Jose Rizal left the Philippines for Spain in 1882 without his family's approval, except for his brother and uncle. He traveled through several countries in Asia and Europe before arriving in Spain. In Madrid, he studied medicine, philosophy, languages, painting, sculpture, shooting and fencing. He befriended reformists and joined a secret society. Rizal was an avid reader and supported Filipino artists in Spain. In 1884, he completed his studies in medicine and philosophy but did not obtain a doctorate, allowing him to practice but not teach medicine.

FIRST TRIP TO EUROPE

May 3, 1882 – Jose Rizal secured an endorsement from Pedro Paterno and left for

Spain without the blessing of his family except for his brother Paciano and his uncle,

Antonio Rivera because he knew that his parents would never approve of his plan.

He first stopped in Singapore; Colombo, Shri Lanka; Aden, Yemen; cross the entire

Suez Canal; landed at Port Said, Egypt; Naples, Italy, and disembarked in Marseilles, France.

 He went to the venue of Alexandre Drama’s novel, The Count of Monte Cristo in

Chateau d’lf.

 He boarded to Portbou, France, and noticed the indifference of the Spanish

immigration officers compared to their courteous counterparts.

 Jose Rizal stopped in Barcelona and noticed the indifference among people. People

are enjoying freedom and liberalism.

 Some essays written by Rizal for Diariong Tagalog where he used the pen name,

“Laong Laan:

a. Amor Patrio (Love of Country) - The first essay of Rizal.

b. Los Viajes (Travels).

c. Revista de Madrid (Review of Madrid).

Universidad Central de Madrid – On November 3, 1882, Jose Rizal enrolled in (1)

Medicine and (2) Philosophy and Letters.

Academy of San Carlos – Jose Rizal took courses in (1) Painting & Sculpture, and (2)

Languages, namely, French, German, and English.

Hall of Sanz and Carbonell – Jose Rizal took private courses in shooting and fencing.
Important People he met:
 Dr. Miguel Morayta – An advocate of freedom and self-determination. Students

from South Africa hailed him as their champion.

 Don Pablo Ortega y Rey – A Spanish Liberal who used to live in the Philippines.

Circulo Hispano Filipino

 A social organization where its members were mostly the elder Filipinos who were

also the exiles of 1872 and talked about the needed reforms in the Philippines.

 It held informal programs which included poetry readings and debates.

Joining of Rizal to Freemasonry


 It was an organization whose beliefs are contrary to the doctrines of the Church,

hence, outlawed by the Catholic Church.

 Masonry attacked the Church because they believed it promoted religious

superstition and obscurantism, hiding the truth behind the veil of religion.

 Through the light of reason and universal brotherhood of men, knowledge can be

achieved, was a view of the mason.

 Rizal became a member with his masonic name “Dimasalang” and adopted the

masonic view.

Rizal was an avid book collector. He economized food and clothes and bought books.

The following are important books he collected:

• Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

• Works of Alexandre Dumas

• The Wandering Jew by Eugene Sue

• Lives of the Presidents of the United States from George Washington to Andrew

Johnson

• The Complete Works of Horace (3 Volumes)


June 25, 1884

 Filipino painters joined the national Exposition of Fine Arts in Madrid where Juan

Luna won the Gold Prize for “Spoliarium” and the second prize was awarded to

Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo for his painting “Virgines Christianas Expuestas al

Populacho” (Christian Virgins Exposed to the Population).

 Rizal gave a speech and was published in the newspaper, El Liberal, and reached

the Philippines where some were not pleased with this development.

 In Rizal’s speech, he emphasized to the public audience that the two Filipino winners

were the pride of the country; that genius has no country and their awards were

both products of Spain the and Philippines. He also voiced in his speech the hope

that someday reforms needed by the Filipinos will grant by Spain.

Completion of Rizal’s Studies


 On June 21, 1884, he completed Licenciado en Medicina, however, he did not have

his Doctorate in Medicine because he did not present the thesis required for

graduation. Thus, he can practice medicine but cannot teach medicine.

 He also obtained the degree in Licenciado en Filosofia y letras with the rating of

“Sobresaliente.”
