CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Technology has a big role for everyone essentially to students and teachers in this

pandemic. Technology helps us communicate faster and more widely in a single click, Easy to

use, reliable and you can use it anywhere anytime. With the help of Technology, we can do

many things and as said with a combination of Technology and Social Media everyone can do

anything wirelessly more specifically every student can study wirelessly in their home with their

phones, tablets, Ipads, computers, or laptops. Discussing Social Media there are so many

platforms anyone can use like Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok these are

the Social Media Platforms Students can use to Communicate and to talk to their classmates

and teachers more essentially they can study and pass their works through these apps. On the

other hand, it's just not for communication and work and school-related apps. These said apps

can also be used for entertainment purposes too. Everyone can share their pictures, videos,

memes, and even nonsense thoughts. With this pandemic, it is necessarily important not just to

make yourselves physically fit but to be Mentally Healthy too and there is Social Media helping

everyone cope up with this pandemic, these apps can relieve stress and anxiety, also they can

cure your boredom at home. We can also learn things from these apps and we can share

knowledge if we want. With that said these apps help us Communicate, Have fun and things,

share information, go through our Social life wirelessly and most importantly continue our work

and studying but is that just what Social Media causes to students. As an old saying says,

"Everything too much is bad." and yes too much Social Media does not just cure boredom and

relieve stress it can also be the cause of that. Spending too much Social Media time blocks

1
student’s everyday works and daily doings. It can cause stress and anxiety to in the worst case

it can cause depression too. In this research, we will introduce to you how Social Media Affects

Students with the Covid-19 Pandemic still going. We will give you a deeper knowledge about

how can Social Media give you fun, happiness, success, and how social media ruins your daily

life and makes it worse.

Social Media has been going through an extensive outbreak around the world. It has

been a good tool for social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange

information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. It just came out in the early ’90s but

as the year 2000, it was improved because many programmers were able to discover and design

a new and more helpful tool for many people around the world. Now, many families that have

long-distance communication use social media to keep strong communication with their family

members especially abroad. It has also been used to help students to interact with their

classmates even if they are far away from each other especially when they are working on an

immediate requirement and other Social Media can be used for research.

Although Social Media was proven a good tool for many people, Social Media was also

abused by many users to make crimes. In Social Media, everyone can post and say everything

whatever they want in public, so some people use it for saying bad words to someone they hate

even in public. Also, people were able to post many embarrassing pictures without even asking

for permission from that person.

This academic year 2020-2021 had become a great challenge for all of the students

here in the Philippines, because of this pandemic Covid-19, students have been introduced to a

new learning method that has given a major role to our technology, and these new learning

settings and experiences for everyone. There is an advantage for phone worms and

2
disadvantages for those who don’t get into social media or in their gadgets. Here we will discuss

how can technology affect us in various ways, and how it can help us cope up and make

everything run still with pandemic covid-19 going on until today.

The curriculum in the Philippines relied on face‐to‐face education before COVID‐19,

therefore the educational system has been caught off guard during the crisis. Classes were

terminated earlier and mass promotions occurred in the higher education institutions as some

schools and universities are not prepared nor have the available resources to implement

distance education.

Academic performance or achievement is the outcome of education, the extent to which

a student, teacher, or institution has achieved their educational goals. Academic performance is

commonly measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general

agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important, procedural knowledge

such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts.

According to the research article on ScienceDirect, Heliyon Vol 6 Issue 12, Social media

platforms are considered one of the most used sources of information around the World. The

inexpensive access to the internet, ease to log in, and the presence of a significant number of

users make social media one of the easiest and effective methods to disseminate information.

During the COVID-19 crisis, the response of people is a greater search for information related

to the coronavirus outbreak. Social media platforms have played a positive and negative role

during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social media has become a helpful tool for individuals to

communicate with friends and family during quarantine periods to minimize the negative effect

of isolation which has been linked with anxiety, stress, and fear. Also, It helps to rapidly spread

3
necessary information, identifying symptoms, sharing treatment, and employing control

measures from other countries, and adapting them with available resources.

Background of the Study

Social media platforms are websites and applications used by almost every individual to

communicate with other people globally, that includes Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram,

and TikTok that allows us to find people and share common interests and even real-life

connections which gives both positive and negative impacts to our lives.

Facebook is a social networking service founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo

Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes all of whom are his college

roommates and fellow students at Harvard University. As of September 2012, Facebook has

over one billion active users and about half of them are using Facebook every day via mobile

devices. It allows users to share videos, music, pictures, or memes, articles, and as well as their

thoughts and opinions. Users must register first before using the site, after which they may create

their account and personal profile, additionally, they can customize the information they want

other users to see in their profile and categorize or label their friends into a list like "close friends".

Messenger is a messaging app and platform developed by Facebook, Inc. launched in

August 2011 and is the second most used platform among the following social media platforms

with over 1.3 Billion users worldwide. Messenger allows the users of Facebook to connect and

send instant messages. Having various features such as you can use Messenger for video calls,

calls, send voice messages, pictures, videos not exceeding 25MB file size, GIFs, stickers, and

files. You can also customize your chat by changing the chat themes and react to each other

chat using emoji. And with the newly updated version of messenger, you can now also create a

4
room and use link sharing to connect with a lot of people. You can now share screens and watch

together through video calling with your partner, friend, or family.

On the other hand, Messenger has expanded its reach across Facebook products and services

like Instagram.

