DEVELOPMENT OF MORAL

CHARACTER
Golloso, Barbie Nicole V.
WHAT IS MORAL The word ‘moral’ is derived
from the Latin word mores,
CHARACTER? which means ‘convention’, or
‘practice’.
Moral character refers
to the existence of In contemporary usage
virtues such as character often refers to a set
of qualities or characteristics
integrity, courage,
that can be used to
fortitude, honesty,
differentiate between people.
and loyalty.
Berkowitz (2002) said that moral character is “an
individual’s set of psychological characteristics that
affect that person’s ability and inclination to
function morally”.

Moral character development has been a topic of

concern for thousands of years. It was central to
the development of American schooling but lost
favor in the middle of the 20th century. Over the
last several decades there has been increased
attention paid to the importance of moral
character as central to the purpose of schooling.
Human beings are complex beings. Unlike other
organisms that are simply driven by survival
instinct, human beings experience the world in a
variety of ways through a variety of perceptive
capacities.

According to Aristotle, virtues are tendencies to

act, feel, and judge, tendencies that are
developed from natural capacity through proper
training and exercise (Yarza, 1994).
The Circular Relation of Acts and Character;

A. Repetition of Action and its Effect on the

Person
- Actions can be repetitive or automatic in
different ways. When an action is constantly
repeated, over time it can become a habit.
Actions become skills through repetition and
experience.
B. The Type of Action
- Human beings are body/soul unities, actions of
the body are actions of the self. Human acts are
rational acts and are more closely associated with
the character that are acts of human beings
because the former actions come from the whole
person.
C. Intention and Responsibility
- Two important aspects of the revelatory nature
of action are responsibility and intention.
Responsibility and intention are rooted in the will,
which is the source of the self-possession and self-
governance of human beings.
SEVEN STEPS OF MORAL REASONING;
1. Stop and think - Before making any decisions, it
is best to take a moment to think about the
situation itself, your place in it, and other
surrounding factors which merit consideration, such
as the people involved and the potential effects of
your decisions on them.

2. Clarify goals - It is also necessary to clarify your

short-term and long-term aims.
3. Determine facts - Make sure you gather enough
information before you make a choice.

4. Develop options - Once you are clear in terms of

your goals and facts, try to come up with alternative
options to exhaust all possible courses of action.

5. Consider consequences - Filter your choices and

separate the ethical from the unethical choices
bearing in mind both your motives and the
potential consequences of your action.
6. Choose - Make a decision. If the choice is hard to
make, try consulting others who may have
knowledge or experience of your situation.

7. Monitor and modify - Monitor what happens

after your decision and have enough humility to
modify your action or behavior as necessary.
Narvaez (1995) suggests that the skills of moral and
character development should be considered in
terms of four psychological components.

ETHICAL SENSITIVITY

ETHICAL JUDGEMENT

ETHICAL MOTIVATION

ETHICAL ACTION
FACTORS AFFECTING MORAL CHARACTER
DEVELOPMENT;

Family
The family plays a crucial role in the formation of
someone's moral character. Biological or not, the
family that one considers having has an immense
impact. There are several factors affecting the
values a parent could teach a child. These factors
are socioeconomic status, culture, age, gender,
religion, and education.
PEER
As we become exposed to more people, we are
pressured into trying to belong or be accepted.
Peers, friends, classmates, and colleagues are also
influencers in our moral character. The time
spent with peers will expose them to other
perspectives and practices.
SCHOOL
Most of a person's life before adulthood is
commonly spent in school. The school and its
teachers could enhance the students ‘moral
character if they know how and if they are
intentional about it.
COMMUNITY
To be part of a community means to also share
their beliefs and/or practice their traditions or
culture. Moral development stems from the
beliefs and values that are learned in each
culture through interaction and experiences
within the community.
