INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the introduction, statement of the problem, scope and delimitation,

significance of the study, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, research hypothesis and

Definition of terms.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Digital technology and social media have evolved to become a part of our daily life more

lately than in the past. This daily use of digital technology and social networking is now easier

than ever thanks to the recent increase in smartphone owners. Technology plays an important

role in society today (Allen, 2019).Digital devices have made life in the 21st century seem

simple, allowing us to successfully connect on various social media platforms.

For many people, social media is a big online platform that may support their daily lives.

These days, social media is a technology that is gaining a lot of popularity due to its user-friendly

features. Social media facilitates and speeds up human connection significantly compared to in

person interactions, promotes globalization, allows introverted people to express themselves, and

helps people connect internationally for both social and business reasons.

According to the analysis by Kepios, in October 2022, there we are 4.74 billion social

media users worldwide, or 59.3 percent of the entire world's population. The emergence of social

media has created a new avenue for facilitating daily information and communication needs

(Bhamare, 2020). Utilizing social media for various forms of communication makes it easier to
connect with others and exchange information with them. Social media is indeed having a

gradual but noticeable effect on how people live and interact with one another.

People are quite conscious of how crucial communication is in their lives and how it is

the lifeblood of living. Technically speaking, communication is more than just exchanging

information. It aids in establishing relationships with others in addition to exchanging

information and knowledge. Being able to convey information clearly, precisely, and as expected

is a crucial life skill that shouldn't be undervalued (Bequiri, 2017). By acquiring these skills, you

can improve your relationships with others, develop stronger levels of respect and trust, and

improve your social and communicative health in general.

In the eyes of students, particularly Grade 12 ACLC Naga students, social media plays a

significant role and serves as a means of communication. They communicate with their teachers

and classmates through social media. Additionally, social media usage may help people learn

effective communication techniques. A new method of promoting daily knowledge and

connectivity requirements has been made possible by the rise of social media. Alternatively, as

stated, communication skills are a crucial tool for people to effectively convey or receive

messages and information in a simple and clear manner. Additionally, improving

communications skills can benefit all part of life, including work, social interactions, and

everything in between (SkillYouNeed, 2020).

The researchers aim to determine the impacts of social media in terms of Grade 12

students’ communication skills. Hence the study intends to determine the communications skills

and social media usage of Grade 12 ACLC Naga students.

Statement of the problem

This study will determine how social media usage affects the communication skills of

Grade 12 students of ACLC Naga. Specifically, the study aimed to provide answer to the

4. What are the impacts of social media usage to the respondent in terms of effective

communication skills?

Scope and the Delimitation

This study concentrates on the impacts of social media usage on the communications

skills among ACLC Naga Grade 12 students. The researchers will create survey questions to

gather the data required to address the research question. The respondents for this study will

primarily be Grade 12 students from several strands at ACLC Naga Senior High. The survey will

be conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2022-2023. The generalization of

the research findings is limited to Grade 12 ACLC Naga students only, due to the focus on this
specific group. The results of this study cannot be generalized to other schools or student

populations as there may be differences in social media usage patterns and communication skill

development among different groups. Student visual communication skills are not covered by the

study.

Significance of the Study

administrators and educators with insights on how social media use affects communication skills

development among students. This knowledge can guide them in developing programs and

policies that promote responsible social media use while also enhancing students' communication

skills.

ACLC Naga Grade 12 students. The study's findings will allow students to understand

the potential negative effects of excessive social media use on their communication skills. This

knowledge can encourage them to use social media platforms more responsibly, leading to

improved communication skills.

Future researchers. The research study provides future researchers with a reference

point for their work on the relationship between social media use and communication skills

development among students. They can build on this study's findings to explore other important

areas that have not been explored

Theoretical Framework.

The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life

by Erving Goffman (1959)

The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life by Erving Goffman (1959) is used in this research to

explore the impact of social media usage on communication skills among ACLC Naga Grade 12

students. Goffman's theory suggests that individuals present themselves in different ways when

interacting with others to leave a particular impression.

