Practical Research I
ABSTRACT

This study is undertaken to determine the influence and benefits of senior high school students

fashion on media trends in Ilocos Norte National High School. Specifically, it aimed to determine the

impact of the fashion trends in their daily school lives amidst judgement on their fashion sense, coping

mechanisms of the students regarding on the impacts of fashion, and challenges of the students in effect

to the discriminants criticism, as well as their way to manage the impacts of fashion trends.

The research sampling that was utilized to identify the respondents of the study was convenience

sampling design. Six (6) grade 12 students under the academic track of Ilocos Norte National High

School, Senior High Department (INNHS-SHS) were chosen depending on the qualifications needed in

the study. The semi-structured interview was conducted through classroom visitation.

The researchers determined the perception of students of fashion trends, where most of the

respondents view it as something more relevant to our daily school lives. The study evaluated the

association of fashion trends on the academic performance of the Grade 12 STEM students.

Based on the analysis and results gathered in the study, the researchers therefore concluded that

fashion trends is still a huge factor on the confidence of the Grade 12 students of INNHS. The results

suggest that ignorance on discrimination may promote more self-esteem and uniqueness.

Thus, the researchers recommended that awareness on wearing your own clothes should be

practiced more for the students’ sense of fashion to be called either unique or insensible fashion. In

addition to that, parents should take time to observe their children’s fashion sense.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter will serve as its introductory purpose by defining the background of the study that

will be use throughout this research so as to have a clearer insight of the topic going to be dealt with. It

also gives a description of the statement of the problem of the research, the significance of the study,

and the key terms used in the study.

Background of the Study

Fashion is a popular trend, a way, manner, style, and a system not only for adults but especially for

teenagers. Fashion have become more important to teenagers in their daily lives, they value time on

their clothings rather than their academic performances.

A fashionable trend helps teenagers in their choice of clothings. From television to the internet,

you will see celebrities or social influencers wearing the same clothes as others, thinking it’s a good

fashion sense. The study of the effects of clothing choices on how we perceive and evaluate one

another is known as fashion psychology. The term "fashion psychology" is misleading, though, as the

field looks far beyond how clothing affects a person.

A good fashion is a good moral for them, teenagers craves for good fashion sense. They become

ambitious when it comes to their physical characteristics and sensible in their outfit designs. They wear

flashy or conservative designs but don’t want to be judged.

One of the students of INNHS who always wear fashionable clothes said: “fashion is autonomous

choice for teenagers. It depends on people how they would handle their fashion styles. It is a choice

that cannot be forced”. Surprisingly, students who always wore casual clothings said the same thing,

they valuate their styles and how they look to others. Students wear casual attires to look “fit” and

attractive to others, they said that it’s appealing to look if you wear smart clothings. However, a student

said that while expressing oneself through one's looks is fun and boosts confidence, it also costs

money. Despite the fact that there are ways to cut prices, such as cycling old clothing and shopping at

thrift stores, the majority of fashionable, ethical apparel is typically more expensive.

In the article: The Student-Run News Site of Carnegie Vanguard High School in 2021, According

to a survey of students at CVHS, 82%, appearance is a form of self-expression. The students body is

one of the most diversely dressed in school due to the school's dress code, which merely asks for no

attire that is too tight, revealing, or vulgar. This includes hair colouring and hijabs. Even the school's

clothing code is cited by many students as a motivation for enrolling or continuing. Choosing one's

own style has shown to be quite beneficial for general self-assurance for many students. Even though

people initially found it frightening to dress whichever they wanted to, doing so usually helped them

with their problems, fears, and confidence.

Statement of the problem

Teenagers' lives have become so consumed by fashion that many of them are more preoccupied

with their personal style than their academic performance and house responsibilities. Teenagers today

are so preoccupied with fashion that they don't have time for any other tasks. Instead of focusing on

their studies, they waste time pursuing the latest fashion trends and crowding markets and malls in

search of items of that nature. Nowadays, kids would rather read fashion magazines than textbooks and

make a concerted effort to imitate the models or celebrities in order to look like them. Teenagers these

days are becoming obsessed with fashion to the point that they only think about it throughout the day

and spend the majority of their money and useful time on it rather than studying. Students are unable to

study effectively because they spend a lot of time examining each other's outfits. In schools, fashion

policing frequently results in groups.

