Hydraulic Control - Exam - 2020 - Written Exam

This document is an exam for a Hydraulic Control course taken at Mansoura University. It contains 4 questions assessing the student's knowledge of hydraulic components, circuits, and system design. Question 1 involves sketching fluid power applications, a vane motor, and pressure relief/reducing valves. Question 2 covers check valves, relief valves, directional valves, accumulators, and pump selection criteria. Question 3 involves sizing cylinders and calculating speeds/pressures for a double-acting cylinder circuit. Mansoura University 4th Year Mech. Power Eng.

Faculty of Engineering May 2020 - 12 July 2020

Mechanical Power Eng. Dept. Exam Type: Final
Course Title: Hydraulic Control Time: 110 Minutes
Course Code: MPE 4424 Full Mark: 90

Closed Book Examination. Assume any Missing Data.

Answer the Following Questions:

________________________________________________________

(1) (a) Sketch three fluid power applications for each of the linear and limited
rotation actuators. [9 Marks]

(b) Sketch a vane motor and explain briefly its working principle. [5 Marks]

(c) Compare between the pressure relief valve and pressure reducing valve.
Draw the construction and symbol of each valve. [6 Marks]

(2) (a) Explain the purpose of the following valves and sketch two of them and
their hydraulic symbols:
Check valve – Pilot operated relief valve – Brake valve – Rotary
directional valve. [9 Marks]

(b) List the functions of accumulator in hydraulic circuit? Sketch two circuits
of them. [6 Marks]

(c) List out any five criteria for selection of hydraulic pump in hydraulic system. [5 Marks]
(d) A cylinder has to exert a forward thrust of
100 kN and a reverse thrust of 10 kN. The
retract speed should be approximately
5 m/min utilizing full pump flow and the
extend speed is 0.5 m/min. Assume that the
maximum pump pressure is 160 bar and the
pressure drops over the following
components and their associated pipe work
(where they are used):
Filter = 3 bar
Directional valve (each flow path) =
2 bar
Flow control valve (controlled flow) =
10 bar
Flow control valve (check valve) = 3 bar
The 'Meter-out' flow control is used,
determine:
(a) The cylinder size (assume 2:1 ratio
piston rod area), [4 Marks]
(b) The pump size, and [3 Marks]
(c) The circuit efficiency. [3 Marks]

(3) Two double-acting cylinders operate in
synchronization by hooking them in series. The
load on the first cylinder (F1) is 90 kN and that on
the second cylinder (F2) is 60 kN. The load on each
cylinder during the extend and retract strokes
remains constant. The piston area of the first
cylinder is 120 cm2 and both cylinders have piston-
to-rod area ratio 2:1. A fixed displacement axial-
piston pump of an output flow 0.002 m3/s is used to
operate the system. The pump speed is 3600 rpm,
and its volumetric and mechanical efficiencies are
90% and 93%, respectively. Determine:
(a) The piston diameter of the second cylinder, [10 Marks]
(b) The extend speed, [3 Marks]
(c) The pressure on the piston of the first cylinder during the extend stroke, [3 Marks]
(d) The power of the pump during the extend stroke, and [2 Marks]
(e) The system efficiency during the extend stroke. [2 Marks]

(4) A simplified diagram of a hydrostatic transmission

system of a working vehicle is shown. In the both
sides of the vehicle, the two fixed displacement
motors driving the rubber tired wheels are
connected in series. The two sets of series
connected motors are supplied by fixed
displacement pumps whose shafts are rotated by a
diesel engine. The leaks of the motors are fully
external. F1 and F2 are the driving forces, and d1
and d2 are the diameters of the wheels. Show that:
(a) The hydraulic motor speeds (r.p.m.) can
be expressed as:
C
N m 1 = ηvp .ηvm 1.N p . p ,
C m1
Cp
N m 2 = ηvp .ηvm 1.ηvm 2 .N p .
Cm2
where η vp , ηvm 1 and ηvm 2 are the volumetric efficiencies of pump, motor 1 and
motor 2, N p the pump speed (r.p.m.), and C p , C m 1 and C m 2 the pump, motor 1
and motor 2 capacities per revolution. [10 Marks]
(b) The pump displacement Q p if the required speed of working vehicle is V is:
60 V C m1 60 V Cm2
Qp = = [6 Marks]
π ηvp ηvm 1 d 1 π ηvp ηvm 1 ηvm 2 d 2
(c) The required pump shaft power can be expressed as:
π  F1d 1 N m 1 F2 d 2 N m 2 
Pp =  + 
120ηovp  ηovm 1 ηvm 1ηovm 2 
where ηovp , ηovm 1 and ηovm 2 are the overall efficiencies of pump, motor 1 and
motor 2. [4 Marks]
