Lesson 1.1
Determining the Conditions that Make a Quadrilateral a
Parallelogram

What’s In

In Grade 7 Math, you learned that a quadrilateral is a closed plane figure consisting of
four line segments or sides. Quadrilaterals can be named by its vertices, read consecutively
or successively.

The quadrilateral drawn above can be named ABCD. It can be also be named as BCDA
or CDAB or DABC but cannot be named as ACBD or BDAC.

A and D are consecutive vertices, while A and C are opposite vertices.

̅̅̅̅ and 𝐵𝐶
𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ are sides with a common vertex, thus called consecutive sides,
otherwise ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 and ̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐶 are opposite sides.
∠A and ∠B are two angles with a common side, thus called consecutive angles,
otherwise ∠A and ∠C are called opposite angles.
The segments joining two nonconsecutive vertices is called diagonals. In the
figure, the diagonals are ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐶 and ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐷 .

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of opposite sides that are parallel.

This lesson will help us determine the conditions that make a quadrilateral a parallelogram.

6
Lesson 1.2
Using Properties to find the Measure of Angles Involving
Parallelograms

What’s In

To recall, a parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of opposite sides that are
parallel. The symbol of the parallelogram is the drawing of a small parallelogram

In lesson 18.1, you have learned that opposite angles of a

parallelogram are congruent. Thus, in parallelogram ABCD,

∠𝐴 ≅ ∠𝐶 and ∠𝐵 ≅ ∠𝐷 . Furthermore, you also learned that the

consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary. So, in
parallelogram ABCD, 𝑚 ∠𝐴 + 𝑚∠𝐵 = 180°, 𝑚 ∠𝐵 + 𝑚∠𝐶 = 180°, 𝑚 ∠𝐶 +
𝑚∠𝐷 = 180° and 𝑚 ∠𝐴 + 𝑚∠𝐷 = 180°

In this lesson, you will be able to use these properties to find the measure of angles
involving parallelograms.

What’s New
Determine if each quadrilateral is a parallelogram. Write T if correct, otherwise write F.
_____1. _____2.

_______3. ______4.

Answer the following questions?

1. Which of the following quadrilaterals is a parallelogram? Why do you say so?
2. Are the quadrilaterals you chose show that opposite angles are congruent?
3. Are the consecutive angles of those parallelograms supplementary?

What Is It
From the activity, we can say that Quadrilateral EFGH (figure 1) is a parallelogram,
because its opposite sides are congruent, ∠E≅ ∠G and ∠F≅ ∠H. Moreover, given the
measure of ∠E = 70° and ∠𝐹 = 110°, when we add the measure of these consecutive angles,
its sum is 180°. Figures 2 and 3 are not parallelograms because none of those conditions are
met.

7
Applying these properties, let us determine the measure of the remaining angles of a
parallelogram. Let us take a look of the following examples.
(*note: figures are not drawn to scale)

Illustrative Example #1.

Given: Parallelogram WXYZ where m∠𝑍 = 105°
Find: m∠𝑋, 𝑚∠𝑊, 𝑚∠𝑌

Answer:
●Since ∠𝑋 is the opposite angle of ∠𝑍, therefore, m∠𝑍 = 105°

●∠𝑌 is a consecutive angle of ∠𝑍,

So, m∠𝑌 + m∠𝑍 = 180°
m∠𝑌 + 105° = 180° By Substitution Property
- 105° = - 105° By Subtraction Property of Equality
m∠𝑌 = 180° - 105°
m∠𝑌 = 75°

● ∠𝑊 is an opposite angle of ∠𝑌, therefore ∠𝑊 ≅ ∠𝑌, so m∠𝑊 = 75°

Illustrative Example #2:
Find the value of the variable then determine the
measure of the angles of parallelogram ABCD.
Given: 𝑚∠𝐴 = 72°
Solution:
● ∠𝐴 ≅ ∠𝐷 Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.
Therefore,
m∠𝐷 = 72°
●m∠𝐷 = 72°
3y = 72° By Substitution Property
3 = 3 By Division Property of Equality
y = 24°
● m ∠𝐴 + m ∠𝐶 = 180° Consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary
72° + x = 180° By Substitution Property
-72° = -72° By Subtraction Property of Equality
x = 180° – 72°
x = 108°
● ∠𝐶 = x By Substitution Property
m ∠𝐶 = 108°
●∠𝐶 ≅ ∠𝐵 Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.
Therefore,
m∠𝐵 = 108°