Twitter is a microblogging site and the most popular microblogging service. Twitter was

created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and launched

in July 2006. As of 2012 it already has over 100 million users that posted around 340 million

tweets a day and it has more than 140 million active users. Users post and interact with

messages known as "tweets" via mobile phones, tablets, computers, and laptops. However,

users can only read them if unregistered while the registered ones can post, like, and retweet

tweets. Also, Twitter has a 140 characters limit to its posts therefore, users must type tweets

concisely.

In October 2010 an application was launched by Kevin Systrom called "Instagram''. It

is an application for photo and video sharing. After Krieger joined, Kevin and Krieger reassessed

Burbn, a web app and the prototype of Instagram that was originally focused on featuring

photographs, specifically those taken on mobile devices. Instagram racked up to 25,000 users

in just one day after it was launched and it's been downloaded 100,000 times at the end of its

first week and reached over 1 million users in the mid of December. Because of the rapid rise of

Instagram, more investors have become interested in this app and the company. By March 2012,

the app had grown to approximately 27 million users. Also, Instagram was downloaded more

than one million in less than a day after it was released for android phones. And in the same

month and year, Facebook made an offer to purchase Instagram for 1 billion in cash and stock.

5
Hence, before its initial public offering (IPO). Facebook successfully acquired the company worth

1 Billion in cash and stock.

Lastly is TikTok, and currently, the most popular social media app surpassing other social

media platforms like Facebook and was downloaded more than one billion times as of 2018. It

is a social networking site for sharing, creating, and discovering different kinds of videos. The

majority of the users are young people in which became a way for them to showcase their talents

and express themselves through singing, dancing, acting, and editing. TikTok was likely a

duplicate of Musical.ly and in August 2018, TikTok absorbed Musical.ly and all of the accounts

in Musical.ly were automatically migrated in TikTok but you can sign in using third-party accounts

such as Facebook and Instagram. However social media purposes have been used more

frequently due to this recent pandemic not just for students and teachers but everyone around

the globe.

There has been a virus that has spread worldwide called coronavirus disease 2019

(COVID-19). It is a respiratory tract illness resulting from infection with severe acute respiratory

syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In current months, the outbreak of the COVID-19

pandemic has become a major public health challenge for the health systems around the world.

And due to this recent pandemic, the usage of Social Media has become more dominant not

only for students and teachers but everyone around the globe. Through these social media

platforms, it helps individuals to communicate with friends and family during quarantine periods

to minimize the negative effect of isolation linking with anxiety, stress, fear, and depression.

Moreover, it helps to rapidly spread information and employ control measures within the country

and from other countries. Today most youths and students have Facebook accounts, also

because the majority of the millennials nowadays have their gadgets. Some studies have shown

6
that students are so fascinated by social media that they are online for almost 24 hours. Though

it may be recognized as one of the helpful tools for students as a resource or source of

information especially because of this pandemic that the education of students is through online,

too much and improper usage of the said social media platforms can be harmful. It could affect

our health, mental health, and academic performance. Since Face-to-face education is not

allowed because of the pandemic, Online Learning is conducted because according to DepEd

the pandemic Covid19 shouldn't be a hindrance to the education of youth. Online learning is a

form of education that takes place over the internet. Where classes will be conducted using

virtual classrooms instead of a physical classroom. And because of this new protocol having a

Facebook and messenger is important for students and teachers to stay connected and for

school announcements. However, even though some students say that it gives them numerous

benefits, using the above-mentioned social media platforms can be addictive. Students are

tempted to abandon their homework and they are more likely not to attend their online

interactions that could lead to the impaired academic performance of the students. Therefore,

studies about the advantages and disadvantages of social media in students are still a topic, the

impact it gives to students regarding their health and academic performances. Especially now

amid the pandemic.

7
Conceptual Framework

The I-P-O model was used by the researchers as a guide in their study. The

Input-Output (IPO) Model is a functional graph that recognizes the inputs, outputs, and

processing tasks required to transform inputs into outputs. The model is sometimes

configured to include any storage that might happen in the process as well.

The input represents the flow of data and materials into the process from the

outside. The processing step includes all tasks required to effect the transformation of

the inputs. The outputs are the data and materials flowing out of the transformation

process.

For the input component, the independent variables include the demographic

profile of the respondents who are the Grade 11 HUMSS Magsaysay & Laurel of St. Ives

School Inc.

For the process component, the researchers had the tally, analysis & interpretation

of the data gathered through the online survey questionnaires they have answered.

Finally, the output component contains the disadvantages and advantages

experienced by the Grade 11 HUMSS Laurel and Magsaysay through the usage of Social

Media platforms. The result of the study is to maintain the balance of the effects of Social

Media Platforms usage, especially to students. This would serve as a solution to the

problem identified and expected to provide tips or guides for a more positive engagement

of social media usage to the online learning of students, particularly to Grade 11 students

with the age bracket of 16-19.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature and Studies

Local Related Literature and Studies

Digital technology has been highly vital for the widespread dissemination of information and

guidelines that are critical for dealing with the pandemic. Due to the total community lockdown

worldwide, the greater majority of the earth's population diverted to the use of digital technology

for multiple purposes.

(Pan, 2020) concluded in their research that the pandemic has brought people to focus

on the advantages of the virtual world within the confines of their homes. For example, students

themselves are not able to attend school through face‐to‐face education, so they opted for social

media to search for news and trends. A study reported that in a local place in China, 38.30% of

the students searched for news related to the pandemic every day, and accessed online lessons

using mobile phones (98.85%) and laptops (75.38%).

(Joo & Teng, 2017) they reputed that the emergence of social technologies created online

activities which posit arguments for both advantages and disadvantages on the social and

educational community. An innovative interaction can take place between a classic community

and a virtual community, however, it is unknown whether the future will struggle and challenge

human learning and social relationships in the digital age.