A teenager who spends too much time worrying about the newest trends and styles is not only

deviating from the primary goal of a student: studying, but also risking financial consequences.

Consumers try to get nearly all of the newest fashionable goods as a result of maintaining their positive

reputation. However, such a big financial loss places a significant financial burden on the parents.

Relatively, it concerns and aims to answer the following questions:

I. WHAT EFFECTS DOES FASHION HAVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

II. HOW DO INNHS STUDENTS MANAGE THEIR FASHION STYLES?

III. HOW DOES THE FASHION IMPACTS THE INNHS' STUDENTS EMOTIONAL

RESPONSES.
Scope and Delimitations

The scope of the study involves behavioural change. It focuses on the positive and negative effects

of fashion influence. Its focus goes beyond clothing to take into account the effects of numerous other

products that serve as means of self-expression and are affected by the same forces that propel change

in the apparel industry. This study will use Convenience sampling method. The target population in this

study will be on Senior High School Students of Ilocos Norte National High School S.Y 2022-2023.

This study considers every aspects of every student’s personal information that has impact on their

daily school lives. This study had to be done in a time frame of ten (10) school days.

Significance of the study

This study gives them ideas on how this would affect them, they will know how significant this

study could be and how beneficial this is for them, and these include:

Students. They will know that this research would be beneficial to them because they will know

the negative and positive effects of fashion influence.

Teachers. They will have some awareness on how fashion is playing a part for the students’

school life and how important it is for them.

Family members. They will have an idea on how to support their child on their school and how to

encourage them.

Community. They will know the purpose of this study and how beneficial this is on the students’

school life or in general

Future Researchers. They will have an idea and a basis on the related topic
Definition of Terms

This constituent will provide you the necessary information of the terms that have been used in this

study; it will provide you more wide understanding and information of the study. For the readers to

have a more thorough understanding of the research that was conducted,

The researchers defined the following terms based on how they were used in the research study :

Fashion. A set as an ethos, an intrinsic value to society, especially modern, on a level beyond

tactile objects.

Academic performance. The volume to which a students has attained of their brief or long-time

period instructional goals.

Popular Trends: At any given time, the most popular types of clothing and accessories. Micro

trends, like tiny sunglasses and high-wasted denim, come and go in a matter of months to a few years.

System: A term that encompasses both the business and the craft of fashion, as well as its

production and consumption.

Fashionable Trend: A fashion trend happens when a certain item, shape, colour, or new style

becomes increasingly popular. A trend or fad can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as well-

known celebrity outfits, fashion merchandising companies, designer shows, and textile producers.

Physical characteristics: Distinguishes traits or physical characteristics of your body. Knowing

nothing else about the individual, these are characteristics that are immediately noticeable.
Chapter II

REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE (RRL)

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Fashion trend signifies a specific look or expression that is spread across a population at a specific

time and place (Ganpat Maheshwari, 2019). A trend is considered a more ephemeral look, not defined

by the seasons when collections are released by the fashion industry.

Fashion is a form of self-expression and autonomy at a particular period and place and in a specific

context, of clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body posture.

2.2 CONTEMPORARY CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR

Fashion trends come and go; meanwhile a society’s values are established and evolving

characteristic to their beliefs and culture. Fashion is just not an ambitious projected image of a

reinterpreted good old value to fulfill some function or agenda alike but rather an evocative and

refreshing concept worthy enough to be portrayed for society’s appreciation that makes us even more

instinctive (Faizan Shaukat, 2017). In its most common use, the term fashion refers to the current

expressions on sale through the fashion industry. Although the fashion industry developed first in

Europe and America, as of 2017, it is an international and highly globalized industry, with clothing

often designed in one country, manufactured in another, and sold worldwide.

Fast fashion comprises cheaply and rapidly mass-produced clothes that aim to keep up with ever-

changing fashion trends on the high street. Its business model enables consumers to buy a higher

volume of clothes due to their low-cost and for demand to be fed through rapidly changing fashion

lines and ranges. Experiencing rapid growth, the fast fashion industry has boomed in recent years. In

the modern world, it has become critical for many to stay in tune with the ever-changing trends we see

prevalent in our society and media, especially in the world of fashion. In our experience, for example,
we have previously placed importance on keeping ourselves relevant with these trends and staying up

to date. With a higher number of trends emerging and at faster rates than before, the fast fashion

industry has seen a massive shift in advertising and marketing channels, particularly with the rise of

social media and influencers.

