The role of Nurse Leader based on transformational leadership theory

Transformational leadership theory is based on the idea that leaders can influence

people and that their identities, beliefs, and perceptions about their world can be changed.

The basic concept of transformational leadership is that leaders create an environment where

followers can take on new behaviors. Nurse leaders are responsible for ensuring a safe,

effective, and productive clinical practice environment that serves the needs of patients and

families (Collins et al., 2020). Through a transformational leadership theory, they lead the

change necessary to meet these needs. Nurse leaders can help transform the healthcare

environment by inspiring, leading, and empowering their teams to take action. They are

responsible for educating faculty and staff members on best practices in clinical care

management and patient-centered care while guiding them at every level of their work.

Nurse leaders also help guide faculty and staff members through complex healthcare

issues by providing insight, knowledge, and direction (Collins et al., 2020). By supporting

them in these roles, nurse leaders can help individuals become more knowledgeable about

current healthcare trends that influence patient outcomes. While using the transformational

leadership theory as a nurse leader in a healthcare organization, it is important to have an

individualized plan that will help develop a transformation. The following is an

individualized plan that can help in promoting and developing the model. An individualized

plan will entail six action steps to establishing myself as a nurse leader, a working template to

help me build on those actions and connect with other leaders in the healthcare organization,

and a sustainability plan that will help me maintain momentum after every six months. This

six-month leadership plan will help you take the next step in your development as a nurse

leader, and embracing this plan will help develop a transformational leadership theory.
3

Supporting my Individualized Plan

The six actionable plans include embracing change, encouraging the spirit of

willingness, learning how to manage the team, effective communication, collaboration, and

cooperation (Ferreira et al. 2020). As a nurse leader, I can lead by embracing change and

learning from others, and I also have to surround myself with strong people willing to

produce quality results for the organization. To establish myself as a nurse leader who can

bring transformational leadership, I need to learn how to manage my team so everyone feels

valued, respected, and supported. This includes communicating with different personalities

and having productive conversations that promote collaboration and cooperation. According

to Ferreira et al. (2020), one should practice facilitation skills through role-plays, feedback on

performance, and follow-up on advanced skills needed to grow as a leader. Building

relationships with other leaders by sponsoring learning opportunities together in a healthcare

organization can help promote the development of transformation.

As a nurse leader, documenting formal training experiences in my resume or

professional activity statement will help promote transformation. To ensure that these

experiences significantly impact my life and workplace, I can ensure engagement by the

organization outside of my formal learning and training programs. To ensure that the

transformational model incorporates patient roles. Patients have a role in helping bring

transformation in a healthcare environment (Ferreira et al. 2020). To promote change,

patients must be allowed to share their opinions on what should be improved to help realize

quality patient outcomes. Clearly defining the role of patients is crucial in helping to develop

the transformational model.

Ways of transforming bedside Nursing

As a nurse leader, I can transform bedside nursing by working with the clinical team

to establish a process for patient care, communication, and leadership. The process will be
4

supported by an evidence-based protocol based on best practices that consider my team's

cultural and professional diversity. By providing this support at the start of my journey, new

processes and protocols can be built upon, resulting in seamless transitions from patient care

to handover (Abbas et al. 2019). I can also create an inclusive environment that fosters care

and compassion, engages team members in integrating healthcare information, and improves

communication. By developing a vision for the future of patient experience, I can influence

nurses to transform bedside nursing to meet the needs of patients and the health care system.

As a nurse leader, I can transform the role of nurse leader and patient advocate by ensuring

that patient-centered care is at the core of my practice, including assessments and

interventions.

The importance of the transformational leadership theory in

Communication and Collaboration

A key element in any transformational leadership approach is effective

communication. This is not an easy task, but it is necessary if a leader is to achieve their goals

(Robbins & Davidhizar 2020). One way to promote effective communication is to use the

transformational leadership theory's five commitment elements. These are consistency,

readiness to change, self-delegation, transparency, and feedback for results. The

transformational leadership theory will help promote communication and collaboration with

the entire healthcare team by creating a strategy that guides each healthcare team member to

complete their tasks successfully. This is done by assigning roles, developing goals and

objectives, and providing feedback so they can explore their communication skills to engage

with others effectively. Additionally, the transformational leadership theory provides a

framework that helps manage the many complexities of hospital operations. It gives nurses,

nurse leaders, and management a common language for discussing important issues.
5

Transformational leadership theory helps in communication between nurses, ensuring

they attain their collective goals of ensuring quality. When professionals are highly engaged,

an organization develops a sense of value and appreciation for their efforts. Communication

is vital in transformation leadership as it plays a role in giving constructive feedback while at

the same time promoting professional growth and development.