In the case study of Toquero and Talidong on the year 2020, they have stated in there

that the emerging technologies such as Facebook, Youtube, and TikTok offered positive

quarantine experiences to the virtual groups to create a constructive outlook for the stakeholders

as they contribute for similar experiences and coping strategies during the crisis.

15
It is also written in there that in terms of social the use of emerging technologies can

empower students as they can share critical information and give relevant feedback in the virtual

world to expedite the process of information exchange, especially during the pandemic. The

positive effects of emerging technologies can also cater to the emotional and psychological

needs to lessen their stress and anxiety due to the home quarantine.

And academically, it is recommended to use emerging technologies as supplementary tools

for instruction during and after the emergency. The teachers can make use of social media to

communicate with the students and give educational instruction as numerous students are using

Facebook. Through the said social technology, the university can create a COVID‐19 information

center with simplified and accessible materials for the students and other stakeholders in the

local community to readily access and obtain information about COVID‐19. Current updates from

relevant organizations worldwide are also possible due to the social technology that educates

people to be well‐informed on the trends of COVID‐19

(NapoleonCat 2020) in their research study the predictions of five theories on how social

interaction through Facebook can make changes in the psychological well‐being of people. The

result provided evidence that the “effects depend on the nature of the communication and the

relationship between communicators. Receiving more personalized communication—targeted,

composed text—from strong ties was linked to improvements in well‐being” (Burke & Krauke,

2016, p. 276). Despite the result, it encourages further research for a precise theory.

(Talidong & Toquero, 2020) said that the virtual relationships that emerged have been vital

for everyone as they found coping mechanisms to counter the stress and anxiety brought by the

pandemic

16
(Antonucci 2017) have concluded that despite the emergency, the utilization of “emerging

technologies hold great promise for the future by overcoming traditional barriers to maintaining

social contact, support exchange, and information acquisition”

Astodello (2016) articulated that since students are highly motivated to use social media

sites the majority of them use these to satisfy their social needs more than their academic needs.

They have the freedom to do whatever they want, they can upload or download data, they can

make new friends and comment on other people’s lives, and they can even create other online

identities the real world does not allow.

Foreign Literature and Studies

Banquil and Chua (2009) came up with a conclusion in this study that social networking

sites do affect one’s academic performance adversely. It directly causes the gradual drop of

grades of students

Heafner and Friedman (2011) stressed that participation in social media creates a more

collaborative and communicative learning environment for students by providing opportunities

for discussions and interactions with their peers. Social networks encourage discovery.

According to the research of Brubaker (2013), the current generation of college students has

been exposed to a technology that led them to rely on social media such as Facebook and

Twitter. It has an impact on academic performance when students overuse or multitask while

doing their school work.

(Egedegbe, 2014) The effect of SNS usage will depend on the type of SNS the student is

using, if student uses the internet for the purpose of leisure activity that interferes with academic,

it will affect the student academic performance negatively

17
(Bond, Buntins, Bedenlier, Zawacki‐Richter, & Kerres, 2020) written in their article in using

social media to supplement future endeavors related to digital learning in the Philippines, the

social media can increase student engagement in terms of behavioral, affective, and cognitive

domains

(Chawinga, 2017) hypothesized that for the students to maximize learning using social media,

nonetheless, the purpose should be defined for its inclusion in the courses so that the benefits

of incorporating technologies can be achieved through independent learning among the students

(Mnkandla & Minnaar, 2017, p. 246) According to the book, one study confirmed through a

metasynthesis that “social media such as blogs and wikis for idea generation, problem‐solving

through discussions, Skype or Google Hangout, Facebook, and even mobile apps, such as

WhatsApp” can pave the way to establish and co‐create knowledge using digital technology.

(Mnkandla & Minnaar, 2017, p. 228) It is written in the book that the situation epitomizes

the influential effects of emerging technologies to “effectively facilitate social learning,

collaboration, and interaction among students and between students and lecturers to enhance

deep learning” while maintaining a safe environment that follows social distancing and lockdown

protocols to fight against COVID‐19.

(Howard, 2011) spoken that “social media has become a serious academic tool for many

scholars, who use them for collaborative writing, conferencing, sharing images, and other

research-related activities”

(Lovari & Bowen, 2020) rationalized that during each community crisis and pandemic

people seek help, information, and stay informed on what is happening around us. The

18
information circulated through social media is quite useful to get awareness and information

regarding the global scenario of the outbreak.

Dr. Muhammad Saud (2020) stated that during these pandemic days where people are

restricted to their homes, and families are bound to follow the social distancing and precautions

for physical interactions. In the meantime, the usage of social media platforms is perceived as

useful for sharing information, learning, increasing awareness, and staying connected with the

rest of the world.