In 2015 there were 985 million users of social media. Fast-forward to July 2021 and this number

had passed 4.90 billion. For many consumers, it is hard to imagine a world without social media as it

becomes increasingly ingrained into our lives (Paula Alhola, 2021). Alongside the rise of social media

over the past decade, social media “influencers” have become increasingly popular, with many

companies employing “influencer marketing” as a new channel for advertising their products. When I

scroll through my news feeds on social media, it now seems to be primarily advertisement-based

content, with social media platforms having evolved from posting awkward selfies to money-making

platforms that enable users to monetise their content and create a new class of celebrity. This trend that

I have observed is reflective of a shift in the industry, with 67% of brands now using Instagram for

influencer marketing; a key factor in the industry witnessing growth of $13.8 billion in 2021.

2.3 FACE OF EVERYDAY FASHION

Elevated everyday dressing, high-octane sequins, sheer everything, and anything in between—the

latest collections to come from fashion’s heavy hitters and emerging stars run the full gamut (Paivi

Polo-Kantola, 2018).

All the latest trends in fashion styles, pretty well versed with fashion that is in vogue and fashion

that is liked by all. The new and emerging trends in the fashion industry have become extremely

popular making its way, fashion trends are slowly evolving for good. Whether you are someone who

just likes a touch of the old and the classic or someone who stay ahead with the upcoming trends.

2.4 SOCIAL AGENDA OF FASHION TRENDS

The fashion trends portray a visual culture and style of dressing that models the consumer identity

in a specific environment. The social agenda of these fashion trends is to express the consumer’s

identity in terms of lifestyle choices and their attitude. The lifestyle choices changes from one period to

another period. In other words they suggest the pattern & manner of dressing befitting an occasion that

sets forth a standard. these clothing standards are in fact derived from the prevailing social values and

their emotional expectations.

The Fashion trend entails design focus and details on a garment noticed at different locations of the

garment namely collars and necklines, hem lines, waist lines, shoulder line, sleeve lines and hip lines.

From the user search behavior patterns, it is clearly evident that many fashion trends have bulldozed

the issue of class entirely, and instead follow patterns of “personal identity” dictated by psychographic

parameters based on age, race, gender, sexuality, leisure activities, and various sub-cultural allegiances.

2.5 THE ATTITUDE OF YOUTH TOWARDS FASHION TRENDS

Attitudes serving a value-expressive function help people communicate their central beliefs,

attitudes, and values to others through their possessions. And fashionable garments and accessories are

such possessions that help people communicate who and what they are. The youngsters comprising of

adolescents (12 to 17years), teens and young allocate more time for their public appearance than to

studies. The peer influence, hero worship which becomes part of adolescent identity creation is the

primary reason why adolescents aspire for more fashion concerns than any other age group.

Fashion trend today does not give precedence to comforts and practicality. Sometimes the dress,

that goes beyond modesty and simplicity, which does not allow someone to sit or walk properly, is

attracted by youth. Untidy, shabby looking hair-styles, which are trendy, attract Generation X

youngsters. Rather it reflects the deconstructive style preferences prevailing in post modern

consumerist society (Jalali R, 2020).

2.6 GENERATION Z
Generation X style characteristics can be inferred from a few signature style looks: metro sexual or

grunge characterized by Untidy, shabby looking hair-styles, which are trendy. By far for many

youngsters the prevailing style is jeans, cool sneakers and messy hair for men and jeans, cool sneakers

and neat hair for women (Jalali R, 2020). But Generation Z youngsters who in fact wish to express

their own style in an anonymous manner as per the view shared by the Director of youth insights of

Futures co. Generation Z is also nicknamed Digital natives, just because they can simultaneously

create a document, edit it, post a photo on instagram and talk on phone. We do see a few elements like

rave look, pop art style skirts printed with giant coco cola logo, tie-dyed maxi dresses and rainbow

chokers barring resemblance to Generation X. This is no strange behaviour in the current scenario

given the incidences of “Selfies” as they are quick and efficient way to increase one’s social media

presence.

