b. Analysis
WHAT IS INFINITIVE?
A verbal is a word formed from a verb but functioning as a different part of speech.
A verbal consisting of the word “to” plus a verb (in its simplest form “base form”) and functioning as a
noun, adjective, and adverb.

HOW IS INFINITIVE FORMED?

An infinitive is a verbal formed by placing to in front of a verb (in its simplest "base" form).
Examples:
to swim to think to read to cut to turn
NOTE:
Be sure not to confuse an infinitive—a verbal consisting of to plus a verb—with a prepositional phrase
beginning with to, which consists of to plus a noun or pronoun and any modifiers.
Infinitives: to fly, to draw, to become, to enter, to stand, to catch, to belong
Prepositional Phrases: to him, to the committee, to my house, to the mountains, to us, to this address

Read and analyze the following sentences.

1. I am going to swim tomorrow.
2. Sheila is going to think a new plan.
3. Carmen loves to read books.
Notice the sentences. What did you notice about the underlined words?

FUNCTION OF THE INFINITIVE IN THE SENTENCE

Although an infinitive is easy to locate because of the to + verb form, deciding what function it has in a
sentence can sometimes be confusing.
Keep in mind that though infinitives are verbs, they function differently from verbs, and instead, they act as a
noun, adjectives, or adverbs.

1. INFINITIVES AS NOUNS
Keep in mind that a noun can be a person, place, or thing. When used as a subject or direct object in
a sentence, an infinitive phrase acts as a noun. In such a case, the subject assumes the role of a
verb, whereas the direct object is the receiver of the action of a verb.

A NOUN THAT ACTS AS A DIRECT OBJECT

Example:
1. I like to watch movies alone.
a. Here “like” is the verb.
b. “To watch” is the infinitive as it receives the action of the verb (to be liked).
c. “To watch” acts as a direct object of the sentence.
Here, the infinitive acts as a noun that expresses a thought.
2. Everyone wanted to go. (noun-direct object)
3. He needs to concentrate on his studies.
4. Our family wants to open new stores in Digos City.

NOUN THAT ACTS AS A SUBJECT

1. To join hands with others is necessary.
In this sentence, “is” is the verb, and “to join” is the infinitive as it answers the question
about what is so necessary.?
Here the infinitive phrase “to join” is the subject of the sentence. This is an indication
that the infinitive acts as a noun in this example.
2. To wait seemed foolish when decisive action was required. (subject)
3. To go this late seems pointless.

NOUN THAT ACTS AS A SUBJECT COMPLEMENT

1. His ambition is to fly. (Subject complement)
In this sentence, the infinitive is, “to fly”, which gives additional information about the
subject, ambition.
Here the infinitive phrase “to fly” acts as the subject complement which usually comes
after a verb be (is, was, are, were, etc.)
This is an indication that the infinitive acts as a noun in this example.
2. My advice is to file a complaint at once.
3. His goal was to become a well-known writer.

2. INFINITIVES AS ADJECTIVES
An adjective is a word that describes more information about a noun. An infinitive act as an adjective if it
modifies or describes a noun in a sentence.
Example:
1. Joyce needs a table to read on.
Here “needs” is the verb, and “table” is the subject (noun).
“To read” is an infinitive, and it acts as an adjective.
2. I have a paper to write before class.
3. Roses are flowers to give to your loved ones.

3. INFINITIVES AS ADVERBS
An adverb is a word that modifies or describes an adjective, verb, or adverb. It provides additional
information regarding an adjective, verb, or adverb. At times, adverbs can answer the question “why.”
Example:
1. The mourners were surprised to hear that the deceased had been resurrected.
Here “to hear” is the infinitive. It gives additional information about the adjective “surprised.”
“To hear” is an infinitive and it acts as an adverb in the sentence.
2. We must study to learn.

c. Abstraction / Generalization
The teacher will ask the following question:
1. What is an infinitive?
2. How are infinitives formed?
3. What are the functions of infinitives?

d. Application
The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will provide an infinitive word. Use the
infinitive words in the formation of the sentence and underline it. They will write it using the table
and report it in front of their classmates.

First group
INFINITIVE WORDS SENTENCES
1.(Noun)