Social media serves as a stage for users to perform and take on multiple roles. In this

context, individuals engage in self-presentation and impression management to curate their

online personas and interact with others. Goffman's theory offers insight into how social media

users can shape the definition of their online interactions and the impression they leave on others.

The framework helps in analyzing the impact of social media on communication skills as

it provides a basis for analyzing the self-presentation strategies employed by social media users.

Goffman's theory is relevant to understanding how social media use impacts the communication

skills of ACLC Naga Grade 12 students. Therefore, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life

provides a valuable lens for examining the ways in which social media shapes individuals' self-

presentation and communication strategies.

Definition of Terms

Communication. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is a process by which

information is exchanged through a common system of symbols, signs, or actions between

people. Thus, can be defined as understanding and sharing meaning (Bequiri, 2017). In this

study, it is the process of exchanging information and conveying meaning through a variety of

verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills, both online and offline. It includes the

ability to listen actively, speak clearly and effectively, interpret and convey nonverbal cues, and

use appropriate written language and tone.

Communication Skills. Is essential in order to rapidly and accurately deliver and interpret data.

Being able to communicate easily is a crucial ability in life and should not be ignored (Bequiri,

2017). In this study, it refers to the ability to effectively convey and interpret information and

ideas through verbal, non-verbal, and written means, while considering the context, audience,

and purpose of the communication.

Social Media Platform. Known as the lovechild of the World Wide Web which comes in many

forms such as blogs, forum, photo-sharing, social gaming, chat apps, and social networks

(Clement, 2020). Specifically, those are Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, Instagram and a
lot more. In this study, it is used to determine the social media platforms that the respondents

use.

Technology and Social Media

Technology is a gift from God. After the gift of life, it is perhaps the greatest gift from

God. She is the mother of civilizations, the arts, and the sciences. Technology has certainly

changed the way we live. It has influenced various facets of life and redefined living.

Technology undoubtedly plays an important role in all areas of life. Thanks to technology,

several manual tasks can be automated. Many complex and critical processes can also be carried

out more easily and efficiently with the help of modern technology. Thanks to the application of

technology, life has changed, and it has changed for the better. Technology has revolutionized

education. The importance of technology in schools cannot be ignored. In fact, with the advent of

computers in education, it has become easier for teachers to impart knowledge and for students

to acquire it. The use of technology has made the process of teaching and learning all the more

enjoyable. (Raja & Nagasubramani, 2018)

According to Tatili et al. (2016), technology has clearly had a significant impact on every

part of our lives, including today’s learning environments. It is influencing how students learn,

how teachers deliver material, and how we construct places for future learning opportunities.

Schools are claimed to be investing in more than simply computer terminals and keyboards, and

based on our planning and design work, we can see that they are swiftly embracing the

"continuous touch" trends that have revolutionized our global culture. As technology advances, it

creates new opportunities and problems for educators and students. Social networking is an

excellent example of a technology that, depending on how it is utilized, can either aid or hinder

education.

Among the popular social media platforms, Instagram is used by millions of people every

day especially by the young adults. Social media platforms have been employed for educational

purposes as a result of this significance. According to the achievement scores from research

study of Ali Erarslan(2019), Instagram had a beneficial effect on pupils’ language learning. The

study’s findings support the idea that by exposing students to language as they use Instagram as

part of their regular routines, Instagram can be utilized to improve English learning in addition to

formal instruction.

Facebook is one of the most widely used websites online, according to Brailovskaia and

Margraf (2016), who estimate that over one billion individuals utilize it as a medium for social

interaction and self-presentation. The purpose of the current study was to look into differences

between Facebook users and non-users in terms of a variety of personality traits and mental

health indicators. Data from 790 Facebook users and 155 non-users totaling 945 individuals were

gathered. The results show that Facebook users significantly outperform Facebook non-users in

the areas of narcissism, self-esteem, and extraversion. LinkedIn’s user interface is tailored to the
requirement for professional self-promotion, in contrast to Facebook, which is primarily focused

on assisting personal self-presentation. Despite this, both systems use similar connectivity and

storytelling methods, which have recently been made clear by improvements to the user

interface.