2.7 COMMUNICATION AND COGNITIVE ENGAGEMENT

Fashion communication, unlike verbal communication, messages transmitted through fashion

symbols are often emotional impressions (Lida Menati, 2020). In other words they reflect the clothing

attitude of the person. The perceiver examines a fashion statement "not for a new message, but for an

old one fixed by convention" Fashion symbols and their effectiveness in communicating culturally

defined Categories. Principles and processes emerged through human interaction not only speaks about

their existence but also their consciousness. The human consciousness in appreciating a cut and shape

of silhouette is as legitimate as any other appreciation of Art. In fashion the evocation of a Trend

pertaining to a historical period has to be immediate yet not necessarily correct in its aspects; visual

impact and easy reading of the design take preference over historical accuracy in material or shape.

Today, Is silk an representation of purity, royalty and does wearing a denim trouser with distressed

effects speak about the emotional traits of the person who he is, can only be explained by the symbols

that establishes the visual core concepts in fashion. Today the manufacturing of fashion clothing has

been affected by technological advances; the abilities of the high-tech fabrics to stretch to over-
whelming sizes or change their structure according to temperatures inspire clothing designers and blur

the lines between fashion and industrial design.

2.8 CONCLUSION

Attitude is an expression of the feelings and values are their motivating forces or directional forces

that help the consumer to make a decision. In case of a value-expressive attitude toward a product, the

consumers are motivated to consume it as a form of self-expression. This growing trend of self

awareness for one’s look has influenced every aspect of Generation Z individual behaviour and is

reflected in every sphere starting from social media platforms to real life purchase decisions. Further

today’s anonymous style trends opens up the societal expressions unheard and unseen ever before just

evocative of the spirit of our moments that does not bother whether the content is worth artistic and

meaningful which could give a hint or two about the individuals real existence and real needs. The

changing fashion trends create a healthy and competitive environment that inspires the next generation

of fashion designers and other related people to work hard and create meaningful and creative new

designs. It creates new employment opportunities for many upcoming students (of fashion studies). The

new and trendy formal fashion designed clothes enhance the look of the wearer and also give him or

her confidence to perform efficiently, especially in an interview. The new fashion trend makes even an

ordinary person into a special person. It gives an identity to the wearer, or else people get unnoticed.

Last but not the least, it is an opportunity to amalgamate different cultures and traditions.

As fashion has become an inseparable part of human society, it plays certain roles in society. It

influences the society and also get influenced by the society. This is unquestionably true that today’s

generations want to be seen as modern people, and since this is the demand of circumstance, there is

nothing wrong with it. But while making oneself modern, if we forget our own ethics and integrity, it is

wrong. Therefore, now it is up to you — what you want to be look like and how you want to shape

your future.
Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research design, participants, and data collection and analysis

procedures used in this study. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a detailed overview of the

research methods used to answer the research questions and to test the hypotheses.

Research Design

This study was intended to find out their perception of the influence and benefits of fashion trends

circulating in media trends to their lives. The goal of qualitative research is to understand and explain

social phenomena from the participants' points of view and to give a rich, in-depth understanding of the

topic under study. It can be especially helpful for studying things like attitudes, beliefs, and values that

are hard to measure or count.

The research design for this study is Phenomenology. Phenomenology was chosen because it

involves describing and interpreting the meaning of these experiences from the perspective of the

individuals who have them. The phenomenological study is a qualitative research technique that tries to

comprehend and characterize a phenomenon's universal core. The method explores people's ordinary

experiences while suspending the researchers' prior notions about the phenomena. In other words,

phenomenology research investigates lived experiences in order to acquire a better understanding of

how individuals interpret such experiences. Phenomenology is suitable for this study to provide a

detailed and nuanced understanding of the lived experiences of individuals, to understand the

subjective meaning and significance of experiences for individuals, and to generate new knowledge and

theories about the subjective experiences of individuals.

Data Gathering

Before beginning the project, the researcher sought permission from the Research Teacher.