According to the research article of Eqbal Radwan, Afnan Radwan, and Walaan Radwan

(2020) the conclusion in their online study, is that they found that social media has a significant

effect on spreading panic about the COVID-19 pandemic among students, with a potential

negative impact on their mental health and psychological well-being. Their study showed a

significant positive correlation between social media and the spreading of panic about COVID-

19. During the closure of schools, students are using social media to continue their learning as

well as to know more information about the COVID-19 outbreak. The effect of social media panic

among students varies depending on a student's age and gender

Research Methodology
Research Method

The method used by the researcher on this research is descriptive to determine the

“Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media Platforms: Facebook, Messenger, Twitter,

Instagram and TikTok during this Pandemic Covid-19 to the Academic Performance of Grade

11 HUMSS Laurel and Magsaysay from St. Ives School Inc. A.Y 2020-2021” as a unit of analysis.

This approach is used to describe variables rather than to test a predicted relationship between

variables. The descriptive research methodology and design provide a survey questionnaire

done online is prepared for the respondents contain quantitative questions. Quantitative

questions are used to gather statistical information for the researcher to get a numerical form of

responses from the chosen respondents. This study aims to gather information from the chosen

respondents to come up with strategies for a positive engagement of students on social media

in online learning.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at St. Ives School Inc., a private institution and the year founded was

1994, which has Pre-Schools, Kindergarten, Elementary School, and High Schools under DepEd

Taguig City. This school contains Senior High School and offers three tracks which are

Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS), and

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). This school was named after the Patron of Lawyers

which is St. Ives Helory, He was born in Treguier Brittany at Kermartin. The school was owned

and is directed by Mrs. Erlinda A Cruz. The school color is green, gold and white, School virtues

are Charity, Wisdom, and Obedience and lastly, the school symbolizes a dove, palm leaf, rays,

20
and book. Every year the school celebrated its Anniversary when it was discovered and it’s every

last week of October, A whole week of foundation day, and the anniversary of the school.

Teachers, Students, Staff, Admins, and Directors joined and celebrated it every year and for

now, the school is in its 26th year. The school was located at #408 Severina Subdivision,

Bagumbayan Taguig City.

Respondents of the Study

The Respondents of this study are the students of grade 11 HUMSS A Magsaysay and

HUMSS B Laurel from St. Ives School Inc.(A.Y 2020-2021). The respondents are the ones who

answer the problem presented in the current study. The online survey questionnaire given to

them by the researcher allows them to get the information that the researcher needs.

21
Sampling Technique

The Stratified Random technique was used in the study; The information we gathered

and collected was about The Advantages and Disadvantages of social media platforms:

Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok during this pandemic covid-19 from Grade

11 HUMSS Magsaysay and Laurel of St. Ives School Inc. A.Y 2020-2021 to provide information

about what they are experiencing in the new education system as a result of this pandemic

Covid-19. The Stratified Random Technique to select the respondents from Grade 11 HUMSS

Laurel and Magsaysay. The online survey questionnaires were randomly answered by the

respondents. Due to the pandemic Covid-19, the online survey questionnaires were utilized with

the help of Google Forms, wherein it made the respondents easily access and answer the survey

questionnaire without any physical contact. with the researchers.

Instrumentation

To provide and gather as much informative and appropriate data, the researchers

will make use of the quantitative method. This method includes the use of online survey

questionnaires with the use of Google Form. Since this research is done amidst the Global

Pandemic which is the Covid-19 the researchers have tried to use an alternative way to perform

their online survey questionnaires which is through Google Form as the main data gathering tool

for this study to avoid any physical contact between the researchers and the respondents. The

survey questionnaires will be distributed to Grade 11 HUMSS of St. Ives School Inc. The

research instrument consists of three sections. The first one consists of items that will provide

the respondent's profile such as gender, age, and section. The second one is to determine what

kind of social media platform they have been using and the third part consists of 15 questions to

determine the advantages and disadvantages of the social media to Grade 11 HUMSS Laurel

22
and Magsaysay of St. Ives School Inc. The following questions are made by the researchers

which will be submitted for validation.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data was collected and gathered after the respondents answered the online

survey questionnaires in this study, the result will be processed to get the frequency and

percentage method, also to get a more clarified interpretation for the gathered data the

researchers used the formula for the weighted mean. This study uses an arbitrary scale of value

and it consists of data value, scale, and interpretation of what is the result based on the

questions. Researchers use the 4-point Likert Scale. Weighted mean and Interpretation help

more the researchers to get a more clarified and well-interpreted result from the respondents.

The Frequency and Percentage Method

This method uses to collect all the data and total demographic profile of age, gender and

section also to collect the answer from the respondents.

Frequency and Percentage Method Formula:

where: % - Percentage

F - Frequency
- Total number of respondents

100 - Constant

23
The Weighted Mean

This is used to answer specific problems in each question to provide the specific answer of
the chosen respondents.

The Weighted Mean involves the use of the formula:

Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

In this chapter the analysis and interpretation of the data acquired from the submitted

online survey questionnaires of the respondents correlated to the given problem in this study.

The data gathered was analyzed and interpreted along with its corresponding charts presented

sequentially to expound the data presentations and analysis.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age;
1.2 gender; and
1.3 class section?

(16 y/old)

Graph 1 shows the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age. The highest
percentage from the population of the Grade 11-HUMSS is 48.3% a total number of 28
respondents out of 58 respondents that are 17 years old, next is the 34.5% covering the number
26
of 20 respondents is the population of 16 years old, while the 15.5% that is equivalent to 9
respondents of the population is 18 years old, the least percentage of the population is the only
student that is 19 years old which is the 1% of the whole population, on the other hand, there is
no grade 11 HUMSS that is under the age bracket of 20.

GRAPH 2
Demographic Profile of the Respondents in Terms of Gender

The graph above shows the demographic profile of the Grade 11 HUMSS Laurel and
Magsaysay in terms of gender. The gender composition of the female students is 58.6% of the
population a total of 34 respondents out of 58 respondents while 41.4% that is equivalent to 24
respondents are male, gathering a total of 100% of the respondent population. Therefore the
number of female students is higher in scale than the number of males in Grade 11 HUMSS
Laurel and Magsaysay.

