Assisngment Assessment of Learning - Umbina

This document contains an assignment on converting and interpreting various test scores. It provides examples of converting a raw score of 42 out of 50 to a percentage score of 84%, a z-score of 2, a t-score of 70, a stanine score of 9, and a percentile rank of 97.72%. It also asks students to interpret test scores for Susan and two classmates, Raquel and three other students, converting their raw scores to other equivalent scores and providing short interpretations.

ASSIGNMENT: COVERSION AND INTERPRETATION OF SCORES

It is important for any teacher to be able to convert a raw score to a
percentage score, a standard score or a percentile rank, and afterwards
make sensible description of such score.

1. Susan obtained a raw score of 42 out of 50. The mean is 32 and the
standard deviation is 5. Convert the raw score to the following:

a. Percentage Score = 84%

Solution:
Percentage Score = (Raw Score/Total Number of Items
= (42/50) * 100
= 0.84*100
= 84

b. z-score = 2
Solution:
Z = (x-µ)/s
= (42-32)/5
= 10/5
=2

c. T-score = 70
Solution:
T = 10z + 50
= 10(2) + 50
= 20+50
= 70
d. Stanine Score = 9
Solution:
Stanine = 2z+5
= 2(2) + 5
= 4+5
=9

e. Percentile Rank = 97.72% or 98%

Write a short interpretation of Susan’s performance based on the percentile

rank and computed standard scores. Use the space below.

Answer:

It is evident that Susan’s score is better than 97.72% of

students in the sample. We could also notice that her score is in the
upper 2.28% of the norm group. A percentile rank of 97.72 indicates
that Susan scored higher than 49 students, if there were 50 students
who took the test.

2. Raquel obtains a score of 30/50 in her Social Studies test and 24/40 in
her Math test.

Social Studies: x=28; s=4

Mathematics: x=20; s=5

On which test did she do better compared to the rest of the class? Explain
your answer.

Data Interpretation/Tabulation:

Test Raw Percentage Percentile z-score t-score Stanine

Score correct Rank
Social 30 60% 69.15% 0.5 30 6
Studies
Mathematics 24 60% 78.81% 0.8 50 7

Explanation:
In Social Studies, Raquel scored better than 69.15% of students in
the sample. On the other hand, her score is in the30.85% of the
norm group. In Mathematics, Raquel scored better than 78.81% of
students in the sample. In other words, her score is in the upper
21.19% of the norm group. This observation suggests that Raquel is
better in Mathematics compared to the rest of the class.

3. Complete the table by giving the equivalent score. Provide a short

interpretation of the underlined score.