Hopkins (2020), the world is getting smaller with the use of technology such as social

media. No wonder the widespread use of social media shares thoughts, personal and professional

stories, and interactions, which has had a significant impact on how people generally

communicate today (University of the People, n.d.). It is believed to have a negative impact on

social skills and communication among adolescents.

Heyam (2014) states that social media has become the fastest growing web application in

the 21st century due to the technological advancements that have taken place. Social media

platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn have witnessed an enormous

increase in users over the past decade. This growth is a result of the ease of access and

connectivity that social media provides, making it an essential tool for communication,

networking, and marketing. The proliferation of mobile devices has also contributed significantly

to the rise of social media, as users can access these platforms from anywhere and at any time. In

conclusion, the growth of social media is likely to continue in the coming years, fueled by

technological advancements and an increasingly connected world. Social media has been

identified as an effective educational tool for students, with the potential to improve academic

performance and communication skills.

Bruce (2020) argues that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter can help

students share information, collaborate with peers, and access learning resources, leading to
better academic outcomes. Moreover, social media can improve students' writing skills by

encouraging them to express their thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise manner, while also

developing their social skills through online discussions and interactions. These findings suggest

that social media can be a valuable resource for educators seeking to create engaging and

collaborative learning environments that promote knowledge acquisition and skill development

among students.

Communication Skills

The word “communication” is derived from the Latin word “communi,” which means

“the same,” and the English word “communicatio.” Here, the same means the same thing.

Therefore, communication is the exchange of information between two parties, but the

information that is exchanged must be clear to both parties. (Brown in Brahmaiah and Demudu,

2016)

According to Sampathirao (2016), a preference for technological communication

(internet and social media) was substantially connected with having low social skills and a high

level of social anxiety, whereas youth who used technology less were shown to have excellent

social skills. The fact that social media truly promotes and fosters the development of social

skills is one of the “benefits” repeatedly promoted by experts in a variety of sectors. A stronger

restriction on technology use in youth was associated with high social skills in college, but a

preference for technological communication (internet and social media) was substantially tied

with poor social skills and high social anxiety.

Subramanian (2017), on the other hand, connected social media’s effects to verbal ability

in interpersonal communication. He claims that in a culture where interacting and oversharing

online is the norm, you are probably more inclined to communicate with friends and family over

mobile devices than in person. Social networks have eliminated barriers to contact and

connection, enabling people to express their opinions and thoughts on a range of topics. The

ability to connect with and interact with people who share their interests allows for the exchange

of advice and opinions on a variety of topics by students, experts, and others. The ability to unite

individuals to work together on a broad forum to achieve a specific objective is another

beneficial aspect of social networking sites. This is absolutely essential if we want to alter

society for the better.

Local Literature

According to Astodello R. (2016) Tabuk City, Kalinga – People around the world are

enjoying the benefits of using technology these days. In the past, communication and the free

exchange of ideas between people were limited by distance, race, and even religion. But now

these barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge because now the new

world of social networking allows free exchange of thoughts through online social networking

sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Filipinos were found to have the highest social media usage globally as per a report by

We Are Social and Hootsuite (ABS-CBN News, 2019). The report entitled "Digital 2019: Global

Digital Overview" indicated that Filipinos spend an average of 10 hours and 2 minutes daily on

the internet across any device, with more than 4 hours spent on social media platforms. As

reported by Inquirer.net (2018), a considerable number of Filipinos devote a substantial portion

of their time to utilizing their mobile devices and cellular phones to keep themselves updated.

They utilize their phones while doing various activities like walking, jogging, driving, eating,
reading, and even while sleeping. This overindulgence in internet use occasionally leads to

accidents.

