INTRODUCTION
Purpose of Research
This investigation focuses on the topic “The Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance
of Grade 11 Students at Herbert Morrison Technical High School”. The increase in social media
usage among students of different age groups has led to an increase in concerns from the
educational system and family heads alike on the effects of social media usage on the academic
performance of their students and children respectively. This research aims to analyze the impact
of social media usage on a student’s academic performance by assessing its negatives and
positives. This will eventually generate a greater understanding of the effects and promote action
Problem Statement
Social media is extremely popular amongst young people as the main method of communication.
They share memes, read tweets, and socialize in every form in every spectrum. To many parents
and senior persons, it is seen as a waste of time and a deterrent to academic success and prowess.
As the Herbert Morrison Technical High School grade 11 students begin to prepare for their
CSEC exams, there is a rise in the need for the use of technology to study, the same technology
the students use to communicate on social media. Teachers have observed a decrease in the
grades of the grade 11 students. In lieu of this fact, the question is: “What is the impact of social
media on the academic performance of grade 11 students at Herbert Morrison Technical High?
Values of the Research
This research focuses on “social media” and its impact on the academic performance of grade
eleven students at HMTHS. The research aims to investigate the relationship between grade 11
students’ academic performance and the time spent on various social media platforms. The data
gained from this investigation will offer clear insight to parents and teachers as to what steps
need to be taken to mitigate the decline in the productivity and academic performance of their
child and student respectively. Additionally, this research seeks to assess the possibility of social
media having a benefit to academic performance, so that teachers can incorporate it into their
teaching.
1. What are the main social media platforms used by young people today?
The impact of social media on the academic performance of grade 11 students is a topic that has
garnered a lot of attention in recent years. While some argue that social media has a negative
impact on students’ grades, others believe that it has little to no effect. In this literature review,
we will examine both sides of the argument, drawing upon a range of sources including journals,
articles, and research papers, and include quotes and data from the authors.
A study published in the Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange found
that social media use can have a negative impact on academic performance. According to
Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), “Frequent Facebook users had lower grade point averages
(GPAs) than infrequent users.” The study found that students who used Facebook for more than
an hour a day had an average GPA of 3.06, while those who used it for less than an hour had an
On the other hand, a research paper by Oberst, Engelberg, and Pentz (2012) published in the
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Research found that the impact of social
media on academic performance is statistically non-significant. The authors state, “The results of
our study suggest that social media use has only a small, non-significant effect on academic
performance.”
An article by Fried and Aricak (2014) published in the Journal of Educational Psychology took a
closer look at the relationship between multitasking and academic performance. The authors
found that while multitasking, including the use of social media, can lead to decreased academic
performance, it can also have positive effects when used in moderation. As the authors explain,
In addition to the debate surrounding the overall impact of social media on academic
performance, there is also discussion about the ways in which social media use can be beneficial
for students. For instance, social media can be a useful tool for students to collaborate and
connect with peers and experts in their field. According to Kirschner and Karpinski (2010),
“Social media can provide opportunities for students to connect with experts in their field and
In conclusion, the impact of social media on the academic performance of grade 11 students is a
complex issue with evidence to support both sides of the argument. While some studies have
found that social media use is associated with lower grades, other research suggests that this
relationship is largely accounted for by other factors. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest
that social media can be a valuable tool for enhancing the academic performance of students,
educators, students, and parents to carefully consider the ways in which social media is used and
