute to society by giving

suggestions and opinions on different teaching skills from the students’

perspective.

This study will give benefit to the following:

Community

The study will help the community realize the importance of having an

efficient studying curriculum. This will also help the community define the certain

differences of face-to-face classes from online learning.

Students

This study will help the students to manage and adapt to online learning.

This will also help them share their thoughts and experiences in online learning by

answering the survey sheet and this would help them compare their experiences

with other learners as well.

Teachers

With this study, the teachers will be able to know the students’ point-of-

view. This study will help them realize how they affect the students’ mentally and

this will help them to develop new teaching skills that would make it easier for the

students to comprehend the lessons.

School Administrators

The data from the study could be useful for the school administrators

because they can consider it in terms of decision making. They can also use the

data to help them in expanding their online class approach that would be

manageable towards the students.

Parents

This study will give parents the information and data that they need about

the effectiveness of the different modes of learning. This will also give them

knowledge about what their children are dealing with in online classes and this will

make them realize how their behavior at home affects their children’s academic

performance.

Researchers

They can use the research findings as enrichment to examine to what

extent students should be provided with help in terms of internet facilities, and to

what extent they should rely on other means to develop their strategies and

resourcefulness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will be conducted in Junior High Schools in Koronadal City. The

purpose of the study is to determine the significant differences in the effectiveness

of the different modes of learning. The respondents of the study will be the Junior

High School students of St. Alexius College Integrated School Department. The

research design that will be used is the Quantitative-Descriptive Research Design.

The researchers will use self-made questionnaires; the statistical tools that will be

used are frequency distribution, percentage, standard deviation, and Chi-square

test.
