MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-65

An MSS Standard Practice is intendedas a basis for common practice by the manufacturer, the
user, and the general public. The existence of an MSS Standard Practice does not in itself
preclude the manufacture, sale, or use of products not conforming to the Standard Practice.
Mandatory conformance isestablished only byreference in a code, specification, sales contract,
or public law, as applicable.

Where other standards are referenced herein, it is intended that the latest issue applies. In
the one case where a date is shown, the reference is for information only. If referenced
a standard
in effect at the timeof approval of this standard is subsequently replacedby a later issue, confor-
mance with either issue will satisfy the requirements of this standard practice.

Since the revisions herein do not alter the substantive requirements for conformance, a
flange in conformance with either edition will also be in conformance with the other.

Substantive changesin this 1999 edition are“flagged”by

parallel bars as shown on the margins of this paragraph.
The specific detail of the change may be determined by
comparing the materialflagged with that in the previous
edition.

Non-toleranceddimensions in thisStandardPractice are nominal, and, unless otherwise

specified, shall be considered “for reference only”.

ANNEX A
MSS SP-65 PRESSURE TEMPERATURE RATING DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

The Class 4OOO pressure temperature ratings, presented in Table 2, were developed during theperiod that ASME
The pressure ratingsof all Group # 1 and Group#2, B 16.5-81 materials, except the
B 1625-8 1 edition was current.
low carbon grades of stainless steel Material Group 2.3, were considered at each temperature up to 850F. The
combined lowest pressure temperature rating of all Group # 1 and Group #2 materials were considered in the
Class 4000 pressure temperature rating. The Class 4000 pressure temperature ratingswere simplified and
standardized at each temperature to up850F so that all Group # and Group#2 B16.5-81 materials couldsupport
the design features of SP-65.

During the1998 reviewof SP-65, the Technical Committee reviewed the pressure temperature ratingsof this S P
against those published for all materials, except the low carbon grade of stainless steel Material Group 2.3, in
ASME B16.5-96. The review indicated that the combined lowest pressure temperature rating of Group # 1 and
Group #2 materials, versus the B16.5-81 pressure temperature ratings(see Table Al below) had not substantially
changed, and that theB16.5-96 allowed even higher pressure ratings at a number of temperatures up to 850F.
With this background, thepressure temperature ratings table as originally developed under ASME B 16.5- 198 1,
has been retained (Table 2), and its reference to ASME B16.5-1996 pressure temperature ratings has been
justified.

have been used and would have given similar comparative ratings.