Foreign Studies

Bakeer (2018) conducted a quantitative study to investigate the impact of social media

and ICTs on students' writing skills. The study used a survey questionnaire as a research

instrument to collect data from a sample of 150 students from various universities in Egypt. The

findings of the study showed that social media and ICTs have a positive impact on students'

writing skills. The students perceived social media as a useful tool for practicing writing skills

and improving their creativity. The study also revealed that social media could be used as a

platform for generating a positive learning environment and reinforcing other subjects. The

results of this study could be useful for educators who seek to integrate social media and ICTs

into their teaching practices and highlight the importance of using social media as a tool for

generating a positive learning environment and reinforcing other subjects.

In addition, Rahman and Salija (2016) conducted a quantitative study that investigated

Indonesian higher education students' perceptions of the use of social media in English teaching.

The study utilized a survey questionnaire as a research instrument, and the data was collected
from 384 students from five different universities in Indonesia. The study's findings showed that

the majority of the students had a positive attitude toward using social media in the English

teaching process and expressed a desire to use it to improve their writing skills. However, the

study also identified several potential barriers to the use of social media in the classroom, such as

large class sizes, a lack of internet training, and limited access to technology. These findings are

relevant to our study, which examines the impact of social media usage on students'

communication skills, as they provide insight into the attitudes of Indonesian higher education

students toward using social media as a learning tool. The study also highlights some of the

challenges that educators may face when implementing social media in the classroom.

Accordingly, Purcell, Buchanan, and Friedrich (2013) conducted a study that surveyed

2,462 advanced placement and national writing project teachers to investigate the influence of

digital technologies on student writing. The study employed a quantitative research design and

used a survey questionnaire as a research instrument. The results of the study revealed that

digital technologies, including social networking sites, cell phones, texting, and the internet, have

become valuable resources for teaching writing in middle and high schools. Educators reported

that these tools encourage students to write more frequently and in more diverse forms than

previous generations, while also broadening the audience for their written work. This study's

findings are relevant to our investigation of the impact of social media usage on students'

communication skills as it emphasizes the positive influence of digital technologies on student

writing and can provide insights into how social media can be utilized in writing instruction to

promote better communication skills among students.

In a phenomenological study, researchers explored the perceptions and experiences of

parents and machers regarding the use of social media for communication between schools and
families. Using a semi-structured interview form and content analysis, the study found that

WhatsApp and other social media platforms are commonly used for school-family

communication due to their convenience, speed, and cost-effectiveness. However, participants

also reported drawbacks such as miscommunication and privacy violations due to persistent and

inappropriate use. Recommendations included introducing time and content limits and expanding

the age of these tools, while urging users to stay focused and avoid deviating from their intended

goals. The study's relevance to our research was highlighted, emphasizing the importance of

responsible and effective use of social media platforms. (Kaban, Abdullatif 2021)

Qi, L., & Cong, Y. (2019) explained the link between social media use, group

communication, tie strength, and perceived group task performance: The moderating role of tie

strength in online social networking. International Journal of Information Management, 49, 347-

355. Using a cross-sectional design and a survey method, the study examined the relationship

between social media use and perceived group task performance among senior-level business

students. The study found that social media use was positively associated with group

communication, which, in turn, was positively associated with perceived group task

performance. However, the study also revealed that tie strength negatively moderated the

relationship between social media use and group communication. This research contributes to

our understanding of the impact of social media use on communication skills and highlights the

importance of tie strength in online social networking.

Local Studies

The study conducted by Camus (2018), which analyzed social media usage in 40

countries, including the Philippines, found that the country had the highest social media usage in
the world, with 67 million Facebook accounts and 10 million Instagram users. Additionally,

Filipinos spent an average of 9 hours and 29 minutes a day on the internet, with more than half of

the population (61 million) accessing it through their mobile devices. Although the study did not

directly investigate the impact of social media on communication skills, it provides valuable

insights into the prevalence of social media usage in the country, highlighting the need for

further research in this area. The study also underscores the importance of promoting responsible

social media use and digital literacy among students, given the significant role that social media

plays in their daily lives.