Magsaysay : 30

This chart shows the demographic profile in terms of the class section since there are 2 sections
in Grade 11 which are Laurel and Magsaysay. Grade 11-HUMSS Laurel covers 49% of the
population covering the number of 28 students out of 33 students. Grade 11-HUMSS Magsaysay
has 51% equivalent to 30 respondents out of 36 students in their section so all in all there are
58 respondents with 11 non-respondents out of 69 respondents from Grade 11-HUMSS
Magsaysay and Laurel. Therefore, with the difference of 1 respondent equivalent to 1.7% of
the section of Grade 11, HUMSS Magsaysay has more contributors than the Grade 11 HUMSS
Laurel.

Twitter : 16
(Messenger)

The graph above shows how many respondents use these social media platforms and
what are the most used social media platforms as well as what got the least number of users.
The platform that has the greatest number of users among the students is Facebook since all
of the respondents use Facebook as a tool of communication to their classmates, friends, and
family covering 33% of the users which is the highest percentage. the second one is Messenger
it got 26% that equals 47 users out of 58 students, the third one is TikTok it has 16% composing
of 29 respondents out of 58 respondents, next is Instagram gathering the number of 28 users
equivalent to 16% and lastly is Twitter that got the lowest percentage and least number of users
with a total 9% or 16 respondents out of 58 respondents. Since Facebook and Messenger are
two different platforms . Respondents can still chat with their friends, family, and teachers using
their Facebook accounts without the need to access their messenger. For there is a feature or
another version of Facebook which is the FB Lite wherein you can still message your friends,
without the use of Messenger and vice versa the respondents can chat a person using
messenger without facebook but they should accept first the person's message request and by
then they can message or chat all the time. Another thing is that when the respondents log in to
their Facebook accounts through their computer browser or phone browser then go to the
websites like internet.org, the respondents can freely access their facebook accounts for free
and message or chat with the person they want without accessing their messenger but only their
facebook acconts. These explains why the frequency of the users of Facebook and messenger
isn’t the same as shown on the graph above.

Enumerated below are the questions regarding on how the respondents make
use of their social media platforms and its impact to rhem as a student and
individual.

As per the gathered data from the online survey questionnaires answered by the
respondents it shows that their usage of social media has been influential on their academic
performance especially when needed with a mean of 2.29. The chart shows that 60% or 35
respondents out of 58 respondents agreed that they only use social media platforms that are
needed for academic purposes, 24% or 14 respondents out of 58 respondents chose to disagree
that social media platforms not only use for academic purposes, but 9% or 5 respondents also
choose strongly agree and the idea that these 5 respondents are only using the social media
platforms that are needed for academic purposes and last is 7% or 4 respondents strongly
disagreed and shows that these 4 respondents are not using social media platforms for
academic purposes only. So all in all the number of students that use social media only for school
purposes is larger in number than those who30use it more for their leisure and other purposes.

This chart implies that the respondents that answered disagree got the highest percentage
it has 41% or 24 respondents out of 58 respondents and shows that they haven’t been
late/absent because of being too immersed with their social media accounts, next is 33% or 19
respondents out of 58 respondents agreed that they have been late/absent for their online class
because of using social media accounts, 24% or 14 respondents strongly disagreed and never
tried to have an absent/late because of using social media accounts and lastly strongly agree
got the lowest percentage, it has 2% or 1 respondent out of 58 respondents. With a mean of
2.12 that is interpreted as uninfluential, this means that the students are not that immersed in
social media that may lead them to become late or absent for their scheduled online class. All in
31
all, this shows that the majority of the respondents seems to know their limitations and set their
priorities between their academics and usage of social media, although 19 of the respondents
agreed and one of them strongly claimed and proved that they have become late/absent on their
scheduled online class due to being too immersed with their social media accounts and forgot
their supposed schedule.

the same percentage of 21% or 12 respondents out of 58 respondents and lastly is 3% or 2
respondents strongly agreed that they are still browsing their social media apps even during
class hour. Gathering a weighted mean of 2.07 meaning to say that social media are not that
influential to the students in times of online classes. This shows that the large portion of the

32
Grade 11 HUMSS are responsible enough to set aside their social media accounts in time of
online classes although the remaining portion claims that they have been browsing their social
media accounts even during class hours. This means that despite the temptation and laid
opportunity to the respondents to browse and check their accounts during online class they
continue to focus and listen to their classes at the same time set their attention and priority to
their studies.

The chart above indicates that from the gathered data from the respondent's results
to a 2.72 mean that implies addiction to social media is influential enough to become a hindrance
and bring a problematic issue to the student’s academic performance. Out of 58 respondents,
59% or 34 respondents agreed that social media addiction brings problematic issues to student’s
academic performance, while 9% or 5 respondents out of 58 respondents strongly agreed and

33
claimed the hindrance of social media addiction to their academic performance. On the other
hand, the remaining 29% or 17 respondents disagreed, and is 3% or 2 strongly disagreed and
never believed the statement given that social media addiction brings problematic issues to
student’s performance. That means to say this portion of the students still finds and believes that
there is still a way to not be hindered with their academics performance despite the addiction to
social media.

respondents that agreed and 29% or 17 respondents out of 58 respondents strongly agreed that
they have been using their social media accounts with discipline and avoid being rude and cause
harm to others in the online community. Meaning to say the majority and almost all of the

34
students from Grade 11 HUMSS Magsaysay and Del Pillar are aware of the netiquette or
behavior that should be observed and performed and the online community and that they are
responsible and have enough knowledge to not cause chaos to the online community and
disturbance to other people while using their social media accounts. While on the other hand

academic performance with a mean of 2.03. Out of 58 respondents, 69% a total of 40 which is

