Transportation - Assignment - 2

This document provides instructions and examples for calculating volume, dimensional weight, chargeable weight, and shipping charges for various packages. It explains how to calculate volume by multiplying length, width, and height. It describes how to calculate dimensional weight using different formulas depending on whether the shipment is by air or road. It notes that the chargeable weight is the greater of the actual or dimensional weight. Finally, it provides the formulas and currency conversions for determining shipping charges based on the chargeable weight and applicable rate.

Assignment 2

(1) To calculate the volume, we multiply the length, width, and height.

a) Air - Volume = 60 cm x 32 cm x 24 cm = 46,080 cm³ or, 46080/1000 = 46.08

b) Air - Volume = 47 in x 32 in x 17 in = 25,568 in³ or, 25568/1000 = 25.56
c) Road - Volume = 4.25 ft x 3.5 ft x 3 ft = 44.625 ft³ or, 44.6
d) Road - Volume = 40 in x 37 in x 23 in = 34,040 in³ or, 34040/1000 = 34.04

(2) To calculate the dimensional weight, we need to use the formula: length x width x height / dimensional factor,
where the dimensional factor is 166(used for lb) & 366(used for kg) for air shipments and 10 lbs. per cubic foot for
Road shipments.

a) Air - Dimensional weight = 60 cm x 32 cm x 24 cm / 6,000 = 7.68 kg

b) Air - Dimensional weight = 47 in x 32 in x 17 in / 366 = 69.85 kg
c) Road - Dimensional weight = 4.25 ft x 3.5 ft x 3 ft x 10 = 446.25 lbs
d) Road - Dimensional weight = (40 in x 37 in x 23 in) / 1728 x 10 = 196.99 lbs

(3) The chargeable weight is the greater value between the actual weight and the dimensional weight.

a) Chargeable weight = max (10 kg, 7.68 kg) = 10 kg

b) Chargeable weight = max (64 kg, 69.85 kg) = 69.77 kg
c) Chargeable weight = max (423 lbs, 446.25 lbs) = 446.25 lbs
d) Chargeable weight = max (210 lbs, 196.99 lbs) = 210 lbs

(4) To determine the charge, we need to multiply the chargeable weight by the rate and convert to the specified
currency.

a) Charge = 10 kg x $23 CAD/kg = $230 CAD

b) Charge = 69.85 kg x $18 CAD/kg = $1,257.3 CAD
c) Charge = 446.25 lbs x $64 USD/cwt / 100 = $285.6 USD
d) Charge = 210 lbs x $45 CAD/cwt / 100 = $94.5 CAD
(5) The FedEx website is another resource for dimensional weight. FedEx defines dimensional weight as a billing system
that considers the package volume rather than the actual weight. The dimensional weight is computed by multiplying the
package's length, breadth, and height in inches by a dimensional weight divisor. The dimensional weight divisor varies
per shipping carrier and is subject to change. The computation determines which of the actual weight and dimensional
weight is bigger, and the greater weight is utilised to compute the shipping cost. FedEx's domestic dimensional weight
divisor is 139, while its international dimensional weight divisor is 166.
