Task 2: Espresso Coffee Knowledge


You will need to conduct research to answer a series of questions that relate to coffee bean
production, espresso bean processing, espresso coffee beverages common to Australia and
language associated with making espresso coffees.

You need to use reliable and accurate reference materials for your research. It should also be
very visual and include relevant pictures, diagrams and infographics to support your
information. You will be required to submit a reference list of the information resources and
images you have used as evidence of the research you have conducted.

Part 1 – Coffee bean production

1. Include an annotated map, of where coffee is grown


2. Who are the top producers of coffee in the world? Brazil.
3. Identify and explain the most expensive coffee beans in the world. Copi Luwak is the
world’s most expensive coffee. It is produced by taking the half-digested beans from
the feces of the Indonesian Palm Civet.
4. What are the most common beans produced and used to make espresso coffee? Caffea
Arabica and Coffea Conephora are the most common coffee beans used for making
espresso coffee.
5. Explain with the use of images, the process of coffee bean production, from being picked, to
being ready to ship to roasters around the world.
6. Explain the importance of blends in espresso coffee and why a roaster would produce
them. The purpose of blending coffee is to create distinct, unique and desired
flavours. Blends are made to appeal to a larger demographic.
7. Explain why coffee beans are ground; define fine, medium and coarse grind and the use
for each grind size.

Part 2 – Espresso coffee beverages

8. On the average Australian café menu, there are 10 common espresso beverages. Identify
all 10 then include the following information for each Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso, Flat
white, Long black, Short Macchiato, Long Macchiato, Mocha, Piccolo, Ristretto
a. The name.
b. A picture of what it looks like.
c. The measurements of espresso/milk/water/other that make up each drink.
9. Melbourne is known as having the best espresso coffee in the world. For this reason, café
owners often come up with new espresso menu items, for example the ‘magic’. Explain
what the magic coffee is and how it came about.

Part 3 – Espresso terminology

10. You need to be very familiar with the following espresso coffee terms and what they
mean. For each, provide a detailed explanation of what it means/how its done and the
equipment or parts of the espresso machine involved.
● Grind

● Dose

● Tamp

● Purge

● Extraction

● Crema

● Puck

● Texturing

● Season

Part 4 – Reference list

Using the program, https://www.citethisforme.com/ you need to correctly reference each


resource you use. It is suggested that you save the weblink you get information for your
research AND the date you looked at the website in a google doc, then at the completion of
your research, you run each weblink through ‘cite this for me’.

Follow these steps

1. Click on Harvard
2. Click on website or more for ebook/pdf, newspaper, magazine, online image.
3. Copy and paste the weblink and press search. When it comes up with the correct page,
click ‘cite’, then click ‘continue’.
4. It will take you a page that has boxes to fill in, one of which is “access date”. You need
to type in the date you took information from the website. Then click on ‘complete
citation’.
5. It will bring you to a page that says ‘your bibliography’. You will be able to save 10
references here before you have to start again. So, do 10, then copy and paste them all
into your final assessment before referencing more websites.
