2018 YR 12 HSC Biology Assessment Task 1 Notification

This document provides details for a Year 12 Biology task assessing students' understanding of ecosystem dynamics and interrelationships between organisms. The task consists of two parts: 1. A modelling task (Part A) where students must create a model of cell replication, DNA replication, or polypeptide synthesis. They must label the model and write a report evaluating their model and how it illustrates the biological process. 2. An extended response question (Part B) where students will answer one of two questions about the effect of cell replication processes on species continuity or the function and importance of polypeptide synthesis. Students will be assessed on their biological knowledge and understanding as demonstrated through their model and explanation, as well as their

Yr 12 Biology Task 1 2018

Task: Modelling and written task

Weighting: 20%
Due Date: 30th November Term 4 Week 7 (Period 3 Rm 310)
Outcomes Knowledge and understanding
Assessed: BIO12-12 analyses ecosystem dynamics and the interrelationships of organisms within the
ecosystem

Skills in Working Scientifically

BIO11/12-4 selects and processes appropriate qualitative and quantitative data
and information using a range of appropriate media
BIO11/12-6 solves scientific problems using primary and secondary data, critical
thinking skills and scientific processes
BIO11/12-7 communicates scientific understanding using suitable language and terminology for a
specific audience and purpose

Assessment You will be assessed on your ability to:

Criteria: ● demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of key biological processes by
constructing an appropriate model
● evaluate the effectiveness of the model you have constructed
● use your model to explain the biological process to your peers
● assess the importance of biological process on the survival of organisms
● utilise suitable language and terminology to communicate your understanding

Task This task will consist of two parts:

Specifications:
PART A – Modelling task with written report (17 marks)
PART B – ONE extended response question (6 marks)

For Part B you will be given TWO questions. You are to choose ONE question and write
an extended response. You will write your response in class on the paper provided.

The questions for the extended response will be based on the following syllabus dot
points:
• assess the effect of the cell replication processes on the continuity of species
• analyse the function and importance of polypeptide synthesis

Instructions: Part A
You are to create a model of ONE of the following processes:
• Cell replication – mitosis and meiosis (detail of DNA replication is not required)
• DNA replication
• Polypeptide synthesis

Your model:
- may be free standing or attached to a base eg cardboard
- may be constructed using any relevant materials
- must be fully labelled and use keys where appropriate
- must be accompanied by a written description of the biological process you have
modelled (see additional information below)
- must be used to explain the biological concept to your peers (refer to marking
guidelines)

In your report you should:

- describe the biological process
- evaluate your model - include how your model illustrates, simplifies or represents
the biological process; benefits and limitations of your model

You need to include a reference list and use in-text referencing.

Your report must be submitted via TURNITIN.

Part B
You can prepare for the extended response questions by reading relevant sections of your
textbook, watching the Edrolo clip and undertaking research using secondary sources.
