Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750):

The Well-Tempered Clavier I, Prelude and

Fugue No.17 in A-flat Major, BWV 862

I. Prelude
II. Fugue

J.S. Bach was born in Germany, one of the most prominent

composers during Baroque Period. The Well-Tempered Clavier was
composed around 1722, included preludes and fugues in all 24 major and
minor keys, in which this Prelude and Fugue in A-flat Major is found.

For prelude, it is predominantly polyphonic and makes use of many

imitations and sequences throughout the piece. There also modulations to
E-flat and D-flat major in the piece. This prelude is made up of 3 voices (2
upper and 1 lower), and it is in triple time and the form would be themes
and variations. The prelude begins with the 2-bar theme; it is homophonic
texture and made up of triadic motifs first in the tonic key in the first bar,
then followed by an ascending sequence of the motif in the second bar.

The second section, fugue, also in A-flat Major, it predominantly

contrapuntal and uses many running semiquavers, sequences and
modulations. Fugue involves exposition, episode, development and coda,
with changing in ornamental lines modulations. This fugue begins with the
first subject in the tonic key, A-flat major by the middle lower voice. This
piece ends with a grand perfect cadence in A-flat major.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809):

Sonata No.59 in E-flat Major, Hob. XVI: 49

I. Allegro
II. Adagio e cantabile
III. Finale: Tempo di Minuet

Haydn was an Austrian composer of Classical Period. Sonata No.59

in E flat Major was one of Haydn’s most famous piano sonatas, which was
completed in 1790.

There are three movements in this sonata. First movement, Allegro,

begins with a broken chord, uses few short motifs. In the central
development section, to a brief cadenza before the final recapitulation.
This movement finishes with a scale.

Second movement, Adagio e Cantabile, in Ternary form. Melody is

simple but eloquent; a roaring middle section from left across right
marked the particular beauty of the movement. Creating a moving
atmosphere by using a large tessitura.

Third movement, Tempo di Minuet, in a brilliant Rondo form.

Melody based on the aversion of the principal theme in E flat minor.

uses much rubato to form a romantic feeling. As this piece is in Ternary
form, separated into Section A and B.

Section A begins with peculiar Brahmsian melodies. There are

various key changes in this section. Key changed from A major to E major,
then changed back to A major at the end.

For section B, it is in relative minor of F sharp, melody first appears

with two lines echoing each other. Key then changed to F sharp major, and

Peter Sculthorpe (1929-2014):

Night Pieces

I. Snow, Moon and Flowers

II. Night
III. Stars

Peter Sculthorpe was an Australian composer. During the age of

seven, he started composing music after his first piano lesson. Night Pieces
was composed in 1971 and was separated into three sections.

Firstly, the opening melody of the first section is based on a

Japanese concept, which was known as Setsugekka. Snow, Moon, and
Flower represented the exclusive natural beauty of Japan. As they seemed
to be quiet and gentle, therefore, should be played with care and peaceful.

The night is played softly by creating a placid atmosphere, with

playing different volume in different parts of this section. At the middle
part, it is played drastically, and returned to a peaceful atmosphere at the
end. This section is a transcription of Peter’s orchestral work, Sun Music.

The last section, Stars, is concerned with transformations of similar

harmonic and motivic structures. The shape of the shining stars was
performed through various unique phrases.
