Lesson 1- Reading a Critical Evaluation Paper

Evaluation- a critical process of examining a subject thoroughly be considering its


strengths and weaknesses in order to put value in it, whether it is generally good
or bad.
 Evaluation- critical thinking

Critical Thinking- a complex, intellectual process of carefully analyzing and/or


evaluating information at hand.
 Must examine all subject carefully
 Suspend judgments after details were thoroughly scrutinized
 Dismiss prejudices arising before, during and after the evaluation

Plot- pertains to the unfolding of events in the story


Cinematography-
Acting- the technical performance of the main cast in a film or series

A. Definition & Nature of a Critical Evaluation Paper


 Critical Evaluation Essay or a Critique- a type of academic and
professional writing that involves forming judgment about a subject
by assessing it based on a set criteria in order to determine its
overall value.
 Subjects that can be evaluated:
o Creative works- novels, exhibits, film, images, poetry
o Research- journal articles, conference paper
o Media- entertainment TV shows, news reports, editorials,
features
o Software and applications- games, mobile applications,
antivirus
o Devices- PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet
o Services- bank, telecommunication, utilities (water, electricity),
food, hotel
o Products- clothing, cosmetic, food and beverage
o Programs- sports, scholarship, social welfare, educational

B. Purposes of a Critical Evaluation Paper


 It is considered a life skill to be able to evaluate critically since we
are in the age of information and misinformation that is brought to us
by social media.
 Critical Evaluation serves the following functions:
o In the academe, this will allow the students to:
 gain awareness and knowledge of the various creative,
academic, and research output in the field of discipline
 develop critical thinking by analyzing information and
judging its value
 enhance one’s ability to support statements through
evidence, which is a must in academic writing

o In the workplace, this helps you to:


 learn to point out strengths and capitalize on them for
the benefit of your institution
 improve the quality of services, programs, or products
by examining weaknesses in order to improve on them
 innovate and develop new services, programs, or
products catering the needs of the clients/consumers
 contribute toward nation building by conceptualizing
solutions to civic concerns

C. Components of a Critical Paper


Distinct Features of a critical paper
1. A well-presented subject
2. Set of acceptable criteria
3. A definitive claim
4. A well-supported judgment
5. An effective counterargument
6. A readable plan

D. Organization of a Critical Evaluation Paper


I. The introduction presents the subject and provides a context for the
evaluation.
A. General background may contain the following statements:
 hook statement to catch the reader’s attention
(question, statistics, quotation)
 basic information about the subject to provide a context
B. Claim/thesis statement presents the definitive overall
claim/judgment of the subject by enumerating the criteria used
and attaching an adjective to describe each criterion.
II. The body discusses the details of an evaluation by presenting the
following parts:
A. Criterion should be labeled clearly and described to set the
standard clearly.
B. Mini claim/topic sentence presents the judgment for that
particular criterion in sentence form.
C. Supporting evidence discusses the evidence to support
judgment/claim to show credibility.
D. Counterargument (if any) presents an alternative judgment the
readers might raise.
III. The conclusion provides closure to the paper by way of synthesis
and summary.
A. Restatement of the claim/thesis should be a reworded version of
the claim/thesis statement found in the introduction.
B. Summary of the evaluation may be provided for all criteria used in
the evaluation.
C. Insights/implications discusses the significance of the evaluation
to a larger context.
IV. References/Works Cited lists all the sources cited in the paper with
the complete copyright/reference details. It should follow a specific
formatting style prescribed by the instructor.
