1. Indonesia has signed some Free trade agreement with


some countries in Asia. Do you think that this decision
is beneficial for Indonesia economic? Explain your

2. Inflation is a measure of the rate of rising prices of
goods and services in an economy. Although it can
have a negative impact on society it also can give
benefit to some people. Who are they? Why?

Answer

The Asean Free Trade Area (AFTA) is an agreement between Southeast


Asian countries in the economic sector to improve the economic welfare of it
member. AFTA is a form of policy regarding an agreement between ASEAN
countries to establish a free trade zone. AFTA was formed on 28 January 1992, at
the 4th ASEAN Summit in Singapore. The formation of AFTA was motivated by
economic developments in each ASEAN countries which was then facilitated by a
form of AFTA agreement, in the context of advancing the economy in ASEAN by
reducing tariffs and removing a non-tariff barrier in international trade which began
in 2002. The latest developments in AFTA is marked by an agreement to abolish
all import duties from imported goods between member.

The objectives of establishing AFTA are:

1. AFTA aims to make the ASEAN region a competitive place of production.


So as to make ASEAN products have strong competitiveness in the global
market.
2. Improving economic competitiveness among ASEAN countries, by making
ASEAN a destination for the world market.
3. Attract foreign investors to ASEAN to increase trade among ASEAN
members.
4. Eliminating export and import tax fees for countries belonging to ASEAN
members.
As a member of AFTA, it has had several positive impacts on the Indonesian
economic, such as:

1. Give an opportunity for small and medium-sized business to export their


products at competitive price with larga sized manufacturer.
2. Provide opportunities for Indonesia to export competitive commodities in the
ASEAN market. Indonesia's had lot of raw material commodities that can
compete with other countries, such as palm oil, rubber, cocoa, and coffee
which are materials that are in great demand by ASEAN countries and
abroad.
3. Increase competitiveness to encourage economic development. AFTA also
expected to be able to raise the awareness of entrepreneurs or business
industries to become more competitive, by producing better quality goods.