Following receipt of the permit, the researcher made appointments to visit the principal's office and

seek consent from the school administration. After identifying the population, choosing the

participants, and determining the optimal data-collecting technology to employ in this study, the

researchers offered their written informed permission to the target respondents. Following the

respondents' confirmation, the researchers conducted an interview, which was completed by the chosen

respondents. The researchers were allocated to certain strands and assisted with completing the

required documents. Respondents answer the interview questions in accordance with the instructions.

 Sampling Procedure

The research used convenience sampling to gather the sample for this study. The

researcher used the availability of the respondents as a general procedure. The respondents were chosen

mainly because of their availability to respond to the interview. In big populations, researchers employ

a variety of sampling strategies. Most of the time, testing the entire community is impossible since they

are difficult to contact. Convenience sampling is used by researchers when extra inputs are not required

for the primary inquiry. There are no requirements to be a member of this sample. As a result,

including items in this example becomes exceedingly simple. All members of the population are able to

participate in the sample, and their participation is contingent on the researcher's proximity.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study are Senior High School students from Ilocos Norte

National High School (INNHS) who are currently enrolled in the first semester of the school year 2022

– 2023. Their contribution to this study would be extremely beneficial in terms of data collection and

data interpretation as this will determine the fact that the data gathered is credible. The respondents will
be interviewed regarding their perception on the influence and benefits of fashion trend circulating on

media trends to their lives.

Research Instrument

An interview was done and considered as the data-gathering approach for this research in

order to learn more and gain a deeper and broader understanding of their experience. This involves a

process where a researcher solicits information from respondents through verbal interaction. Several

questions were asked throughout the interview to gain information about their various perspectives.

The data variation demonstrates a considerable difference on the data obtained, confirming the premise

of this investigation.

Locale of the Study

The locale of the study is conducted at Ilocos Norte National High School located at Brgy. 4,

Ablan Avenue, Laoag City. Their SHS offers strands such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM); Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM); Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS); Arts and Design (A & D). Specifically, the data gathering was done in the Senior

High School department.

Data Analysis

The data collected from the interview will be analyzed descriptively. This study describes the

perceptions of the students regarding their perception on the influence and benefits of fashion trend

circulating on media trends to their lives. The data gathered will be illustrated through words

describing the experiences and opinions of the respondents.

Chapter IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the results, analysis and interpretation of the data gathered on the influence

and benefits of fashion media trends for senior high school students of Ilocos Norte National High

School.

The researchers used the method of verbal interview to gather data instrument. The study was

conducted last December 5, 2022. there were 6 participants of the study from the senior high students

of Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS), they were chosen based on their qualifications

essential for the study. The questions was asked verbally, giving the respondents 5 minutes to

accomplish all the questions. The responses were then gathered and tabulated. Data collected was

analyzed in a qualitative with a thematic approach. Using a thematic approach, the trends and patterns

that emerged from the narrative data were documented and examined.

A number of themes emerged from the qualitative data. In reviewing the open-ended questions

where respondents provided their own narratives, distinct patterns from the core ideas surrounding the

target themes each question aimed to address were identified.

express. When people dress to impress others, they automatically make others the subject and criteria

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, conclusion and recommendation based on the analysed data.

Summary

This research generally aimed to determine the perception of senior high school students about

fashion trends. Specifically, the study aimed to know the reason why students wear fashion clothes. It
also determined the effect of fashion trends to students and what are the ways to overcome

discrimination to students.

The study used Phenomenological Approach because it involves people’s views and opinion. It

was conducted at Ilocos Norte National High School. Availability sampling technique was used to

determine the total of six (6) respondents. An interview is used as a research instruments that contains

eight (8) open-ended questions was used to gather the needed data. After the interviews were conducted

and the data were retrieved, the data were coded, collated, categorized and analysed.

This study shows that student’s fashion has a big impact to their academic performance. Based

from the answers of the respondents, Social Media and Influencers is the two leading reasons why

students want to wear fashionable clothes.

Moreover, this study shows how to overcome fashion discrimination, and based from the results,

fashion discrimination can be overcome by having confidence and not listening to their opinion.

Students can overcome fashion discrimination by becoming aware of what they wear in this current

society and develop their fashion knowledge. Responding calmly or even not saying anything is the

best way to go. Knowing the basics of fashion trends will broaden one's understanding to become