The study conducted by Gorra and Bhati (2016) utilized a descriptive survey design to

examine the use of technology in the classroom among students in state colleges and universities

in the Caraga region of the Philippines. The researchers collected data from a sample of 385

students using a self-administered questionnaire that aimed to determine the frequency and

purpose of technology use in the classroom, as well as its impact on learning outcomes. The

study found that most students in state colleges and universities in the Caraga region of the

Philippines use technology in the classroom for the purpose of positive outcomes and that

technology use is significantly related to enhanced learning-related activities in the classroom.

This study is related to our study about the impact of social media usage on communication skills

of students as both studies aim to explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of technology use

in education, although our study focuses on a specific type of technology and its impact on a

particular skill.

Velasco (2020) conducted a quantitative study to identify the topics of millennials’ social

media posts from Metro Manila, Philippines, using QDA-assisted thematic content analysis. The

study aimed to identify the themes related to culture, social interactions, and work. A sample of
5,000 social media posts was used to identify the most frequently shared topics by millennials,

who are often referred to as digital natives. The findings of the study indicated that the most

common social media posts shared by participants were those related to the self, specifically self-

disclosures and selfies, in terms of culture. The study also revealed that the major themes of the

millennials’ social media posts in Metro Manila, Philippines were culture, social interactions,

and work. This study is relevant to our research about the impact of social media usage on

communication skills of students as it sheds light on the topics discussed by millennials on social

media, which may have implications for their communication skills. Understanding these topics

can be helpful in designing interventions to promote responsible social media usage and improve

communication skills among students.

Synthesis of the Art

Based on the related literature and studies, technology and social media have had a

significant impact on education and communication skills. With the advent of computers and the

internet, it has become easier for teachers to impart knowledge and for students to acquire it.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have been employed for educational

purposes, and studies have shown that they can have a beneficial effect on students' language

learning, writing skills, and academic performance. However, social media has also been linked

to negative effects on social skills and communication among adolescents. In terms of

communication skills, technology has provided new channels and methods for communication,

but it also requires clear and concise messaging to be effective. Overall, technology and social

media have revolutionized the way we learn and communicate, with both positive and negative

impacts. The study conducted by Purcell, Buchanan, and Friedrich (2013) is the most relevant to

our study about impact of social media usage on the communication skills of Grade 12 students
at ACLC Naga. It explores the influence of digital technologies, including social media, on

student writing and emphasizes their positive effects on student writing, which can have a

significant impact on their communication skills. The study suggests that social media can be a

valuable resource for teaching writing, encouraging students to write more frequently and in

more diverse forms. As communication skills involve writing and expressing oneself clearly and

effectively, this study's findings can provide valuable insights into how social media can be

utilized to promote better communication skills among Grade 12 students at ACLC Naga.
CHAPTER III

METHIODOLOGY

Research Design

The objective of this study is to use quantitative research to determine the impact of

social media use on the communication skills of ACLC Naga students in the 12th grade. The

researcher selected to use a quantitative research design for several reasons. Firstly, quantitative

methods allow for the measurement and quantification of the impact of social media usage on

communication skills in a numerical way. This enables us to conduct statistical analysis and

identify specific patterns and relationships within the data. Secondly, the use of standardized

instruments ensures that our results are objective and minimize subjective bias. This enhances

the credibility and reliability of our study. Thirdly, the use of a representative sample allows for

generalizability, as we can draw conclusions that are applicable to the entire population of ACLC

Naga grade 12 students.

Research Locale

This research will be conducted at the AMA Computer Learning Center Naga, Ellias

Angeles Avenue, Naga City. Specifically, it will be confined to the selected Grade 12 students of

the said school. ACLC Naga is a suitable research locale for our study as it is a highly reputable

academic institution, known for its quality education and diverse student population.

Additionally, ACLC Naga offers grade 12 programs that are highly relevant to our research

topic, as this is the grade level when students are preparing to enter college or the workforce. The

research locale will provide us with a representative sample of students who come from diverse

socio-economic backgrounds and who use social media extensively in their daily lives. By
conducting our study in this locale, we can obtain accurate and reliable data that can inform

strategies to improve communication skills among students in the city.