36
more than half of the respondent agreed and 17% a total of 10 students strongly agreed that
social media platforms do provide more easy access and free learning materials that is helpful
to the academic status of the students, while on the other hand, the least number of the
respondents that have strongly disagreed and disagree with how social media can’t be that much
helpful on providing more easy access and free learning materials are both 7% a total of 4
students. As per the chart, almost all of the respondents have used their social media as a tool
that can help them in their studies like accessing easy and free learning material that is
advantageous for their academic performance. However, there is still the least number of
respondents that disagreed and haven’t used social media as a tool to help them in their

distance is not a hindrance in terms of communication with the use of social media to the
respondents. Meaning to say despite the distance the respondents still receive motivations and
help from their loved ones in far distance to cope up with the stress and hard times with the new
online learning this pandemic covid-19. All in all, this states that social media made the
respondents communicate easier with their loved ones especially this pandemic Covid 19 that
face-to-face interaction is forbidden due to the quarantine. However, there is still the least
number of students who have difficulty communicating with their family or loved ones in the far
distance and social media can’t help them either.

Graph 17 illustrates the answers of the respondents gathered by the researchers. This
shows that the students aren’t that influenced by social media to the point that they would
prioritize using social media over-performing their chores. There are 32 respondents equivalent
to 55% has disagreed and 17% total of 10 respondents has strongly disagreed that they do not
prioritize using their social media than their school works and chores, while there are 14 that
equals 24% students that agreed and 4% a number of 2 students strongly agreed that they have
prioritized their social media that their chores and school work. This shows that the number of
students that prioritize their school works and chores is greater than those who neglect their
work. This implies that the students that know how to balance and prioritize their activities and
work. However, the number of students that neglect their activities is still somewhat large and
near to the sums of the students that have prioritized their works and activities.

This implies that almost all of the respondents have already accessed and gathered fake news
from social media that has caused such negative thoughts and feelings such as disturbance and
panic which is disturbing. Meaning to say a large portion of the students is not that
knowledgeable to distinguish a fact from fake news. On the other hand, there is also a small
portion of students that haven’t accessed any fake news that caused disturbance to them which
is a good sign.

Chapter 5
Summary, Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations
Summary
The main purpose of this research is to determine the positive and negative impacts of

the usage of social media platforms: Facebook, Messenger, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter this

Pandemic Covid-19 at St. Ives School Inc. and to provide strategies for positive engagement of

social media to online learning. Particularly, this study strived to answer the following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to 1.1 age, 1.2 genders, 1.3

class section? 2. How many respondents use the following social media platform: 2.1. Facebook,

2.2 Instagram, 2.3 Twitter, 2.4 TikTok; and 2.5 Messenger? 3. What are the effects of the usage

of social media to grade 11 students during this Pandemic Covid-19? 4. Are there any gains that

the respondents got while using social media platforms during this Pandemic Covid-19? 5.

During this Pandemic Covid-19 in what way does Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and

TikTok help the respondents? 6. Do Social Media Platforms help the respondents in terms of the

New Learning System: Online Distance Learning this Pandemic: Covid-19? The respondents of

this study are the Grade 11 HUMSS Magsaysay and Laurel at St. Ives School Inc. that are

randomly selected when the study was being done. They are composed of fifty-eight (58)

students.

The researchers used the Descriptive Research Method because it provides facts and

credible data for the study with adequate and accurate interpretation of the findings. The

research instrument utilized by the researchers in facilitating the study is an online survey

questionnaire validated by the Research Adviser.

45
The research instrument contains questions regarding the demographic profile, how the

respondents use their social media accounts, and its impact on their lives. The answered

questionnaires were studied, analyzed, and interpret carefully by the researchers. It was

evaluated meticulously in order to give the needed outcome of the study. Computed data were

presented in a pie chart and are tabulated to explain the meaning of the results of the study

which answers the stated problems. To make the findings and conclusions more accurate and

scientific, the percentage method was used. This is to present the idea of the statements from

numbers 1 to 15.

According to the result of the online survey questionnaire the respondents are generally

influenced by social media positively for the use of social media have helped them in their

academic performances, engaged communication effectively with their teachers, free and

access to online material, and had improved their research skills. So, all in all the respondents

seem to know how to utilize and explore the use of their social media for their benefits and gain.

Another thing is that social media haven’t influenced the Grade 11 HUMSS Magsaysay and

Laurel to the extent of being late and absent to their online classes due to being too immersed

on their social media platforms and using their social media platforms even during online class

which is a proof that the respondents do perform time management.

Findings
The data gathered and analyzed by the researchers were enumerated below for a clear

presentation of how the problems of the study were responded to.

1. Demographic Profile of the Respondents According to the data analyzed by the researchers,

100% or 58 respondents out of the total population of students per section is within the

appropriate age bracket for grade 11 HUMSS. Ages 16, comprising 34.5% of the total sample,

46
17, comprising 48.3% of the total sample, 18, covering 15.5 of the total sample, 19, comprising

1.7% of the total sample and 20, comprising 0% of the total sample are among the

aforementioned age bracket. Out of this total sample, 24 or 41.4% are male while the greater

half of 58.6% composed of 34 females. Respondents are randomly selected from 2 sections of

Grade 10 in St. Ives School wherein section Magsaysay has the largest number of respondents,

comprising 51.00% of the total percentage equivalent to 30 samples out of 58 respondents'

samples. Laurel has the least number of respondents sample, with only 49% or 28 samples out

of 58 total respondents’ samples.

2. According to the data gathered when the respondents are grouped according to their

demographic profile, respondents show significant results, these results have great impacts on

the very concept of this research. Students who belong on the appropriate age bracket for grade

11 HUMSS seem to show higher means of using a specific social media platform compared to

the other. The range of difference is quite distant in each social media platform. These details

show what platform is used the most. In terms of gender, female students display higher usage

of social media platforms. These differences are very visible, these details are presented by the

table in the prior chapters.

