1.0 SCOPE:
1.1 This specification shall not be used as a general purpose specification for ordering 50 ksi (345 MPa) SMYS
structural steels. It is intended to be used with a suite of Welding Specification (WS’s) that can only be used
for welding materials ordered to this specification. Two of the most commonly used WS’s include WS-000629-
( ) and WS-000630-( ). Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS’s) and supporting Procedure Qualification
Records (PQR’s) used to weld this MS shall reference the MS in the base metal description. If required,
contact Welding Engineering for assistance with the selection of an appropriate WS.
1.2 This specification is for the requirements of structural steels in the form of shapes, plates, pipes and sheets
for subsea or other structural applications.
1.3 These materials shall not be used for pressure containing applications.
1.4 These materials shall not be used for NACE applications unless otherwise noted in Table 2.
1.5 Maximum wall thickness shall be in accordance with the referenced industry standard. For 50K material, this
is typically 4”.
1.6 Maximum hardness allowed is Brinell 300 (Hardness Rockwell C 33) unless otherwise noted in Table 2.
3.1 Any of the following steels may be used for this application (unless otherwise designated by second dash
number), provided they comply with all other sections of this specification, including the strength
requirements. Design requirements are to be in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 7 of this
specification. The latest revision of the referenced specifications applies.

4.1 The steel shall be a fully killed grade made from one of the following processes: open hearth, basic oxygen,
or electric-furnace. Additional refining and /or remelt processes are permitted.
4.2 Material may be furnished in the as rolled (hot rolled), control rolled, normalized, stress relieved, or
normalized and tempered condition or as specified in the referenced specification.
4.2 Material shall be fully wrought and free from laps, scabs, bursts, or other detrimental defects
5.0 GRADES:
A dual dash number system will be used to identify the material requirements. The first dash number prescribes the
Charpy V-notch impact requirements. The second dash number prescribes any additional, special requirements.
TABLE 2
Dash Numbers
Note 2: 10 mm X 10 mm impact specimens. Only one test result of a set may be below the minimum
average value.
Note 3: Impact test specimens may be taken either in the transverse or longitudinal direction. The
longitudinal orientation option will be assumed on the MTR provided by the supplier unless the
impact test results are identified as transverse.
TABLE 3
Chemical Composition
Note 1: Carbon equivalent shall be equal to or less than 0.50 as determined by the following formula:
Note 2: Report nitrogen value only if required by the standard listed in Section 3.1.
9.1.1 When material with Charpy V-notch (CVN) requirements is specified, the material shall be impact
tested in accordance with ASTM A370 or as specified by the applicable, referenced material
specification. Results shall meet Table 2.
9.1.2 Reduced size CVN specimens can be used if the material thickness is smaller than 10 mm. The
proper correction factor shall be used to report the results.
9.2.1 When the dash number indicates a requirement for Z direction tensile test (transverse to the
thickness) requirement, the representative material shall be tensile tested in the Z direction in
accordance with ASTM A770.
9.2.2 This requirement should be used in designs when the thickness is greater than 1” (25mm) and the
part will be welded in a manner that creates high residual stresses in the Z direction, or otherwise
loaded in the Z direction.
9.2.4 For plate supplied to API 2H, compliance to the Supplementary Requirement S4 shall be considered
acceptable.
