Syllabus - Introduction To Psychology - Spring 2021
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK
Wade, C. & Tavris, C. Invitation to Psychology. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to Introduction to Psychology! While psychology is most often associated with
clinical and counseling psychology (e.g. therapy; diagnosing mental disorders; etc.), this
makes up only a small portion of the field of psychology. Other specialties within the field
include, to name just a few, cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental
psychology and biological psychology. This course will introduce you to the major
concepts, theories, and research findings from each of these areas, with an emphasis on
how these ideas and findings contribute to our larger understanding of human behavior.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To understand the basic terminology, key concepts, and major theories of
psychology.
To gain familiarity with the research methods psychologists use to investigate
human behavior.
To be able to use psychological concepts and theories to better understand the
thoughts, feelings, and behavior of others, as well as your own.
To understand the interactive influences of biology and environment on thought
and action, and in so doing develop an appreciation for the complexity of human
behavior.
To develop the ability to critically evaluate claims about human behavior found in
the media and popular culture.
To acquire the knowledge and skills needed to take more advanced courses in
psychology.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
PARTICIPATION
Attendance and class participation are essential for success in this course. Whereas the
textbook presents a broad picture of the major topics in social psychology, lectures and in-
class activities will often focus on more specific topics, or different topics altogether.
Although attendance will be taken, this is only for my own personal records. Attendance
by itself will not affect your course grade. However participation contributes 10% towards
your course grade. I will determine your class participation grade at the end of the
semester based on my perception of your level of preparedness for each class session,
your willingness to participate in the discussion, and the perceptiveness of the comments
that you make throughout the duration of this course.
As part of your participation grade, you may be asked to participate in one or more
psychological studies conducted at Marmara. More information on this will be provided in
class.
READINGS
In order for you to gain the most benefit and enjoyment from this course, you are expected
to read the assigned material on time. If you do not keep up with the readings, you will be
unable to fully participate in the classes.
EXAMS
There will be two (including the final exam). The exams will cover assigned readings as
well as material covered in class (i.e. from lectures; videos; group activities; etc.). Each
exam will include multiple choice and short answer questions. Make-up exams will be
given only in the event of a documented (i.e. you must bring me supporting paperwork)
emergency or illness, and you must notify me of such an emergency before the exam. No
exceptions will be made.
GRADING
Your final course grade will POSSIBLY be determined based on this point distribution:
Assignment Percent of Total Grade
Exams 90%
Participation 10%
The following standard grading scale will POSSIBLY be used in the course:
Grade Numerical range Grade Numerical Range
AA 90+ DD 50-54
BA 85-89 FD 45-48
BB 80-84 F 0-44
CB 75-79
CC 65-74
DC 55-64
CLASS POLICIES
Cheating will result in a grade of zero for that exam, and may result in suspension or
expulsion from Marmara. Simply attempting to cheat (e.g. looking at another
student's exam) will result, at a minimum, in a zero on that exam.
No extra credit will be offered in this course at any time.
