This document provides details for performing seismic analysis of a 4-storey reinforced concrete building located in seismic zone V. It includes calculations of seismic weights, determination of fundamental periods, distribution of base shear to each floor using static and dynamic analysis methods, and comparison of results from manual calculations and software analysis. The building is modeled and response spectrum analysis is conducted in SAP2000 to verify the manual calculation results.

Problem statement
Perform response spectrum analysis of multistorey RC building with the following
specification manually first and then the results are checked in relevant software.

1) No. of story- more than 3

2) Seismic zone- except II
3) SMRF
4) Wall thickness- 230 ex. and 150 Int
5) Parapet- 1.2 m height
6) Loads- assume all loads on residential building as per IS875. 7) Assume suitable
data if required Building details are as follows:

1. Number of storeys – Ground + 3

2. Grade of concrete – M25
3. Grade of steel – Fe 415
4. Floor to floor height – 3.3m
5. Parapet height – 1.20 m
6. Slab thickness – 150 mm 7. External wall – 230 mm thk.
8. Internal wall – 150 mm thk.
9. Column size – 230 x 450 mm & Beam size 230 x 450 mm
10. Live load on floor – 2 Kn/m2
11. Floor finish – 1KN/m2
12. Seismic zone – V
13. Building resting on medium soil
14. Importance factor – 1

*Calculation of Seismic Weights
Dead Load Calculation
1. Weight of slab
= 25 x 0.15 x 88
= 330 kN

2. Weight of Column
Wt of 1 column = 25x0.23x0.45x(3.3-0.45)
= 7.37 kN
No. of column 15
Weight of columns = 15x7.37
= 110.55 kN

3. Weight of Beams
Length of beam = 65m

Weight of Beams = 25x65x0.23x0.45 = 168.18 kN

4. Weight of Parapet walls
= 20 x1.2 x 0.15 x ((8x2) + (11x2))
= 214 kN

5. Weight of exterior walls Length of exterior wall = 38m

Weight = 20 x 38x 0.23 x 2.85

= 498.18 kN

6. Weight of internal walls Length of interior wall = 27m

Weight = 20 x 27 x 0.15 x 2.85

=230.85 kN

Total Dead Load = 330+110.55+168.18+214+498.18+230.85

= 1551.76 kN

Live Load ( Imposed load)

Acc. to IS 1893 (1) – 2002,
Imposed load on roof need not be considered. ( Cl. 7.3.2)

1. LL on roof = 0
2. LL on each floor
LL < 3 kN/m2 …. (25% of the LL to be considered)
LL = 2 x 0.25= 0.50 kN/m2
LL on each floor = 0.50 x 88
= 44 kN
Floor Finish = 1 x 88
= 88 kN

For Typical floor

= 1551.76 + 44 + 88
= 1683.76 kN

W1 = W2 = W3 = 1683.76 kN
Roof Weight
DL of Parapit = 214 kN
DL of Slab = 230 kN
Weight Beam = 168.15 kN

Weight of Exterior wall = 498.18/ 2 = 249.09 kN

Total Roof Weight = 1031.93 kN

Total seismic weight = (1031.93+ 1683.76x 3)

Since all modes are well separated, contribution of all modes is obtained by
SRSS

V4= [(65.93)2+(-53.08)2]1/2 =84.64 V3= [(153.012)2+(-66.37)2]1/2 =166.88

The externally applied design loads are then obtained as:

Q4 = V4 = 84.64, Q3 = V3 -V4 = 82.24, Q2 = V2 -V3 = 48.49, Q1 = V1 -V2 = 31

Vb(Static)/Vb(Dynamic) = 512.784/246.37 = 2.08

Seismic force obtained by dynamic analysis should be scaled up as follows:

Q4 = 84.64 X 2.08 =176.05 Q3 = 82.24 X 2.08 = 171.05
Q2 = 48.49 X 2.08 = 100.85 Q1 = 31.00 X 2.08 = 64.48

Outcomes:
 The following project helped us to get acquainted with the essential understanding of
seismic analysis of multi-storeyed structure in SAP2000, the specifics of which are:

Basics about SAP2000 and its interface.

Modelling of G+3 building.
Assignment of load.
Defining load cases (including seismic load case).
Analysing the structure for various load cases.
Obtaining filtered outputs.
As a part of requirement of this project we also brushed up on the seismic analysis of
multistoreyed structure including determinations of base shear, story shear, Modal
participation and Modal Mass participation.
At the end of the project, we can conclude that software has an edge over the manual
calculation as it

considers each and every factor that contributes towards attaining solution to a problem
which might be neglected in case of manual calculation.
On the contrast it is also essential to appreciate the fact that it is very much important to
always the reliability of software when used for structural analysis since there are always
instances that a software may not be able to take into consideration certain aspects that need
industrial exposure and experience.