3. Most used Social Media platforms - based on the researchers’ data collection and analysis in

this pandemic Covid-19. Facebook is the most popular platform among students, with an

average of 33 percent of users (all of the respondents), followed by Messenger with 28 percent

of users (47 out of 58 students). Since Facebook and Messenger were primarily used for

academic purposes, especially now with the New Learning System: The Distance Learning

System. And there comes TikTok in second with a total of 16% of the vote, with 29 out of 58

people voting, mainly for entertainment. Following closely behind is Instagram, which has 28

47
users and accounts for 16 percent of the total. Lastly, Twitter received 9% of the vote, with 16

users out of 58 students and the least used platform among the learners.

4. Advantages of Social Media Platforms to the Grade 11 HUMSS during Pandemic Covid-19 -

Because of the Pandemic Covid-19, there is a need for a new learning system. The use of the

aforementioned social media platforms is widespread, particularly among students and teachers

worldwide. And according to the data gathered and analyzed by the researchers, these platforms

have been a great help for students and teachers in keeping up with the New Learning System.

It helps students and teachers to communicate effectively regarding school works and lessons.

Social Media also provides more easy access and learning materials, which are sufficient to

improve their academic performances, in which 69% or 40 of the respondents agree, and 17%

or 10 of the students voted strongly agree. Also, 73% agree that social media helps improve

their research skills.

5.Disadvantages of Social Media to Grade 11 HUMSS during this pandemic Covid-19 -

According to chart 8, Students' exposure to and addiction to social media has a notable effect

on their academic performance, causing a problem, mainly because these social media

platforms are also a distraction for students. And according to 52% population of the

respondents, this could lead to failing grades. Moreover, 83 percent of the respondents agree

that they have read or been exposed to fake news that has caused a disturbance, which has a

significant impact on people's lives, particularly amid the pandemic.

6. Respondents' behavior of using Social Media- As shown in the data, Grade 11 HUMSS

Magsaysay and Laurel are aware of the consequences and effects of using the platforms

frequently and are knowledgeable enough to know how to use the following social media

platforms correctly to avoid harming others. Further to that, as per the statistics, a higher

48
percentage of students use social media for academic purposes than for recreational or other

purposes.

Conclusions
According to the data analyzed and presented, the researchers have generated the

following suppositions:

1. A great part of the Grade 11 Students of St. Ives School accounts for students who belong to

the ideal age bracket for grade 11 HUMSS. Specifically, 17-years-old dominate the class number

by up to 48.3% of the total population.

2. In terms of gender, female students of St. Ives School are more numerous than male students.

3. Grade 11 Students of St. Ives School exhibit higher usage of Facebook and Messenger

compared to other Social media platforms.

4. According to the result of the online survey questionnaire the respondents are generally

influenced by social media positively for the use of social media have helped them in their

academic performances, engaged communication effectively with their teachers, free and

access to online material, and had improved their research skills. Social media has positively

influenced the respondents too in terms of communication with their loved ones that are far from

them despite the pandemic which is greatly beneficial for their social relationship. Lastly, social

media platforms have also instilled discipline in the respondents for they know how to use their

social media platforms and not cause harm to others as well particularly to the online community.

It has also left a great impact on their mental health for it serves as their therapy to ease their

stress and at the same time entertain them to lift their mood. So, all in all, the respondents seem

to know how to utilize and explore the use of their social media for their benefits and gain.

49
5. Comprehensively the respondents are more likely to be influenced by social media that it has

become a distraction to their study habits and brought problematic issues on their academic

performances and even caused failed grades and harmed their health once used too much.

Social media has also brought disturbance and panic to the respondents due to fake news that

is posted in it which is greatly disturbing for the fact that the respondents seem not to know how

to distinguish fact from fake pieces of information scattered in the online community. On the

other hand, social media haven’t influenced the Grade 11 HUMSS Magsaysay and Laurel to the

extent of being late and absent to their online classes due to being too immersed on their social

media platforms and using their social media platforms even during online class which is a proof

that the respondents do perform time management. With these data gathered the researchers

concluded that despite the temptation of procrastinating the students still know what do they

need to prioritize such as their school works and chores first before their leisure activities.

Recommendations

1. The researchers would like to recommend to the teachers that they can make their teaching

more interesting to their students by using memes. They can use the meme in their PowerPoints

to make it more interesting to look at and to listen to. They can also discuss lectures with meme

references. Memes can be from Facebook and Tiktok wherein teachers can edit funny pictures

or pictures with humor and make it related to their lesson.

2. Teachers can also make 1 – 2 minutes TikTok videos or make a PowerPoint/Discussion that

is TikTok trend-inspired so their students will be more interested in listening. By these videos,

50
the students can be more engaged in listening and learning by seeing such a creative and trendy

way to learn their lessons easily and at the same time improve their academic performance.

3. The teachers also can provide recorded videos of their lessons and upload it on Facebook

so that even though they don’t have an online class session students can watch the videos and

easily understand their lesson than just reading their modules anytime and anywhere.

4. Teachers can also be live on Facebook for a more interesting discussion of their lessons. By

being live on Facebook students and teachers can interact in real-time and comment on their

questions or clarification regarding the lesson and even answer the questions asked by the

teachers on live.

5. Teachers can also use the social media platform Twitter to enhance the capability of the

students in constructing an essay with the platform's feature of having a maximum of 140

characters. By using these features students can enhance their vocabulary and sense of being

comprehensive by being able to compose a brief essay but complete in details and information.