8
What’s More

Refer to the given figure at the right and answer the following.
Given: ABCD is a parallelogram.
Find:
2.1 ∠𝐴 ≅ _____
2.2 ∠𝐵 ≅ _____
2.3 If m∠𝐴 = 85°, then m∠𝐶 = _________

2.4 If m∠𝐴 = 85°, then m∠𝐵 = _________

2.5 Given: ∠𝐴 = x + 20 and ∠𝐶 = 3x – 40
Find:
a. What is the value of x? _________
b. What is m∠𝐴?_________
c. What is m∠𝐵_______
d. What is m∠𝐶_______
e. What is m∠𝐷_______

What I have learned

Let us check what you have learned in this lesson by completing each
statement to make the best geometric sense. (One word per blank)
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with (1. )_________ pairs of opposite sides that are
parallel. Opposite angles of a parallelogram are (2. )____________.
(3. )_________angles of a parallelogram are supplementary.

Lesson 1.3
Using Properties to Find the Measure of Sides and Other
Quantities Involving Parallelograms.

What’s In

In lesson 18.1, you have learned that the opposite sides of a

parallelogram are congruent. Thus, in parallelogram ABCD, ̅̅̅̅̅𝐴𝐵 ≅ ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐶
̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅
and 𝐴𝐷 ≅ 𝐵𝐶 . Another property you have learned is that diagonals
bisect each other. From the figure at the right, ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐸 ≅ ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐶 and ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐸 ≅
̅̅̅̅̅. The diagonals of the parallelogram also divide the parallelogram
𝐵𝐸
into two congruent triangles. Thus, ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 ≅ ∆𝐴𝐷𝐶 or ∆𝐷𝐴𝐵 ≅ ∆𝐷𝐶𝐵.

Now, your task in this lesson is to apply these properties to

find the measure of the sides, diagonals, and other quantities of a
parallelogram.

9
What’s New
Determine what property of parallelogram is used in the following figures. The
choices are written below. Write only the letter of your choice.
A. Opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent.
B. Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.
C. Consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary.
D. Diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other.
E. A diagonal of a parallelogram forms two congruent triangles.

_____1. _______2.

______3.

Answer the following questions.

1. What can you say about the opposite sides of a parallelogram?
2. What does each diagonal do to a parallelogram?
3. What can be concluded to the two triangles formed when a diagonal is drawn in a
parallelogram?

What Is It
In your activity, you were able to determine the properties of parallelogram involving
its sides, diagonals and other quantities. Let us now use these properties to find the measure
of these parts. Study the following examples to further your understanding of this lesson.
(*Note: figures are not drawn to scale)

Illustrative Example #1:

Given: 𝑊𝑋𝑌𝑍,

●If WX = 20 cm, then its opposite side ZY is also 20cm.

●If WA = 3cm, then YA = 3cm.
●If ZA = 5cm, then ZX = 10cm

Illustrative Example #2.

Given: 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a parallelogram.

Find the value of the variable x,

then identify the measure of the sides BC and AD.

10
Step 1:
find x:
BC = AD Opposite sides of the parallelogram are congruent.
x + 14 = 3x By substitution
-x = -x By Subtraction Property of Equality
14 = 3x – x
14 2𝑥
= By Division Property of Equality
2 2
7=x

Step 2:
Substitute the value of x to the given.
BC = x + 14 AD = 3x
BC = 7 + 14 AD = 3(7)
BC = 21 AD = 21

Therefore, BC and AD both measures 21 units.

What I can do

Amazing Quadrilatable!
Goal: To design and create a study table needed for your modular class. Explain why you
have made such a design.
Situation: Covid 19 has challenged many, including the holding of classes of the Department
of Education (DepEd). The learners are unable to attend classes physically due to this time of
crisis. With these, DepEd implemented a “safe back to school program” consisting of health
standards that will ensure everyone’s safety. Distance learning is a major component of
learning delivery for this school year. That’s why, you are working at home with this module at
hand.
With this current situation, there should be a learning space at home for you to work
on. To apply your learnings in this module about quadrilaterals, you are tasked to design and
create a study table (out of recyclable materials if possible) for your modular class. Be sure to
take note of the properties you have just learned.