According to Tian et al. (2020), one of the elements of transformational leadership

theory is fostering intellectual stimulation, which entails giving employees a safe

environment to have open conversations and voice their different perspectives. Doing this

ensures that employees can ask questions while practicing a significant amount of autonomy

which is a vital component of effective communication. Transformational leadership theory is

also focused on the ability of leaders and administrators to develop strategic messages and

organized thoughts, which allows them to develop solutions and efforts that promote

effective communication in the workplace. Another element of the transformative theory is

the ideal influence, which primarily concerns seeking new opportunities and employee

empowerment, including a conversation about beliefs and values. This form of

communication between different employees not only results in developing a shared vision

but it also results in achieving the overall goals of the healthcare organization.

Collaboration is the core of nursing transformational leadership theory since it is

based on healthcare staff working together for a similar goal in organizations of ensuring

quality delivery of care. This also means that leaders should create a collaborative

environment in healthcare organizations to accomplish this goal. Thus, transformational

leadership advocates for employees to work as interdisciplinary teams or ensures that each

staff sees how their daily work contributes to the more significant healthcare organization's

goals.
6

Structure, process, and outcomes related to the assessment of care and accreditation

Transformational leadership theory has been used to measure healthcare

organizations' compliance and quality of care. The transformational approach addresses the

importance of the relationship between leaders and followers and can be a valuable tool when

assessing an organization's compliance (Moon et al., 2019). One can better understand how

these principles can help transform healthcare organizations by examining transformational

leadership theory. The theory helps identify leadership weaknesses, which may lead to

improved quality of care. Accreditation actions are easier to implement when the healthcare

organization recognizes the need for change and implements those changes accordingly.

In addition, transformational leadership's four elements motivate the employees to

work beyond their interests to benefit the whole professional teams. This results in better

quality care and patient outcomes, which are essential for accreditation. Transformational

leadership theory is also predicted to affect the health personnel environment positively. For

example, good communication and collaboration result in shared work which minimizes

burnout in workers. Reducing the risk of burnout results in better care since the employees

will work at their best optimum, improving the working process (Seljemo et al., 2020).

Transformational leadership in nursing also improves processes, resulting in improved

productivity. Accreditations organizations recognize aspects such as quality care and better

patient outcomes: thus, by implementing transformational leadership theory, the leaders will

promote these essential aspects, which are vital in getting the requisite accreditation.

My Future Goals as a Nurse Leader

7

The future of nursing is bright, and I want to be a part of it. I aim to start a new era of

nursing leadership where I can build on my passion for change and become a leader who

motivates others toward their goals and dreams. My role would be to ensure that quality

measures are met and evidence-based care is delivered, leading high-performing teams to

improve patient satisfaction and safety. I will use the transformation leadership theory to

collaborate with other nurses to achieve a common goal. I also aim to use transformative

leadership to set clear goals in my organization while collaborating with the rest of the

healthcare providers to ensure we achieve the overall goals of quality care. As a nurse leader,

I will ensure that I adopt transformational leadership and enhance the general culture of my

organization by adding programs, implementing strategies that work toward the improvement

of patients’ outcomes, and ensuring safety. I also plan to implement transformational

leadership during my advocacy actions. As a transformational leader, I will strive to promote

teamwork, encourage positive esteem among the staff, and empower the team to become

involved with the healthcare organizational policies and procedures implementation.

I will therefore ensure that I support, motivate and inspire my team members always

to do their best, which is vital in improving the healthcare sector. By ensuring that I act as a

staff advocate, I will also establish mutual trust, leading to better job satisfaction. Employees

who are satisfied at work have low turnover rates, which can strongly reduce patient errors

and, thus, improve patient outcomes. By adopting transformational leadership, I will also

ensure that I provide support and recognition of my employees' efforts, get them to see

beyond their interests, encourage them and provide support and recognition.

Transformational leadership theory promotes open communication supports positive change

and empowers employees through shared decision-making. These are the attributes I want to

display when I become a nurse leader. I also want the employees to feel they can challenge

the processes they are not content with. Doing that will ensure that employees feel their voice
8

is valued and respected, ultimately creating a sustainable and productive work environment.

Therefore, I want to significantly impact how health care is delivered, creating opportunities

that improve patient care while sustaining high-quality outcomes.