For example is using the platform Twitter to held a treasure word hunt Activity Teachers will

introduce a hashtag, which can be done individually or in groups, and then ask students to dig

up or discover information about it by searching the given hashtag on Twitter and as a result,

Students' understanding and knowledge of the topic will be broader and information about the

specific topic will not be limited. This can also be a way for students to learn how their classroom

learnings are applied in the real world.

6. Researchers would like to recommend to the students that they can watch educational videos

on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok that can gain their knowledge so that

students can be more engaged in learning and studying. In these social media platforms,
students can find and watch creative videos made or shared by teachers or other professionals

and educated people with various topics that can be related to their lesson in just 2 - 5 minutes.

7. Using Facebook, Messenger, and Twitter teachers can post reminders of assignments due

dates or inspirational quotes, and helpful links to practice quizzes or resources. With this new

online learning curriculum, the continuous feedback of the teachers regarding the performance

of the students will be a great help to students so that learners can identify which behaviors or

skills need to be improved.

8. For the Students they can access online and interactive classrooms like zoom, google meet,

messenger rooms, and webinars apps like Vsmart and Google classroom as a tool to help them

cope up with the new online learning curriculum and have a 2-way communication for their

classes live and in real-time even though there is no face-to-face interaction. By using these

apps and websites students can attend their scheduled online classes for free or have a premium

subscription. Students can also attend webinars to continue studying their lessons with complete

lectures. Another thing is that with the help of their social media platforms such as Facebook

and messenger they can access links from various teacher’s and professor’s meeting links for

their online classes and webinars easily and for free.

9. The researchers recommend that Students can also use Instagram as a learning tool so that

they can follow their teacher or other users who upload pictures and videos that can enhance

and extend their knowledge such as tutorials or educational short clips posted on Instagram.

Students and teachers can also post or access inspirational messages and pictures that can lift

their moods and be more inspired and motivated to strive harder to reach their goals. During

the pandemic, students should be encouraged to learn and study further. Teachers may also

use Instagram as a teaching tool for their students by uploading images or recorded lessons. So
that students are more informed towards learning. Instagram can be also used as a

communication tool between teachers and students. Instagram is also best for sending and

receiving photos or videos needed for academics because in messenger the photos and videos

have a tendency to get very blurry and it is easier to get and send files from Instagram

10. The researchers also recommend that the Messenger should be used by the teachers and

students. This is the kind of social media platform that allows users to create group chats to

discuss the lessons you're teaching or studies and even used as a tool to pass the activities the

teachers have distributed. Asynchronous lessons can be done here through group chats, and

Synchronous lessons can be done through video calls and the new feature in messenger

wherein you can create virtual rooms and interact with your students online and in real time,

links of the rooms can be sent or forwarded to you class group chats so that they can easily

enter the room. This will improve students' engagement in learning even without any face-to-

face interaction, which is especially important in this time of pandemic.

11. For the parents the researchers would like to recommend them to monitor their child’s online

activity and online classes. To make sure that they would attend their online classes regularly

and on time. Parents can also motivate their kids to do better and guide them to cope up easily

with the new online learning. They can also attend Parent’s Conferences held by the School

Administration to monitor their child’s academic performance. They can also mention or tag their

kids on their social media platforms with the posts on their newsfeeds that contain links,

educational videos, inspirational videos, quotes, or videos that will surely help their child’s

performance in school at the same time motivate them and gain additional information or

knowledge.
12. For the developers the researcher recommends to them to put an age restriction on each

platform on what age is only capable of using the said platform. At the same time, the

researchers encourages the developers to regularly monitor the information and data scattered

in their platforms to stop the spreading of fake information and data that can bring disturbance

or panic to the users. The developers can also add an educational game that is in trend

nowadays to their platforms to bring an educational at the same time fun activity to the users no

matter what age they are. For example, is word games or brain exercises such as math

problems, vocabulary practices, or enhancement with a touch of fantacy, horror, or romance

theme. These would surely attract everyone to use their social media platforms and at the same

time instill knowledge to the users.

Output:

Strategies for positive engagement of social media in online learning

51

These strategies will help students to be more engaged in the innovative way of learning

during this pandemic (Covid-19)

●Synchronous learning Strategy

Synchronous learning means that the teacher and students should have online interactions

together at the same time but in different places, the teacher interacts with students using tools

like zoom, google meet, and other virtual classrooms to engage in live conversations, live

classes, and meetings. The advantage of synchronous learning is when the meeting progresses

Students will ask questions and receive answers at the same time. it provides a schedule to

support the students who have difficulties with their activities. With the help of the Social Media
Platforms such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok teachers and students

can still have interaction, a two-way interaction, wherein they can still ask and answer questions

for further clarification regarding their lessons even in real-time by using the feature of being live

in these platforms.

● Asynchronous learning Strategies

Asynchronous learning refers to when the teacher provides a recorded presentation allowing

their students to have their schedule within a certain period of time the students can access their

complete lecture, activities, homework, and other learning materials. Students can re-watch

recorded sessions to deepen their understanding or to review content before a final exam.

Students can also go back and review threads from discussion groups long after the discussions

have ended. Students can access their subjects and initiate or respond to interactions with the

teacher and their fellow students whenever it becomes convenient for them. In this learning,

teachers can provide a recorded video of them discussing their lesson and post or share it on

their social media accounts such as Facebook, Messenger, and Tiktok. Teachers can edit it base

on their liking with various filters, pictures, videos, or PowerPoint presentations even in just a

minute or so.
