Mrs. Piatt's MS Art Syllabus
Below is a summary of information that will be helpful to both students and parents throughout the school
year. Please review the following Visual Arts information together, sign where indicated and return the
signature portion of the form as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
PURPOSE The purpose of this course is to develop competence in: (a) the elements of art/principles of
design, (b) a variety of art mediums/materials and their safe use/handling, (c) creative problem-solving (d) art
terminology/art periods/art movements, and (e) independent/collaborative participation skills.
RULES AND CONSEQUENCES-All rules set forth in the Mahaffey Middle School’ Student Handbook will be
enforced and any violations of zero tolerance, i.e. fighting, bullying, weapons, defacing of government
property/art supplies etc. will result in administrative referrals. Additional rules that will be applicable in the
visual arts class shall be as follows:
CLASS RULES
1. Listen and follow directions 7. DO NOT leave class w/o permission
REQUIRED VISUAL ARTS MATERIAL: Having the supplies necessary to participate in each art project is
important. This also ensures the timely start of assignments. Each student should bring the following items:
*Pencils and Erasure – Students should bring at least two pencils to art class each day and at least one erasure.
I would recommend at least one of the two be a standard #2 pencil for the practice of drawing techniques
(shading/blending). For those students who like a fine tip pencil; I would recommend a mechanical pencil for
the second.
*Sharpie Marker – Some students like to outline their drawings, depending on the assignment. A thin line
sharpie is recommended but not required.
Folder – This is to keep any handouts given in class or paper assignments (quiz, writing activity, notes, etc.)
● *Pencils and erasures can be borrowed if a student forgets theirs periodically. The borrowing of these items should not take
the place of coming prepared with your own supplies.
● *Sharpie Thin Line Markers are not always available to borrow. Students that like to use these (when appropriate) should
supply their own.
ALL OTHER SUPPLIES WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THE SHARED USE OF ALL STUDENTS TAKING ART DURING THE
SEMESTER.
HOMEWORK: Each student will be enrolled in Google Classroom to support in-class activities. Google
assignments/materials will be posted according to the project (when it applies). These assignments should be
submitted through the Google classroom. In the case of school/ class absences or school closures, this
platform will provide make-up work and remote learning. Homework is the student’s responsibility and there
will be a penalty for late or missing homework.
STUDENT ABSENCES/ DOCTOR NOTES: Make up work is the student’s responsibility. If you are absent,
the student is responsible for the projects, notes, handouts, and/or assessments that may have been missed.
Any injury/ illness that impacts a student’s ability to participate in class activities requires a written doctor
note. Notes need to specify the length of time for recovery and the restricted activities. Long-term injuries may
necessitate alternative assignments.
DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS will be taken for failure to comply with class/school rules or participation in class
assignments/activities.
• FIRST TIME=WARNING • SECOND TIME= TEACHER TO STUDENT COUNSELLING ABOUT THE BEHAVIOR
GRADES are updated weekly with progress grades on large art projects and for class activities/quizzes; grades
will be posted within a week of the due date. I encourage regular monitoring of Aspen to check on your
student’s progress in the class.
