Answer scheme Marks

1. Calculate the value of average voltage and the frequency for the circuit given by
the equation V(t) = 100 sin (280t + 40°) V. Find also the value of instantaneous
voltage when t= 2ms.

Vp = 100
Vavg = 0.637 x Vp = 0.637 x 100 = 63.7V 1

280 = ω
2πf = 280 so f = 280/2π = 44.56 Hz 1

Value of V when t=2ms

radians = degrees × π / 180° = 40 x (π / 180°) = 0.698 rad

V(2ms) = 100 sin (280(2ms) + 40°) 1

= 100 sin 0.56 + 0.698 1
= 95.15 V 1

2. R = 50Ω L = 20mH C = 5µF V=50V f= 100Hz

Z1 = R < 0° = 50 < 0°Ω 1

Z2 = XL < 90° Ω = 2πfL < 90° = 12.57 < 90°Ω 1
Z3 = XC < -90° = 1/(2πfC) < -90° = 318.31 <-90°Ω 1

a) Total impedance = 1/ZT = 1/Z1+1/Z2 + 1+Z3 1

ZT = (1/Z1+1/Z2 + 1+Z3)-1 1
ZT = 12.66 < 75.33°Ω 1

b) Total Current = I = (V/ZT) = (50 < 0°) / (12.66 < 75.33°) 2

= 3.95 < -75.33° A

3. An RLC series circuit has a resonance frequency of 2kHz and a Q-factor at

resonance of 40. If the impedance of the circuit at resonance is 30Ω, calculate the
value of ;
a) The inductance

Q = XL/R so XL = Q x R
= 40 x 30 2
= 120Ω
So L = 120/2π(2k) = 9.55mH 1

b) The capacitance

XL = XC = 120
2
C = 1/(2πx2kx120) = 663.15nF

c) The bandwidth
2
BW = fr / Q = 2k / 40 = 50Hz

4. Based on figure 2 below, calculated the

a) load current and

Load current = Is , N1 =300, N2 = 4000 , Load = 2.2kΩ , Vp = 50V

From formula, Vs = (Vp x N2) / N1 = (50 x 4000) / 300 = 666.67V 2

So Is = Vs / load = 666.67 / 2.2kΩ

= 0.30A 1

b) load voltage of the transformer.

1
Vs = 666.67V

5. Refer to Figure 3 below. Given Vline:415 V, 50H2. Calculate ;

a) Total impedance

Z = R- jXC = 200-j300 = 360.56 < -56.31Ω 1

b) Phase current

*star connection = IP = IL 0.5

VL = √3 x Vp so Vp = VL/√3
= 415/√3
= 239.60V 2

So Ip = Vp / Z = 239.60/ 360.56
= 0.66A 1

c) Line Current = phase current = 0.66A 0.5
